Always build your base at the biggest possible distance to the spawn point. It will make your base survive longer.
Don't make your shelter visible. Visible shelters are like deer with a "KILL ME" sign in the hunting season. Only with the hunters being replaced by griefers.
If you put a plant in the lava, and stand so your viewpoint is halfway inside the block (think a line going straight through the middle of your screen), you can see through the lava like it was air. Very useful for trying to figure out where the hell you are when you log onto a server that's already been flooded.
Hot tubs = DESTROYYYYYY
I was with soulaze or someone and we made a hottub, but that room was flooded.
Then the next day I went on, he was on, and we wanted to make another one, but with a pipe going down to it. I and he forgot that lava is infinite so it pored in and ruined the basement of our base.
Later we made a shaft to the surface, and spent the rest of the time yelling at griefers to get out. Surprisingly there was some left. The top layer of the tower.
Another time someone was spamming our house with plants, but they help... but they look ugly... eh...
so we told him/her to leave, but they were up in arms that he HAD to leave, so he griefed the roof to oblivion.
I've learned lots about building and the mechanics of the game from it, like the way the plants block lava /water and how they flow. It was also great for getting new ideas and learning to speed build.

A short list of lessons learned from theOne's Lava Survival:
1- I like to build ruined tombs too much
2- Never leave your base/building/Elaborate catacomb system unattended. Ever.
3- Accidentally flooding your own base/building/Elaborate catacomb system is griefing, apparently
4- Underground is the way to go
5- I take too long to build. The lava Zerg rushes me D:
Anyone like the hub design I always use?
Pre-survival player. Respect your elders :D.
