Quick question, PrototypeWalrus...What texture pack is that? I may go and download it. I'm kind of a texture pack collector. I have about five or six of my favorite packs cluttering up my texture pack file, hahaha. I'd like to add that one to my collection. Thanks in advance.
when i go mining i arrange it like this: torches then pickaxe then shovel i always keep an extra pick too
when am building i just put the blocks that i need to use
Glass represents whatever resource I'm using at the time at the time.
I like to have an empty hand for use around my wolves and my sword on '4' for easy access. And the torches never leave the 9th slot. I actually lied before, I do arrange one thing in my inventory the same way every time. My torches, which I put directly above the 9th slot in my hotbar for easy replacement.
The flint and steel is used to burn off unwanted stacks of items.

In my actual inventory, not just the hotbar, I keep a few useful, but not constantly used items(like arrows, extra tools and food) to the far right, keeping the rest open for acquisitions.
Spares tend to go vertically above their hotbar slot, and yes, that means I carry four picks, four shovels, and four axes with me almost all the time. Some of the inventory spaces above the Ladders and Torches are reserved for "rarely used, but useful enough to carry a few" items - doors and trapdoors, for example, or maybe a bucket or two of water.
The (Sword)/(Bow) is optional; if I'm playing on Peaceful, I typically skip carrying either. I only bother with a spare sword (just one) if my current is below half durability, or I'm still using a wooden sword. If I have a bow, the spaces above it are filled with arrows, if I have that many (which isn't often, if I'm not InvEditing my way to cheaty-super-ness, heh).
Above the tools are the backups (or arrows above the bow), and I drop whatever blocks I need into the context spots. Above the watch are all the secondary tools that have limited use. Compass, Flint and Steel, Bucket. In the top left corner, I have logs, then planks, then sticks.
When mining:
1:pick axe
2:sword
3:water bucket
4:Food
5:Dirt(filling in holes while branch mining)
6-8: Whatever I'm mining
9:Torches
Torches have to be last, so much easier to roll the mouse wheel back to get to them quickly.
I keep a pretty organized inventory even though I have auto replace at my disposal, keeps my OCD pleased.
I keep bow in slot 1, arrows above it. Slots 2,3,4, and 5 have a swords, picks, shovels, and axes with 2 backups of each above them. Torches in a random spot on the hotbar, and misc. in the other 3
(columns include the bottom bar thing)

column 9: torches at bottom, valuables and ores above that

Sword - Pickaxe - Shovel - Torches - Water Bucket - [anything] - [anything] - Compass - Clock
I alternate between the shovel and the axe though, I rarely need both at the same time.

Switch the cobblestone for what I currently need while I build. I leave the dirt. it's often useful to climb.
