Trains (which would need a crapton of materials to make) that run on rails (which would take material to make) powered by coal.
Imagine riding through underground tunnels on you're own personal subway train, transporting materials, builders, weapons, and perhaps even other mounts from A to B or perhaps even C. Now THAT would be awesome.
Minecarts would be an interesting mechanic because they need tracks and are only point A to B so you would have to plan ahead.

Real Minecrafters craft goddamn mines.

But I thought Minecraft was supposed to be medieval. Minecarts don't seem very medieval to me. But mounts would work. Why did Notch seem so doubtful of mounts?
Mine craft isn't actually Themed (corect me if I'm wrong) But people make things that are medieval themed because they are simple and easy to recognize. And the enemies notch chose for survival aren't coherently medieval.
But yes, I do love mine carts. I would love to make complicated tracks, maybe even a (slow, depending on the mine crats speed) ROLLER COASTER!!!
But then I found Infiniminer. My god, I realized that that was the game I wanted to do. I played it in multiplayer for a while and had a blast, but found it flawed. ... I thought a fantasy game in that style would work really really well, so I tried to implement a simple first person engine in that style ... The response was very positive, and I was blown away at how good the framerate, and how well it ran in a browser, so I decided to go for it. ... And that’s where we are now.
The armor is supposed to look Ye Olde Time Armor, but I guess it might look a tad more modern than that. I have no plans for handguns or lasers, mostly because I don’t really like hitscan weapons in a game like this, but also to preserve the theme I’m going for.
From chatting on IRC, I’ve grown vague plans for a siege weapons expansion, with catapultable explosives, but I can’t promise anything yet.
So Notch has talked about Minecraft having a fantasy theme, which is generally medieval-like. I realize it's his game and he can do what he wants with it, but I just wanted to note that Notch has had medieval-like tendencies in the past.
Also madk, I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself. I think completing the fundamentals of survival mode is more important than luxuries like minecarts.
I apologize for my hasty comment, andy. But Fantasy leaves a big room for perception though, so mine carts could be very well within theme. (for example: Dwarfs) But I don't want to start a "theme" argument in a thread about mounts/vehicles. So back on-topic.
First of all, the designer's intention does not matter, as Minecraft has been observed to take on the form of any genre it wants (provided you have the tools and creativity to do so). Though Notch is certainly trying to maintain that image of fantasy gameplay and creatures, you will be able to mod the game extensively come the time when we receive the source code. As it is, actually, more people are actually ignoring the fantasy theme in general, in both building and server activities. The only real fantasy-themed servers I've been on are role-playing servers.
Oh, and mine-carts are very necessary. If you want a Dwarf Fortress-themed game mode, then mine-carts and other vehicles would be very useful for such a mode. Mine-carts themselves are based in the milieu of fantasy, so it would not be impeding the theme.

I cant say how awesome it would be to build a huge tunnel system with minecarts going through it. Sandbox mode would be ALOT cooler with interactive elements like that :biggrin.gif:
What about for a minecart there is a button like R for Ride and you jump in the cart when you press it. Where you can dump all your resources and jump in the front, you then press W as forward to move along the tracks, for Mines to Construction Site tracks there could be maybe 2 minecarts on there (When Multiplayer Survival comes out).
One person starts mining and jumps into the cart with his resources and zooms off, the other person starts doing the same thing. They both alternate between mining and dropping off the resources, then they can start building. What if there was crossing tracks and you could have crashes.
Just to make things simpler for now, instead of crafting the tracks there could be certain new ore that when you mine you get Railway tracks like you get stairs from coal ore. Maybe when the track is completely looped up then a minecart appears of a certain size, and you have your minecart.
There could be another way for it too. Instead of railway tracks we get a moving block, and when you make the track everyone put on there automatically moves in a certain direction, this could be made into a half track where instead of closing the track and looping the tracks its just one line, maybe a certain block wouldn't be affected by it, lets say Gold so that when you do do a looped track the gold stops any blocks that come around to you, this could also make you move along as well.

Talent didn't go anywhere, it just gets lost in all the noise. You have to find it.
The simplest idea for a vehicle, you need like blueprints, Zuriki suggested that a few months back in Survival, I don't know where. Like you have a blueprint, you place the blueprint and you build the certain blocks in the correct spots shown in the blueprint, once it's done the blueprint image disappears and you have a fully functional vehicle you can access by pressing R(Ride) next to it.
You could also have rideable mounts by pressing R next to pigs and sheep.

GMod's already got the Source Engine for physics.
All MineCraft has in the way of physics is falling sand, the gravity affecting the player, and liquids expanding into every open adjacent space.
I just meant along the lines of having a body, wheels and a seat.

I realize that, but I was just talking along the lines of the vehicles creation.
