I know its been discussed before with ideas for land claim flags and what not but i think that some system of ownership is going to be necessary to avoid massive griefing; namely stealing of peoples items while they're offline, and hack griefers absolutley obliterating the maps.
Anyway I've been thinking on the problem for a while and i believe i have come out with an effective solution. First, people would be given about 5 claim flags to start(additional flag distribution or removal would be left to the administrators), these flags would claim an area of 50x50x1E99 blocks. the flags would cause people (other than the owner and his friends/hirelings, etc) inside the zone to be unable to use any tools except maybe a sword and bow , this would prevent griefers from destroying homes and building while still allowing people access to said buildings. for this to work notch would have to make stone indestructible again without tools which was only removed last time because of the spawn houses tendency to pop up underground. Secondly we need doors. they would be two tiles tall and only allow the owner and his friends through, and combined with claim flags would provide an effective means of protecting a building from theft.
But that is just my idea, anyone have something they think is better or should be added?
The server could have an option to enable or not the stealing of crafted blocks, so nobody could steal your diamond blocks but they could still take your dirt...
I don't think it should be made so it's impossible to take items out of chests, because that makes the game less interesting.
However, I do think landclaim flags should make it impossible to destroy a base, because if there was no way to keep people from just mining/burning (etc) your building, you'd be building a base every day.
But, I don't think the landclaim flag should make mining under the building impossible, either. That'd hurt miners trying to gather materials and provoke stealing.
I think flags should be limited to one a piece. Any more and the chances of exploiting them to grief others increases. Also, this would encourage co-operation. Want a bigger fort? find someone who is willing to share flag space with you.
Doors have already been suggested plenty of times before and we all regard them as necessary.
Honestly, I think the best thing to do with MP is eventually to give the admins all the power to customize the game play on a server. Friendly co-operative, anarchistic to free for all brawls. I think flags will play an important role in that. Say on a friendly server your flag makes everything in your base invincible all the time with no weapons use inside. Other servers could make it invincible only when your offline, and other could make it a smaller zone just to encompass your chests.

The amount of land you claim is decided by how tall your flag is from sea level (z = 0). You can only build in gold bricks. So... it'd sort of be like an E-penis.

Im starting to think that land claim flags should be a temporary device until notch creates traps such as pressure plates, pumps, and floodgates. or maybe thats just me and my insatiable need to create devious DF style magma traps
Idea: Make land flag cover a larger area for more materials, but not materials which are extremely easy to get, because then people could just do it easily.
(I read on Notch's twitter he was going to make a gray brick which uses a lot of materials, maybe that could be what is needed for land flags, or the flag covering a larger area?)
I mean, we don't want people expanding to 1000x1000x1000 just because it uses dirt or coal or something.

I still hope it doesn't disallow building under the base, because that'd be annoying, to be mining and end up hitting into a land claim flag.

This game is about freedom. Say your attacking someones base with a large force. You are about to burn it down when he places a landclaim flag. Then your whole attack was for nothing. Im going to be raiding peoples bases. It's not griefing to destroy peoples bases
As long as it isn't a non-stop grief-fest I'll probably be happy. Free-for-all pvp is usually great fun.
I like the idea of a clan system where there is a clan claim that makes it much harder for non clanites to break things. There could even be personal claims that go inside the large clan claim which would let individuals set permissions for their house/plot/farm/latrine. Clan ranks would be a must so that the leaders can still do anything no matter what personal settings there are, and also for restricting recruiting and whatnot.
I'd love if there were a Kingdom option for several clans to ally together and form. It shouldn't do very much other than create a larger 'kingdom zone' that would basically claim more land, but without any coded enforcement. Like, you enter the kingdom zone and it tells you so, but you can still do anything you could before just as easily, it's just for fluff and borders, they could even overlap, creating more conflict potentially. Maybe the Kingdom thing would give more flexible respawn options, but then that would be abused as a teleport, so probably not.
I think there will have to be a small area (50x50?) around the initial spawn where nobody can dig, fight, build, die, or anything else, except Admins and those who Admins give permission to to build the Black Spawn Dungeon or somesuch.
The reason being, How long would it take a team of idiots to mine down, get diamond armor/swords and then just camp the spawn? Not long. Making a 50x50 safe-zone would make it much harder to do.

If landclaims make the claim invulnerable, then yes I agree completely. Nothing but Adminium should be invulnerable.

My house in the single Player Infdev is more than 12 blocks accrost and its not alot of room
