The depressing song would be excellent for when in a cave underground. That's what I've always imagined it as.
The first time I heard the music was when I dug straight down and stumbled upon a cavern system. The timing of the music kicking in and the mood that it set were just too perfect; I thought for a moment that it was a scripted event of some sort.
So I was just poking around for the first time; you know--right click changes from break to build, let's make a little cave, etc... Though I was a bit unsure at what the game was trying to be.
