Personally I prefer minecraft as Dwarf Fortress is quite hard to pick up. The game is extremely complex and is not simple to play or find help for. Now I do like Dwarf Fortress, but if I really want to have fun in it, I would have to dedicate many hard hours, which to me, is not really worth it.

I dont think that Dwarf Fortress is in the same league as Minecraft, simply because of how long it takes to learn how to play. Minecraft is one of those "anyone can play" games which is going to make it much more popular.

"He's trolling the game mechanic itself. And succeeding."
Dwarf fortress all the way. It seems hard to get into (and generally is), but if you get a good tileset (replaces the ascii with nicer looking 2D art) and if you follow this one tutorial called 'Dwarf fortress for beginner's ' or somesuch, it's actually really easy and fun to play.
Right now, minecraft is just too new. Too little content to keep you going for too long. It all depends on your own creativity. Dwarf fortress is similar, but with a hell of a lot more complexity and content. A lot of crazy things happen in dwarf fortress. The craziest thing I've seen in minecraft is either a gigantic detailed structure (which is cool btw) or a creeper blowing something up.
They are pretty similar though. Creepers and Carp have a lot in common. Voted for DF.
Btw, whoever picks "never heard of minecraft" or "never heard of either" is just doing it for the lulz.
I think both are awsome and I have a lot of fun with them. But i'll compare the pros and cons of both DF and Minecraft. Feel free to add some if you don't think I covered them all.
Dwarf Fortress
Pros:
-Indepth battle system
-Possible 2000 years of history
-Really easy to mod
-Addicting
-FREE!
Cons:
-Hard to get into
-ASCII grahics
-No way to win
-No multi-player
Minecraft
Pros:
-Easy to get
-Good grahics
-A large amount of things to build
Cons:
- Costs money
- No point
- Not a whole lot to do
I tried to be completely fair with the rating. However, I think this thread is really pointless, seeing as the fans are just going to vote for their own game. Don't believe me? Check our forums equivalent.

I like both, but I think Dwarf Fortress is better in a lot of ways. Minecraft has two big pluses, being multiplayer and having understandable graphics. Dwarf Fortress has a ton of big pluses; amazingly-detailed combat, simulating history, magabeasts, building and crafting superior to Minecraft's, better fluid physics, more building mechanisms, traps, weather, a setting and time period we actually understand, a universally-intelligent player base...

Dwarf Fortress is a game I'm still learning after roughly 2 or so years of playing it. It's got a heck of a learning curve, it's really difficult to master, and has a lot of very sophisticated game mechanics that you can be extremely creative with.
On the other hand, Minecraft doesn't take very long to learn, and it's simple and quick to pick up and play while also providing a lot of opportunities for creativity.
It mostly just depends on what I'm in the mood for, really. Some days it's nice to play something simple, other days I'd prefer to sink myself deep into complex mechanics. :biggrin.gif:
Edit: Good freaking god, why did I have to submit this post 12 times for it to actually post??
I found dwarf fortress only after i played minecraft and was blown away by DF. The problem with DF is it's accessibility, you cna do so much but the interface ( which is in the alpha) is so punitive and labyrinthine its' very difficult to wrestle with even with dwarf therapist.
While i can appreciate Dwarf Fortress for its depth and complexity it isn't personally for me. I haven't been able to figure it out well enough to play, and i'm the sort of person who at least needs reasonably decent looking tile graphics in a game (I know... someone's working/worked on that.)
Minecraft is a simple pick up and go 'game' that offers much for the bored mind to do.
Even though I can't get my head around playing it I recognize DF for just how jawdropingly hilarious it can be. Bronze Murder.... that should say it all.
Then again Minecraft is exceedingly moddable. Who knows what will be added next (even without taking official updates into account.)

I don't feel comfortable hard comparing those two games. I feel even more uncomfortable at the Idea of picking a favorite.
Whilst I play more Minecraft right now, I'd never say, that I like it more than DF. DF has a whole set of different qualities than MC. All those negative aspects and arguments regarding DF don't even affect me anymore. I don't think, that it looks bad. Whenever I see the map, I only see huge mountains, lush valleys and dwarves f***ing up goblins bloodily on a field. :3

And like the baseless fabric of this vision, the cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, the solemn temples, the giant Screen itself, all of which we inherit shall dissolve. And, like an insubstantial pageant faded, leave not a byte behind.

Dwarf Fortress is far more moddable. Just look at the modding section of the DF forums or look in the raw files in the DF folder. It's crazy. You can make new items, creatures, actions, civilizations. Everything, really.
Is Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress a better game overall? Which is more fun? More to do? Your overall favorite?
Explain your reasoning behind your decision.
You, sir, are a genius. And all this time I thought he was being sarcastic and that the concept of humor simply eludes you. Bravo.
I picked it for the lulz :biggrin.gif:

I may take offense if you don't think it's helpful, but then I'll ask what you don't find helpful about it.

Minecraft has broad appeal
Dwarf Fortress appeals to a few hardcore people
I like both ♥
