Because destroying something that someone spent long hours tediously building is wrong. What you just said is so outrageously stupid, that it amazes me that you were able to figure out how to spell everything correctly.
Well, actually, if you go into someones house without their permission, fill it with TNT, set it on fire, pour lava on it and possibly kill them in the process you would probably go to jail.

If somebody came up and destroyed my sand castle, id probably have to hold myself back from destroying his face lol. You did not even state how you would react if somebody did that, you just said they would not be real life banned so it shouldn't be a problem. Well in real life terms, a ban would be a conflict of either a verbal argument or physical one. Most people would react with anger and surprise if anyone stomped on their sand castle.
I think your metaphor actually proves that there is something wrong with griefing. Personally i think its retarded, just troll like behavior that deserves the BANHAMMER!!!!!! Lets say you just get finished with building a huge castle that took you hours on end, you leave the server to come back to a pile of rubble. It would be a lie if you said that you didn't care.
I see nothing wrong with it just as long as it meets these requirements:
It's creative, not just spamming lava or fire
Taking the guy's torches at night with monster spawning on is freaking hilarious
No tnt is used, and if they used tnt, it should be in a way that is creative (such as putting a pressure plate and letting the TNT fall on the guy xD
Yes, I own a server, and i laugh my ass off whenever my house get's griefed :biggrin.gif:
I'll play devil's advocate and agree with the original poster. I'm agreeing that griefers should not be banned.
Yes, it's a LOT easier to destroy than it is to build. I can take 10 TNTs and destroy what took you 10 hours to build, and something like that should not be praised, but should we ban?
We are all on paid accounts, so if you're known as a griefer, you aren't gonna really last long or succeed on a server. Everyone is going to see your name. They might grief 1 or 2 people, and then leave the server. Really the ones you should worry about are the server-hopping habitual griefers. The ones that jump from server to server and just ruins worlds. Contrary to what you may believe, most people don't do this. Griefing usually happens because you're on server, and you made someone mad, and if they know where you live or where you built your base, then they can come and grief you. If you're cool, then most people wont waste their own time to mess you up. "You don't bother me and I sure enough won't bother you" - Snoop. Like stolly said, no one in real life would do that. And since we are all real people, and real people don't spend their life just trying to mess up other people.
Let's say that we were on a server where you're stuck on the server. Permanent residents. A pure griefer would not be able to survive really, and after a while, people would recognize your name kill you on sight. You'd be on the Most Wanted list. Some servers have a JAIL system, where they punish (not BAN) people. Give them a timeout.
I'm not even a griefer, but I too wanted to "grief." I was on a pvp server, and I got killed (I apparently was in his home). I asked him for my items back and told him I didn't even know it was his house (it was just a tunnel, and there were signs saying "XXXXXXX KEEP OUT XXXXXXX," but whatever, I was just exploring) but he refused to give my items back (I JUST joined the server and all I had were basic stone tools, craftbox, furnace, and some dirt/cobblestone/wood). He was being shady (imo) so I wanted to grief him. Server rules stated that stealing, pvp, is ok, but griefing is not, so I didn't grief. Instead, I searched and found him, the melee sworded his ass. It only took 4 hits and an 1 arrow. He had no armor. Took his drops (2 diamonds, 50ish coal, 15 lapiz) and his buddy tried to hunt me down, but I'm pretty good with my bow so I kept him at bay and he stopped chasing, and I escaped. I just wanted to kill him back, and I didn't really wanna take diamonds from him, but whatever.
I think the idea that a lot of us spend of lot of time on building something, and someone else can come and just destroy it, is what makes people hate the idea of greifers, but that usually doesnt happen. If you want to set laws to stop it, I swear it's going to hurt us. NO TNT on 95% of servers. TNT! One of the most dynamic tools in the game is disabled because of the fear of greifers.
In the minecraft sandbox, if someone wants to be the criminal, the robber, the villain, the bad guy, the building stomping godzilla, then let them be. They obviously won't be popular in the sandbox, and EVEN if you built a nifty castle, and bully godzilla stomped it, just move on. Fight them off, but you shouldn't hate them.

A real life analogy to BAN is BANISHMENT. Ban means you are completely unallowed to step foot into the server. Banishment on a server is like banishment from a world (or country, state, city, whatever). That's not a verbal argument or even physical fight.
Also, if you built a big tower, let's say 40x40 and 50 blocks tall. It would take at least 20 stacks of TNT and a lot of time to destroy that. I'm not sure, but if the greifer is spending that much TNT to destroy what you built, you must've done something to **** him off. TNT isn't cheap.

And as for the people that have hack mods and spawn themselves TNT?
Maybe if the tower is perfectly strait up, with nothing on it, it wouldn't be so bad. What if you have a pixel art cloth floor that you spent hours getting right, and they run in and hit it with a flint and steel? Or have lava lined walls, TNT near them causes a lot of extra damage, because now lava is leaking on your floor.
Also 20x64=1280, that 40x40x50 tower is completely gone if the person knows what they are doing with TNT. You will have random floating blocks left of the creation you spent hours on, and you have to gather all of the stone from scratch if you are not online when the griefer destroys your building.

EXACTLY!
It's part of the game. I mean, I've screwed myself over before by losing 25+ diamonds because I wanted to keep mining rather than go back to base and restock/stow away, and then BAM, fell into lava, and I wasn't quick enough to save myself. I exited the game. Looked at my computer, and what made it worse was that it was my first batch, so I didn't even have extra diamonds to make tools, but I accepted it.
Also, if you're worried about being griefed, hide your house either under water, secret passage, iron doors, or somewhere with less traffic. If you build your house near the server spawn, then you're gonna get somewhat griefed. Also, signs that say unfriendly things like "keep out" or "this is my house, not yours" only invite people in.
Most people wont mess with your stuff though. Rarely are there people who like to blow up hard works of art.

Are there hack mods to spawn TNT on someone else's server? I haven't heard of that.
Yes, what if someone blew up a 100x100x64 statue made completely of dyed cloth that was a 3d depiction of Michaelangelo's sistine chapel? No greifer would take joy in blowing that up. My point is that no one is gonna greif works of art. They'll only grief you if you're being stuck up, treating people bad, or something.
Also, if you did build something like that, then the admins would notice, and would protect it and make that area unbreakable. In the public realm though, no one builds things that elaborate, and no one destroys at will. You guys have too much fear.

I have only been griefed once, when I wasn't even online while the griefer was. He hacked in TNT, and flint and steel, placed TNT everywhere, set most of it off, and lit anything flammable before Admin noticed what he was doing and banned him. I wasn't even online, my building was in the opposite direction of everyone else, and it honestly wasn't all that great, as I had just started playing minecraft not too long before this happened.
The only griefers I have seen/heard of take joy in blowing up, and causing as much grief as they can before they get banned.
You have too much faith in human kindness. Assholes exist, and will do anything to spread pain, because they can.

Its analogy to what an INTERNET ban for griefing would be in real life on a beach. Its pretty rare for a person to own a beach, let alone owning cities, states, countries, or whatever. So yea, the word ban DOES mean banishment, which DOES mean to be banned from a place, but in the context given, its nearly impossible for me or most people to banish somebody off of a public beach for destroying a sand castle lols. So since you cant ban somebody for griefing you in real life, the closest thing to that would be confronting them about it, which most likely would be some kind of dispute. Whyd you grief my sand castle dud!? YOur getting a the BANHAMER!!!!!! * proceeds to flay fists around violently in a helicopter propeller type fasion *
Griefiers are fails. I can understand if it was on some anarchic pvp server, however most servers aren't that, and most people, dont own beaches
lets say youre building a sandcastle at the beach and someone just comes along and steps on it. would he get a real life ban? nahh.
You'd be wishing for a ban and not the ass beating you would receive in it's place if you tried that with me.
So no. You wouldn't have the balls to try that in real life. The threat of having someone stomping a mud hole in your ass and kicking it dry would make you stop and take another look at what you were about to do.
Well, actually, if you go into someones house without their permission, fill it with TNT, set it on fire, pour lava on it and possibly kill them in the process you would probably go to jail.
Singleplayer= no griefing.
Multiplayer: my luck every time i go on a server with a good mature comminty that i like, it gets griefed by some troll who just cant be smart enuogh(i Know i spelt that wrong) To go and blow up a dougeon or cave instead.
I hate Griefers.
I Am not happy.
so why should it be any different in minecraft?
P.S mystical dwarves are living underground us!!
It is more like someone letting you in their house, and you getting mad because they kicked you out for throwing their TV across the living room.
See, in yours, the sand doesn't really belong to you, where as the server owner essentially owns everything on his/her server.
It's hard to follow your dreams when you run from your nightmares. --
