The newest update just make this whole thing goes unstable and crazy which i think it's still acceptable. But however, I can't understand Why the hell Notch just did this... "Free-to-play weekend" stuff. i meant, if he tried to compensate the players about the server crash, he sure did a bad move since people who play SMP are already premium. Free-to-play weekend might be an awesome idea to attract people to Minecraft, yea, people can go to servers and put lava everywhere with hacks, get another name then rejoin. That is just lovely, very good way to ruin our fun, the ones who paid. besides, I don't really think people will actually pay for this game after they griefed the hell out of servers. I meant... come on! if they grief'ed for free, why they want to pay for more griefing?!

I think this might get more people to buy the game. Sorta like a 2 day demo for those unsure whether or not to buy. Anyways, have you ever heard of Ip bans and private whitelists (no list of whitelisted names)?
As long as the non-premiums don't know any names that are whitelisted on a server than it should be fine. But then theres the matter of impersonations which can be resolved by common ip addresses that the certain user goes on in order to identify (or around an area/city/state). Though this doesn't always work.
Quick answer to your inability to understand Notch's reason:
He had to disable everything related to player accounts while the server is busy being on fire. As I understand it, he had to choose between letting NO ONE play Minecraft until the server's back up, or letting EVERYONE play it. Forcing his fans to not play for an entire weekend, or perhaps longer, is a hell of a lot worse than letting new people get a taste for free. It wasn't a marketing maneuver, it was a last-ditch effort to keep his game from dying completely over the weekend.
This.
I've been DREAMING of playing the alpha, and now I can because of this weekend. Even tho the patch screwed allot of things up, I'm for one, VERY VERY happy.
This will gain him a lot of customers because people can actually test the game before buying it now and if they like it can buy once the server is back up. Sure the other public servers will take a hit, but they can easily change the limit on who can join and temporarily blacklist names until he fixes things and when everything is fine, remove the blacklisted names and if the griefers come back they'll be permanently banned. Besides, like already stated, it was all or nothing and the only smart move was everything or a LOT more people would end up leaving and Notch would be getting a lot more hate mail than potential (or actual) buyers. Please think before posting about how "stupid" a decision Notch makes is. It would be nice to have this locked.
