If viewing the ads is a requirement to download, then, "viewing the ads" is the payment being asked for.
Taking something without rendering the asked-for payment, is theft.
You are calling us thieves, when you are getting money illegally from a product you don't own? Don't make me laugh. You must be desperated to get some money!
Sweetheart ... make fewer wild, unfounded assumptions. You look less like a fool, that way.
I do not make mods, not for minecraft, nor for any other software. I do not have anything to sell, by any means, to any person, for any reason.

I don't think there is any asked for payment unless there is a TOS on it stating that you need to use the Adfly link to download it, but I may be wrong. Either way, I still click the Adfly links. Because it lets me through with the five second wait, I assume/hope that it's put together poorly enough to still give some money to the people I'd like to support. If so, then I'm only stealing from an ad company whose ads wouldn't persuade me anyway. If not, then oh well. I guess I will have stolen a tiny amount of money worth of mods for the sake of keeping my computer workable by not disabling my ad blocker.
If any senator wishes to read this, I suggest a SUSA bill. Stop United States Act. If the internet needs to babysit your lawmaking, Then there's something wrong.
The gall of some people in this thread. If someone wants to make some money off ads for their project, then let them. No one is forcing you to download it. Don't want ads? Don't download it, or make the program yourself. But don't whine to people who make something for you, regardless of what it has in it. Honestly...
Putting ads on your site isn't making money off your mod. Putting ads on your site is turning your customers into a product that you sell to advertisers via site traffic.
Do you really want to support a developer who will sell you like a slave?
Ads pay for the content you are taking. Taking said content while blocking the ads violates the social contract that is implicit in ad-supported content. You are depriving sites of revenue while greedily sucking down the goods they provide. That makes you an unethical asshole. If you're okay with being an anti-social little *****, fine, but don't try to pretend you aren't taking without upholding your end of the deal. And don't play dumb and try to argue away any ethical responsibility on your part, as if the standard doesn't apply to little old you.
What contract are you talking about!? But you are just modifying something that is already done by someone else! You shouldn't even take any profits from it, since it doesn't even belong to you!
You should thank Mohjang because he allowed you to decompile the code of HIS program and allow you to make profit with ads of the content they developed, because it should be a violation of the copyright and the terms of service. So, thank him for allowing you to do that instead of insult us!
Also, get a job!
Methinks you're just poor and trying to cover it up.
Methinks you're just poor and trying to cover it up.
Yeah, I am so poor I even have an internet connection, and a computer powerfull enough to run Minecraft.
I have a 3Gb/s DSL connection from Verizon. My share of the monthly bill is $20 ... affordable, readily, for anyone not reliant on soup kitchens.
Meanwhile, I am typing this post on a very nice, powerful system (AMD Phenom II X4, 3.2GHx quad-core; 8GB of DDR3-1333 memory; an NVidia GTX 275 video card, with 896MB of GDDR5 VRAM; and a Samsung flatscreen LED-lit LCD monitor, in 1920x1080 widescreen). All told, it was a $1,500 machine, monitor included, when I bought it (two years ago, so it's almost certianly much cheaper now).
Know how I afforded it? I saved up. I also have a very generous friend, who made me a loan - which I paid by STILL saving, and handing him what I saved.
And guess what? I live on permanent disability, getting about $8,500/year. Whereas the Federal Poverty Limit is something like $12K/year or so.
Figure it out.
Greed is corrupting you, guys.
An unwarranted sense of self-entitlement has blinded you.
IF they live in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, or Australia they would make $2.23 or $1.30 if 1000 people click their link in 24 hours. If they live elsewhere they make less. If they get less than 1000 link views they get less. How many mods do you really think get 1000 downloads in 24 hours? That sure is a lot of money they're sucking from us...oh wait...Adf.ly is paying for it. I wish I could live off of $2 and an Ice-cream cone like you can Magnus.
To back you guys up,
I'm the creator of a pretty popular mod, You Are the Creeper - it has almost 50 pages of discussion, nearing 30,000 total downloads (though the majority are from before adfly).
This is my April adfly payment:
I was just on my way out to buy caviar, actually /sarcasm

Yes, if your mod is popular, you can end up making a lot of money, especially if you update it for each new version of minecraft and everyone who got it at say 1.4 gets it again for 1.5 and 1.5_01 Great way to make money and I never really thought about it like that before.
Honestly, people have the right to put ads in their downloads. Just like we have the right to only view the elements of a page that we choose to. Hence Adblock and Noscript.
If any senator wishes to read this, I suggest a SUSA bill. Stop United States Act. If the internet needs to babysit your lawmaking, Then there's something wrong.
A hobby is something that you do for yourself, because it's fun for you. Such as playing games, or collecting butterflies. However, when you start giving out your work, it's no longer a hobby - it's a service. Whether that service is free, or gathers money from ads, or charges money, it's still a service.
If you choose to spend your time giving a service out for free, bully for you.
If you choose to sell your service, that's your right.
I don't think people should complain because people are asking you to spend 5 seconds of your time, where you don't have to do anything, except wait, to download something that they're giving you, otherwise, for free.
The one major rule
Do not distribute anything I've made. This includes the client and the server software for the game. This also includes modified versions of anything I've made.
In order to maintain control of the project, I need all game downloads to come from a single central source. I hope you understand.
What you can do
If you've bought the game, you may play around with it and modify it. I'd appreciate it if you didn't use this for griefing, though, and remember not to distribute the changes.
Any tools you write for the game from scratch belong to you. You're free to do whatever you want with screenshots and videos of the game, but don't just rip art resources and pass them around. Pluginsfor the game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, including selling them for money.
Now, what you must ask yourself is, are you making plugins for the game from scratch, or making money distributing a modified version of Minecraft, which is illegal as stated by Mohjang??
In computing, a plug-in (or plugin) is a set of software components that adds specific abilities to a larger software application. If supported, plug-ins enable customizing the functionality of an application. For example, plug-ins are commonly used in web browsers to play video, scan for viruses, and display new file types. Well-known plug-ins examples include Adobe Flash Player and QuickTime.
In other words, Minecraft (still) doesn't have any kind of plugin support, which means... you are distributing modified parts of the game, and embed them in the game. So, making money with them is FORBIDDEN.
Your adfly ads are, somehow, illegal. And that proves that WE ARE NOT THIEVES and YOU ARE NOT MAKING ANY KIND OF JOB. Next time, read the TOS before making any step further!
When the API is released, if it is, Notch will give you rights to make profits from your mods. Until then, you are not allowed to do that. Remove your forced adfly links or I'll report all of you for breaking the Terms of Service!
Plugins for the game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, including selling them for money.
Plugin, in Minecraft sense - modification added to add some functionality to the original game. Change, in Minecraft sense - a modification that changes how the game works (well, using Minecraft as a game engine to create your own game).
Examples of plugins:
TooManyItems
SSPCommands
Pistons
Examples of changes:
ZombieCraft
AdventureCraft

"Two wrongs do not make a right."
Let's say, I do not have the required licensing to manufacture firearms ... but I do, anyway. That is therefor illegal.
Now, let's say you take one, and refuse to pay me what I asked for. THAT IS STILL THEFT.
It doesn't matter whether I did wrong in MAKING the thing you took without paying, not when it comes to judging "did you steal". What matters is, YOU TOOK WITHOUT PAYING. The best you can do, is not to prove you are not doing something wrong ... but instead, that you're not THE ONLY ONE doing something wrong.
Remove your forced adfly links or I'll report all of you for breaking the Terms of Service!
.... and get laughed at by Mojang? Hey, if that's what you want ... go for it.
You don't understand that, if you are selling firearms without permisson, and I get your firearms for "free", that's stealing the thief. In my country, there's a saying that says "Whoever robs a thief, has a thousand years of pardon". That doesn't make you a thief, it makes you a hero. Never heard of Robin Hood?
Stealing from a criminal, is still theft. You know what would happen in any civilized nation, if the above scenario happened, and then the authorities got involved? We'd be given neighboring cells in prison. My criminal act would in no way be allowed to justify yours.
Now serious, you don't understand that you can't make profits from something you don't own.
Sure, fine, I don't disagree with this part in the slightest degree.
But, if you take without paying...? That's still theft, and those who steal are thieves.
Now, remove your forced ads because they are illegal.
What forced ads? We've been over this already, magnus - I don't have any ads, because I don't have any MineCraft mods. At all.
Well if you aren't warned, then its a **** move. But if you are warned of the ads, then you can make an informed choice. I honestly don't care about ads, so long as the product/service is good. But if its some noob money mooching, then I honestly think those people should be banned for trying to get easy money from us.

Well.. IT is just 5 seconds. And it IS free money...
So.. I'm on the modders side.
Just think about it.
We wait ONLY a few seconds to get something we wanted...
Then the modders earn a litle money for their work they just did...
I don't see anything wrong with waiting...
The ads are just a little annoying because they are horrible ads.
If you just go do something quickly for like 1 minute the ad will be over.
1 minute isn't that long. Unless you stare at the computer waiting it to end. Then it takes a while.
Also the modders barely get any money. It is like.. half a cent each view?
Not really a job worthy pay, so you modders shouldn't rely on modding for income.
I can just say that both sides are wrong right now.
Eg.
People are annoyed that modders are greedy little thieves for trying to get easy money, just because they worked to make something and thought it was worth something.
Modders saying stop being whiners. We worked hard for that money. Even though it is hardly anything at all. Well you worked for something. Like 5 cents... So yeah. You worked really hard for 5 cents.
Well.. I was going to type that huge paragraph. But I guess this will never work out anyways with everyone fighting.

I always wanted to try out these quizzes... A trader?! Are you serious! I wanted a bow!
Also, I told you I paid for the game in alpha status, and I can have any part of it, modified or not, with no extra charge.
We Alpha purchasers can have any part, modified or not, that is produced by Mojang, free of charge. Our contract-of-sale with Mojang does not, and can not, impose any Duty or Limitation upon third parties who were never part of the original offer.

I have the same code, but modified. It's still Mohjang property, so It's legal, sorry.
Who the hell is Mohjang? Get out.
Seriously, it clearly says, and said, in the ToS, and the Alpha ToS, that any plugins belong to you and you can do anything with them, like sell for money.
Install it
Go to an ad site
