I have a friend that I only know from online (Never met IRL) and I keep asking him to try Minecraft but he doesn't like single player games and would only be interested in playing the game multi player. I was just wondering if there is any way that he could play online with his non legitimate Minecraft version. I understand this sounds terrible but I know he would buy it if he wished to continue playing. Any help would be much appreciated.
Just tell him to play the classic(free) version of multiplayer...if he likes it then tell him to watch some machinima videos about minecraft. He will be forced to buy it just like everyone else
Oh God, don't have him play the classic. I played classic and thought this "Minecraft" thing was stupid. I then, on impulse, just bought the damn game and I haven't looked back since.

You'll have to host the server and put up with name changing griefers though
OP just buy the damn game if you want to play MP, piracy isn't cool
