If there was a board specifically for talking/hating/praising Notch, it'd be more popular than the Discussion Board.
Seriously, this thread again?
Why is it always in this board?
Why can't it just stay dead?
I'm sorry. I just noticed a ton of hate about notch on the forums latley. And I was curious as to why. So I made this. Had no clue it was already up about 500 times lol.
I like Notch, but there are 2 things I wish would happen with him.
1. Him getting into gear and making some new additions. (he did do a really great job on the 1.6.x updates though!!)
2. Listening more to the community...like our suggestions? (I know he is adding some, and has taken other into consideration, but there are some cool ideas out there that need to be paid attention to.)

GREAT POINT! That would be awesome! I can't wait for Beta 1.7 Dungeons to come out :smile.gif:.
Edit: actually more things. I thought that paying for beta included all future updates? But now he might end up making expansion packs. I DON'T WANT EXPANSION RUBBISH, I WANT A FREE UPDATE LIKE YOU PROMISED ME.
Actually, no, that was Alpha buyers that are getting all future updates. The only promise he made to Beta buyers is that you'll get the final release.
I dislike the fact that he got so much money out of minecraft yet he does not invest it in more talented developers dedicated to it. With some added talented developers he really could add some fresh content more regularly. Why does he insist on doing the code himself?
I do not particularly respect him as a coder.
I do, however, completely respect him as a game designer.
LOL - So Much money? - break down how much it would cost yourself for just a year to....
RENT a Headquarters and all other overhead costs
Have a decent pay for yourself and 8 staff for a year - + overtime pay + super
Include Money for equipment, advertising, marketing and travel costs associated with the business.
Keep Mr TAXMAN happy!!

Money from Minecraft(lets just say every copy has been $15, and 2,500,000 people have bought it, ok?): 37.5 million
Assuming his employees work at 40 bucks an hour, 40 hour weeks, 52 weeks a year.
Money for wages(including Notch) for one year: $800000(its actually $691200, I'm adding a lot in bonuses/overtime)
Building rent, lets go with $1000 a month: $12000
Equipment: $200,000
Advertising/Marketing: $0(they have done zero advertising, Minecraft was spread through YouTube videos.)
Travel costs: $200,000, this is a big estimate, but i think its high, seeing as to how Arizona to Alaska and back again is was $800 a couple years ago.
Taxman: assuming 50% tax(yes, 50%) $18.75 million
Money left over after expenses: $17,538,000
Even if my estimates are extremely low, he still has PLENTY of money for more employees.
Probably he just wants to create the game by himself since he started it by himself, maybe he thinks coding it (almost) entirely by himself is more fun than just doing the game and paying others to realize his vision. Maybe he's wrong, maybe he's right, but that's the way he works. Money doesn't play any role in that as far as we can tell.

Why would I hate him? I am playing a game created by him which I enjoyed more than all of the other games together. And the updates? Well, I see them as a nice extra.
I hate how he turns his attention to creating a mobile port for Minecraft when there's still so many problems with the original. He's definitely jumping the gun a bit, and sometimes comes off as a bit pompous when he does what he wants instead of what the players want.
Programming is quite easy, actually. Anyone with a degree in computer science or software engineering should have the knowledge to put together a project of equal complexity to Minecraft. Just because you don't know how to code or aren't very good at it doesn't mean it's hard. I honestly don't know why everyone thinks it is.
Anyways, I dislike Notch's lack of rigor. It seems he doesn't see things through. He doesn't bother fixing all of his bugs before moving on to new content. He doesn't bother testing the new content, thus leaving many bugs around for him to fix. Instead of a giant "bug fix update", things would go a lot more smoothly if he ironed things out before he released these patches or, at the very least, before he moved on to something else.
Minecraft itself almost seems like one big kludge. I mean, look at what he's saying about the modding API. He's just going to release the entire source code. Why? What's so hard about making some abstract base classes for us to extend? What's so hard about providing us some proper hooks? It's a baffling move.
I also question how the client state is brought up to date in SMP, specifically when chunks are being loaded. Look at your network usage when you log on to a server. You're receiving multiple megabytes of data, but it doesn't have to be that way. I have outlined in this thread a way to decrease network usage when loading chunks from a remote server. The methods detailed within should have minimal impact beyond reducing the amount of data sent and received.
Further, I question Notch's use, or lack thereof, of memory management in the program. Go into the game, stand completely still, and hit F3. Look at your memory usage. It rises at about 2-3MB each second! The garbage collector kicks in every minute or so, clearing some 200MB of junk, but this demonstrates that Notch isn't properly releasing these resources when he stops using them. Running the garbage collector is not a lightweight process by any means, and it will run more and more frequently as the allotted memory fills up.
The factor that makes it fill up is that map data loaded into RAM doesn't get released for as long as you're on that map. No matter how far away from a chunk you may be, if it was at one point loaded into memory, it'll stay there. This does cut down on hard drive usage, but it increases memory usage considerably. There are reasonable limits to these sorts of things. Load all blocks within such and such a distance. If a block becomes such and such a distance away, commit it to the hard drive and release it.
Why require the garbage collector to run at all when you can merely practice memory management? Really, any weighty resource needs to be managed properly, be it a texture, a connection, or some other object you defined yourself (like a chunk). Why isn't this done?
And LOTS of you don't think he even works on the game.
But! I know a lot of you completely disagree with this opinion.
I honestly think that Notch is doing a FINE Job at Developing Minecraft and has improved it greatly! Yes, the game has a alot of bugs and yes, OF COURSE Notch is fixing them. But I don't think you guys realize how hard it is to manage and improve a Game like this. Programming and coding IS NOT easy. So I would appreciate it if everyone would just be patient!
Your playing the game right? And if your playing it, then that probably means you like it. So why would you hate on Notch if the game is fun?
I have no opinion of him, I just wish he was as passionate about Minecraft as some of the Modders are. MC started as a tech demo hobby project, and to be honest he still treats it like that. His development practices are very scatter shot and random. The deal offered Alpha buyers isn't that big of a thing because frankly - I don't think he will ever release much additional content given how slow and randomly he works on it.
You guys are kidding yourself if you think you know everything that's going on behind the scenes right now. Seriously, nobody knew anything about the Winter Port (remember kids, thats NEXT WINTER..we still have a summer and a autumn to get through) until it was announced at E3...and that was probably because of a non-disclosure agreement.
As for hating him? Are you serious? Who the hell do you think you are? Are you so much better than this guy who designed a game you enjoy playing that you are going to suddenly think EVERY idea you come up with is so awesome that he should put it in his game? Why should he listen to you? Are you Peter Molyneux or Will Wright? What, you think you're ALWAYS right? You think you're entitled simply because you dropped $20 on an unfinished game? To me, $20 is the privilege of being able to play a game early and see it grow....I didn't pay $20 because I suddenly thought that made me a game designing god that Notch would listen to and bow down to my every demand.
Its nice that he does take some design suggestions into consideration, but when you have hundreds of thousands of suggestions, something you threw at the wall will stick once in awhile. It doesn't mean hes taking every suggestion, he just picks out that one that comes up that's actually a good idea.
It's just amazing how much Minecraft's fans can turn on the author of the game when they don't get what they want or Notch's vision doesn't match up with their own in some way. Suddenly the years of enjoyment you've received from a $10-$20 purchase (two people cant even go to a movie anymore for $20) is totally forgotten. Remember, if it wasnt for Notch...we wouldn't be here at all.

"Discuss what you hate most about notch?" sums up the OPs bias nicely.

People will like him and vote any of the 3, especially those that try to rile others up and stir the pot.
As for the money, he has stated something along the lines of having more money than he knows what to do with.
