I'm new to the game/forum, so I have a few subjective questions. I've been playing a lot this past weekend (I bought the game Friday) and have done some messing around. I've got a nice house and I've found my fair share of iron and coal, etc, and I was thinking about editing the settings of the game a bit so I can spend more time focused on mining rather than worrying about if some creeper is about to blow up behind me, or maybe finding a less stressful mining technique. So, I've come to ask:
1. Is it "wrong" or "cheating" to switch the game to peaceful mode so that you can mine without worrying about mobs? (I know some other gamers on other games will estrange you if you play on easier levels, but this seems like a nicer community as far as I can tell)
2. Do you think digging a 20x20 hole in the ground straight down is a legitimate mining technique? What about branch mining? Which do you prefer?
I understand that it's my game and I call the shots, but I want to have the most fun possible. I'm just curious if you guys think these are "legitimate" techniques and if it makes the game more fun or if it gets old after a while, etc. Also, whatever advice you have for a rookie would be awesome. I already know the first rule of mining (NEVER dig directly above or below you), and I've got the wiki for any crafting help I need.
I made a 16x16 hole down to bedrock, but that's mostly just to get a lot of cobblestone. You should dig down to level 12 and do branch mining there. search for the best way to branch mine if you want :biggrin.gif: Level 12 has the most diamonds btw
Well about the peaceful mode, it really doesn't matter. I don't care if someone uses it but some other people do. The best way to mine is digging a staircase to lv12 and making a branch mine. (skip 2 blocks and make a tunnel, skip another 2 blocks and make another tunnel)

Thanks for whatever help you can give!
#1 is entirely an opinion question, although I occasionally do that.
#2 I think it is. In my opinion, if you're digging up block to find ores, regardless of how, your mining, and all forms of mining are legitimate. My favorite, however, is branch mining, since it has very high efficiency.

I'd like to point out, as well, that branch mining, in MineCraft terms, is synonymous with strip mining.
However, the 20x20 hole you describe is real-life strip mining, to an extent.
You could always dig a 1x1 hole and put ladders all the way down... I often find that's the fastest method to access a mine.

#1. the game will get old if you never fight mobs, but it can be quite annoying to lose diamonds to a creeper.
#2. I dig a straight line for as far as I can go occasionally popping up to create a new fort. Or if branch is boring you can go spelunking, where you dig to find caves to explore for resources.
im sure no-one minds you playing on peaceful, as to mining straight down like that, bad idea, your better off finding a large cave system and exploring in, you'll fins more stuff faster and you'll have more fun doing it, also, if you stop at i think layer 12 and fust dig around it's pretty easy to fins diamond.
I tend to dig 3x3 shafts downward. It's like a spiral staircase if I don't have enough ladders; if I do, then I stand on the middle block, digging all around me to make sure there aren't any lava blocks on the other side. Block up any lava and destroy that middle block before continuing downward. All the while I'm placing ladders in one of the corners and placing torches to light the way. Then when F3 shows 12.6, it's time to make a larger room and start branch mining from there. Of course, if I find my way into natural cave systems beforehand, those get explored and incorporated.
As for playing on peaceful, I like building and exploring, so I'm almost always on peaceful. How can it be wrong or cheating if it's an option? You can always switch back when you've had your fill of mining and want to challenge yourself on how well you can protect your creations.
Here's a tip for you: remember to backup your saves, especially when you get to the point when you install mods. Also backup your .minecraft folder before an update, just in case.
Happy mining!

With your mining technique you should build steps down from your house to bedrock the find layer 13 and dig straight along layer 13 to find diamonds and some nice caverns
