I just saw one of these pictures on TV and immediately thought of Minecraft for some reason.
These are man-made islands in the middle of the flood-plains of the currently flooding Mississippi river where people managed to "dirt-bag" around the edge of their properties in time to stay dry. In the fine tradition of Minecrafters everywhere who have found ways to survive adverse environments and keep houses wherever they want despite adversity, I salute these people!

The good outcome is that Ms river is loaded with rich silt that will eventually yield good crops and should raise the land.
Companies pump this water into silt pits which leaves the silt and sand behind. Later they drain off the water, dig out the collection and sell the dirt to home owners and farmers.
