what didn't make sense? If you know what triggered Notch to go from alpha to beta, do tell. I see no change in the direction of the updates of the game. I can only believe Notch wanted to stop promising people free updates after release and get %25 more on sales. This is what I meant. I assume once Notch feels like he wants more money, he will "release" the game. Meaning he will sell the game as finished even though it might not be. I am just saying that it is possible since he did it once before.

So you say 1.4 is fail because you don't know how to update your server? WTF
Thats like saying all cars fail because you don't know how to put gas in them.
Well, since it hasn't happened yet I won't doubt Notch and assume he will release a finished game. There will probably be a huge update when the game goes Gold, too.
And before anyone gets mad, notch has said he will work on the game after release.
I think it will be done before November, I think the game will be updated a lot during the summer.
Technically he said he would only keep updating and releasing expansions for as long as people buy the game, but I'm cool with that as long as he releases the modding API like he said he would. But then again we don't even have lanterns yet so...

He also said there would be dragons, books you could write in, more vehicles than just boats, a fix to the jukeboxes in multiplayer, lanterns, varying difficulty based on height, a modding API, nightly builds, more varied weaponry than just swords and bows...
I agree with zoram. The only significant difference between alpha and beta, besides the time that has passed, is price and the package. The game conveniently moved to a "beta" when it was most economically convenient, i.e. in the midst of a surge in sales. Normally betas are more or less feature complete and there is a large focus on debugging, and yet the largest bugs continue to be ignored in favor of mod-quality content updates (while superior mods obsolesce due to the version change). In reality Minecraft is just a side, hobby project that has lost its novelty to Notch. Any public statement he's made about it isn't to be taken seriously, because they're just PR/political moves to allay any suspicion from the fact that he obviously barely cares about this game except for the money that it gives him. For example:
Move to beta: justifying increase in price in the middle of sale spike (this isn't necessary but he's just enough of a wenis to think it is and it obviously worked, judging from the responses here)
Announcement of ETA/estimate of completion: pretending that Mojang has a plan (justifying test version sales)
Comments about stress/office construction/conferences/interviews: excuses as to why he's not working fulltime (for the 5 or so Minecraft fans left that remember the significance of this)
Accordingly, Minecraft will be "released" (it was actually released many months ago) when Notch is done extending even the meager effort he is putting out. Since the popularity of Minecraft is bound to die out before November, I'm pretty sure, he'll probably just call it good earlier and raise up the price for posterity.

BETA
"When we release a pure bugfix update, people get VERY upset ("NOTHING CHANGED!").. Adding features gives us much happier users. But I do realize that it's only happier users in the short term." - Notch
I sence it.
LOL
Exactly

What the hell is so funny about this? I am begin serious. ok maybe not 2017, but at least it should take up to 2015.

notch should just release the source code...we wouldn't need him after that.
