Thank you for making this game. I've registered on these forums to convey my message.
When I was young, I remember my grandfather playing on the computer. As time went by, I grew older and wanted to see what he was doing. Well, he taught me to play the games he would play. I remember sitting on his lap and decreeing what he was to do in my little area. "Send swordsmen there, attack that building, make more gold." So on and so forth.
Eventually, I moved away. I kept the games he gave me and played them, trying to master them so when i came back I'd be able to show him the tricks and the techniques I'd learned. As time went by, the gaming industry advanced, becoming faster-paced, confusing even. My grandfather struggled to keep up, and eventually just stopped playing at all. He lost the fire of gaming, could no longer participate when me and my brothers would play. I hated that. The man who once taught me to play, gave me the first controller on his console every time we'd play, sat through my never-ending commands could no longer play.
Then, a friend of mine showed me minecraft. It was unlike any game I'd previously played, not too fastpaced, no time-trials, no quests, just the discovery and joy of creating things, dodging various monsters and finding huge underground caves and dungeons. On the latest trip i took to my grandparent's house, i got my grandfather to download the game. He was extremely enthusiastic after what i told him about it, and after it downloaded(takes a bit longer in rural oregon) we fired it up. You should have seen the excitement in his eyes. He's promised me that the next time I return to his house, he'll show me all the cool stuff he's built.
Thank you Notch for allowing me to give the joy of gaming back to my grandfather.
My Granddad taught me to play myst when i was very young, quake and doom when I was a bit older. It was a really great experience for me. But i was not able to reciprocate my love of gaming back to him as he died of Alzheimers disease after a 10 year long battle. This warms my heart. +1

On an unrelated note, screenshots or save files? I don't know which one would be better.
This is a great story, thanks for sharing this with us. :biggrin.gif: It's nice to see an oldtimer get back into the game, so to speak. Kudos to you for being a good grandkid, too!
As far as what you end up posting, both would be good, but I'd say screenies for sure.

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.
Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that there is no such thing as playing Minecraft normally.

Hehe thanks ^^. And yeah, I'll try to get some screenies next time i visit.
Unfortunately my grandparents aren't coming. It snowed and they're not willing to risk driving through it. Oh well, I'll just get him to send me screenshots via email.
You should fire up a Multiplayer server so you and your G-pa can play together all the time.
I would but as the post says, he's in rural oregon. That being said, not even dial up goes there. like his upload/download has various thresholds that he can't surpass. Great idea though :tongue.gif:
here's a stupid question anima but did you go on a cruise this year?
No sir, I did not. Noone else in my family did either.

this is a very beautiful story, and i understand those who almost started crying.
or in *4chpeak* "cool story bro"
I wonder what games did/do your grandpa played/play?
Heroes Chronicles: Flight of the dragons(or something like that), Age of Empires 2(and the expansion), Majesty, warcraft 3.
On consoles we played various star wars games and halo.
Currently, he doesn't play anything except minecraft. I play the CoD games starting from 4 on up. On the computer I chat on warcraft 3. I'd play sc2 but I have a terrible computer.
