Speaking as a very old Minecraft fan, I've been horribly disappoint of Minecraft in the last year or so. But, with the upcoming Adventure Update, it seems like Notch has finally laid off the cheap Vodka and decided to put all the promised-yet-undelivered features we were waiting for since /indev/ (and even earlier) into the game.
The small hint about a leveling system or whatever reminded me of this ancient poll (which for some reason got its results changed. If I remember correctly, originally 60% were against leveling and only 40% were in favor of MMORPG features).
Anyway, my point is, the Adventure Update is what will finally bring hope back to Minecraft fans, and to me. Thanks Notch, for listening to your audience for the first time in months. I hope you'll fix the damn pig-riding mechanic at last.
I'm personally not looking forwards to NPC villages. For me, Minecraft is me, alone, trying to make the best of my world not some brain-dead NPC continually stealing my trees.

I don't think its going to be other humans i think its going to be more like tribal villages of pig-men or something like that, at-least that's my general impression so far from listening to the tweets every day.

If I wanted to play with idiots, I'd play SMP.
Sorry, I didn't read Notch nor Jeb describing how NPCs would be using resources anywhere.
Assumptions... just because there is an NPC village mod out there doesn't mean the Mojang addition of said concept will work the same.
Do you really think that Notch is so stupid as to implement leveling the way you're suggesting? Trust me, you're not going to have to gain levels in order to mine things; leveling will, at most, be an addendum to the standard combat. Seriously, he's adding experience orbs... that you get for killing monsters. That's hardly a detriment; if anything, it'll add more incentive to go monster hunting.
Now as for you folks who are bemoaning NPC villages, fear not: Notch has never, ever suggested human NPCs. What he has suggested is either goblin or pigman villages, which, even if they aren't an optional feature, will hardly inconvenience you. Really, we already have sentient pigmen in the nether (albeit zombified), so adding regular pigmen to the overworld would merely be an extension of that.
Minecraft just isn't a game which should include leveling and experience, it's so much against the sandbox concept... Maybe I could bear it if it wasn't too overpowered, maybe even so that you don't need leveling for anything in particular (like "THOU MUST HAVE MINING LEVEL OF F****NG 372 TO MINE DIAMONDS, NOOOOB!"), maybe it would add a small boost to like mining or speed or strength ( I'm talking like lvl 2. Mining + 2% speed, lvl 3. Stamina + 3% life and oxygen when underwater and so on).
To be honest, I can't see Notch restricting things like mining to levels. If anything, it'll be enhancements to the standard gameplay, like you said -- and that's assuming that there are even levels for anything besides combat.
If you look at some of the work that Notch did with Wurm online you might see where a bit of this may be going, although I hope without the grind of Wurm.
I am for any additional content, but can see where some folks would like to have the option to turn this sort of thing off.
as long as levels dont restrict anything and NPC dont ruin my house im all for it. and i want villages so i can be an evil basterd and destroy them all and loot the remains!
No NOTCH NOOOOOOOOOO! I play Minecraft to be alone with the nature, to enjoy the landscape and to build stuff. Remember what Millenaires do with logs, even in a building?
Notch, this is stupid. It ruins the aspect most of the people play Minecraft for. If I want brainless people, I go to Reddit Chaos ^^
... hey modders, time to find the class files for NPC villages, and delete them ...
I ****ing hate newbies.
The bare thought of NPC towns used to shake the community in delight during Minecraft's glory days.
What the **** happened now?

New players began to mistake Minecraft's current state as the final, be-all end-all vision for the game, conveniently ignoring the massive changes that Notch had promised, and continues to promise.
Personally, I've been eagerly awaiting goblin/pigman villages since Notch announced that he was planning them. But apparently everyone forgot those announcements.
Christ, the whiners are unbearable.

That would explain the unused pigman skin in the .jar
what would solve a LOT of problems if he made it optional for every world you start since so many people hate them
It's probably the opposite, actually. The people who are okay with the idea just don't voice their opinions as much as people who disagree. Most people will blindly hate any form of change, not knowing what the developers truly have in mind. It's just how people work..
As for the option, I actually agree with that. I'm still excited for both leveling and NPCs, though.
Villages will be fine for me. All I don't like is leveling. It had better not be classic MMORPG leveling. That would be awful. But I'd be fine with it if it was unique, and non-limiting.
ITS NOT A SEPARATE MODE!! ITS AN UPDATE!! THIS MEANS SURVIVAL WILL BE TAINTED WITH STUPID NPC'S FROLICKING ABOUT AND THE TYPICAL MMO GAYNESS AND LEVELING! I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO MINE 31849124 DIRT BLOCKS IN ORDER TO GAIN THE ABLITY TO SWING A BETTER PICKAXE!!! HEY GUESS WHAT? FROM YOUR INCESSANT SWINGING OF A PICKAXE, YOU CAN NOW USE A BETTER PICKAXE THAT WORKS EXACTLY THE SAME EXCEPT THAT YOUR STUPID LITTLE BRAIN WASN'T ABLE TO USE ITS ALMIGHTY POWER BEFORE FOR SOME ****ING REASON.

Oh crap, notch just announced that there WILL be more game "Modes" in 1.8... But he hasn't yet explained how that affects things like npc villages etc. So now we are in the air again.

You know what's wrong with most of the new players? They've got no perspective on what the game was SUPPOSED to be a long time ago, and can't even look for the information in the blog. Press the back button in there a few times and you'll see how different the game was supposed to be. NPC villages were promised since before the Halloween update. This game is not nearly what it was meant to be, and as such it's still in development. There are changes coming, the adventure update will not be a mode, but a change right down to the core of the game.
Experience orbs will not be that stupid leveling system we've seen everywhere else so often before. If anything it'll probably be linked to the combat and some of the moves you can do. Who knows? Notch'll probably revolutionize the idea completely. I highly doubt it'll be the boring runescape leveling boring mechanics and boring grinding.
The NPC villages are probably not going to be like millenaire's villages, and the inhabitants will most likely be pig-men, since they've been sitting around for a long time (and it only makes sense with zombie pigmen around). Besides, they'll probably oink something like "Be a good piglet, or you'll end up in the nether!" as a threat to their kids. Again, who knows what to expect until we get it?
