i still say that a 6x6x6 area would work, thered be only 3 per person but its not to protect your house, its to protect small caches of importance. the idea of a complete and total way to protect your house is to much also the rules of the flag would be like this:
things inside are only destroyed by the user and lava
thats it, i mean it allowes for destruction by nature and enimies but only ith hard work
IMO, there should be a ranking system. Like, guards for example, can enter land claims, PLACE blocks but not damage them. This would be an effective way to allow certain people to defend land claims/houses from things that go boom (creepers) The rank would also increase if the noobs or newer people on the server produces a certain amount of resource, say 25 planks or mines 1 diamond.
how about you can only attack a "clan" if you declare war on them first? but they will also be able to attack you.we could also have diplomats, and can propose cease fire and alliances!!!11one1one!

oh hurr dat so g00d ideia
me think notch shud drop mutiplay and maek dat. hurr
Problem solved: Imma play with friends on a hard mode co-op server where we build amazing structures while defending our property from mobs or occaisional PvP sessions wherewe play by the honor system and use only our own resources.
everyone says notch's landclaim flags are bad, well just hear me out.
it's not possible for magical stuff to keep you from destroying something in real life.
but we also HAVE a real life and are not always there to protect our stuff! unike in real life, where you'd always be ther to protect it.
in otherords, no limit to flag production, (although maybe only 2 bases? as in only 2 different unconnected flag spots, and all others must be interconnected.) and a reasonable flag extent.

I still don't see why land claim flags are necessary at all.
Why should people's buildings and chests be completely un-destroyable? What's to stop somebody from running around attacking people and then just retreating into their invincible underground fort that nobody can get into?
If somebody is using hacks, then the admins can just ban their accounts. Why are land claim flags necessary to fight hackers? Doesn't make sense.
Finally, if somebody is offline, why should their stuff remain indestructible and unlootable? What's to stop somebody from just building an un-destroyable box around the spawn point and then just logging off? Why should peoples stuff be protected when they aren't even playing the game?
If somebody has to log off and doesn't want their stuff to get stolen, then they can find a desert island and bury their loot in a secret chest there. Otherwise there stuff shouldn't be protected. Anyway if they have friends who are staying then their friends can always help to protect their stuff. If not, then it's fair game.
land claim flaghs, should not claim land at all. they should merely only set the players spawn point (aside from being able to respawn at the default location, and admins being able to teleport to other players)
also, who thinks chests should be password protected?

Give me an internet, or Chuck Norris will kill you!!!
How about this: Friendly NPCs? Though I'm sure it's probably been thought of before, it could still help in situations where a player is offline. Say they have a base set up, with their land claim flag or whatever, which would probably be more of a spawn flag or something like that. But through that flag, they have access to a whole host of base properties, including the ability to purchase various sorts of NPCs to do various things, such as tending to farms, guarding, possibly even mining. Yeah, it'd make the whole AI thing quite a bit more complex, but at the same time, it'd also help to flesh out the online game world.
As far as guards go, you could have several types, including:
-Stationary melee guards. These would for the most part stand in one spot, until spotting an intruder (likely, someone not on some sort of "friends" list or something), at which point, they'd run towards them and attack, sort of like the already existing zombie.
-Archer guards. These ones you'd want to place higher up, like on the outer walls and such. Basically, they'd remain stationary as well, until spotting an intruder, at which point they'd open fire like a skeleton.
-Patrolling guards. These ones would be like the either of the above, but patrol a certain path set up by the base owner. To make up for their patrolling nature, they'd probably be a bit weaker than the stationary variety.
Of course, said guards could be customized with different armor and weapons, and would work best through being paid on a "daily" basis, or something like that. That way, the base owner would still have to play at least on a semi-regular basis, and if they do quit or something, then eventually the base will no longer be guarded, and be completely up for grabs, including any supplies.
Overall, I think that way of protecting bases would work SOOOOOO much better than silly land claim flags and invincible fortresses. It'd force people to build intelligently (Do I add high walls for archers, or save money and have only the important things guarded), and also force them to play on a regular basis, to make more money, to be able to afford to keep their guards and other NPCs working as they should.
