I would like to hear your guys opinions on the idea of bringing a bed into minecraft because personally i think it has its pros and cons but for my style of playing it is more cons.
Pros:
It would be great to have an item that is actually a bed instead of improvising with slabs and wool.
It could introduce a great new feature into the game, such as a dream world.
For some players it would be great to skip the night because sometimes the night is scary and boring because most people stay inside and hide until day.
Maybe notch could add new ways to move in minecraft other than standing and crouching, he could add a button to lay down.
Cons:
For players like me skipping the night would npt be fun because i like to go out and kill monsters and get their material, and yes i know i dont have to use the bed if i dont want to.
It would only be able to be used in single player because in a multiplayer server some people would want to skip the night while others like the night.
Thanks. And please discuss this, this thread can also be used to discuss other upcoming items within minecraft.
Yeah i guess it would be a good addition to a bedroom but what do you guys think of notch maybe creating a dream relam where you could spend the night and wake up when you die in the dream or maybe make an alarm clock. Then the bed idea would be great but it would be too much work for notch.
In the dream realm maybe you could not keep some items but there could be special items only in the dream realm
That you can bring back to make you house more unique.
And what other house based items do you think there would be?

I was really confused about how you got a dream realm to come from a bed. but I get it now. I wouldn't expect a said "dream realm" to exist before the Aether exists..
As I've said in another thread, the most interesting prospect to me about the upcoming beds is that they are supposed to reset the spawn point to the last bed you sleep in, which will be a fantastic addition, IMHO. We won't be tethered to one spawn anymore. We can more freely explore one MC world, rather than generating a bunch of different ones.
As it stands now, you "can" go explore a world as far as you want to... until you die. Then you end up way back where you started. If you're beyond a 5 minute walk, goodbye items for good. If you've built your current settlement even just a few MC days walk away from spawn, have fun walking all the way back there. Assuming you can even get back there. If not, have fun having a never-seen-again ruin.
I can't wait to be able to wander around and just explore. Set up a cabin with a bed at night to sleep and reset the spawn point, then do it all over again the next day. And with the better save files system in place, imagine how much easier it'll be to have these bigger maps as we go out exploring? Totally awesome.
I'm not concerned about griefers or exploiters using this feature. I don't play with morons. But from a single player standpoint (and multiplayer, if the spawn system works well) this freedom to explore will be amazing. People won't have the "I'm bored with my current world so I will generate a new one" excuse anymore. Imagine if you never had a use for the increased worlds mod that's out there, because just 5 worlds was too many.

Do you guys have any new item ideas because if you do post them and also if you have any other ideas about the bed tell me i would like hear all your ideas.
I like the potential to replenish your health. I've been just leaving minecraft idle and finding other things to do when night comes, but meh to that... Like maybe I'm building something outside but didn't finish, and I can't build in the dark because of mobs, so the wait for daylight is annoying.
One downside I can think of is it could replace the need to find food. People would just construct a bed whenever they get low health and we'd have all these silly cave-beds. You can't do the RPG thing where you're not allowed to sleep if there's mobs, because then you'd never be able to sleep even in your house. You could allow the mobs to try and get to you while you're sleeping, but then you'd be vulnerable at home too, and if you're actually skipping the night when you sleep you'd have no way to see a mob coming and stop yourself being killed.
Not sure how you could implement a "rest to heal" thing or a "skip the night" thing without it being broken or unbalanced. Maybe it just heals half a heart every 6 seconds while you stand on it, and time progresses normally, but spawn rates go up?
If there's a "dream world" involved the rate of time passing would be less of an issue. I can think of one useful purpose for it... It could be like a randomly generated normal world that gets thrown away as soon as you wake up, BUT the features on the surface are actually subtle clues for where the minerals are in your real world. You could walk around this space in real time while you are 'asleep' and you'd have to try to remember where it was you saw the clues when you wake up, and mine away in that direction.
Example: Go to sleep and find yourself in a giant desert biome, but everywhere in the real world there was iron within 5 vertical levels of your bed there is an oasis, and everywhere there was diamond a chicken spawned in dream-land. Wake up and think "okay I saw a bunch of chickens over that way... I think..."
For some reason when I first heard of beds I thought of a dream realm too. Probably pretty surreal, with like weird colors and stuff.
But other then that, I'm just excited for some furniture. In my opinion furniture is one of the biggest things that could add some life to Minecraft. Finally, those giant castles shall be empty no more :biggrin.gif:

Beds are fine the way they are as most people just spend their times waiting for the sunrise in their houses anyways, this just skips that waittime, and add in the fact that you can't sleep unless you are in a perfectly safe environment, you have a well balanced item.
Giving it the ability to heal you however, WILL make it overpowered. Not only that it's unrealistic, get shot in the chest by an arrow, go to sleep, the wound is now diamonds! Not saying that minecraft is realistic :B never was

Now if only there were gates for fences...
My humble LPs can be found here.
What do you guys think some more house based objects would be?
Also maybe make some designs such as:
= bucket of water

Could be a sink.
And yes goodoldgamer that is very true and i think that would be a great addition.
If the bed idea is used that'd be pretty awesome
