Introduction Are you increasingly disturbed by players who strip a land of its life and resources and move on, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake? Do you cringe when you see a server spawn wrecked by lazy would-be dirt-diggers and tree-choppers? Does the sight of an ugly, chaotic mass of stone and gravel make you weep for the picturesque meadow that was so cruelly destroyed? Then this challenge is for you. Minecraft is a lovely place, with its sweeping vistas and incredible terrain. Let's keep it this way.
Rules The rules are more simple than you'd think - and there's no PETA crap, either. Grassy plains look just as lovely no matter how many pigs were slain on them. No, the true focus is the preservation of the mountains and valleys that make Minecraft so beautiful, through an increasingly illogical set of limitations.
Dirt, stone, sand, and gravel: the forbidden blocks. You cannot collect dirt or stone, as this wrecks the terrain. Sand and gravel are also right out. However, collecting ores and cobblestone/stone bricks (from dungeons and strongholds) is allowed, and may be an essential survival tactic - as is looting villages for their materials, as you'll need to collect the stone with which to mine iron from somewhere other than the endless underground. Tilling dirt is also allowed, and will be required for any sort of farm. Cobblestone, not being a natural material, is totally allowed to be mined. Clay can also be mined due to its rarity.
Trees: your longtime buddies. Trees can be chopped and punched at any time. However, they must be replanted! The sapling you use to replant a tree does not need to be planted in the same spot as the tree you've cut down, nor does it need to come from the tree you've just planted. However, if a tree remains unreplanted five minutes after you've cut it down, your mind implodes and you will become unable to break anything but leaves until you plant that sapling.
Wild grass, reeds, pumpkins, cacti, and melons can all be farmed. However, when collecting reeds or cacti, leave the bottom of the plant intact so it can regrow. When collecting pumpkins, leave one behind in the patch. And for wild grass, break as much of it as you like.
Animals: they are tasty. Kill as many animals as you like. They just appear on grass anyway, it's not like they're a limited resource. In fact, sheep wool may become an excellent building material, since you can take as much of it as you like.
Deadly speed traps: if you ever find yourself in a pond with no blocks in your inventory and no way out, then quietly slip your head beneath the water's surface and inhale deeply. There's no sense waiting for hours in an inescapable situation.
Placing blocks is always allowed. Always. This is about preventing unfair excavation, not living in the scary open fields of Minecraft.
Survival Tactics It's a good thing you have me here to point out some handy tips. Read them over - preparation could save your life.
When you get trapped in a pond, you'll be forced to drown if you absolutely cannot escape by placing blocks. Be prepared for spills and falls - bring lots of wood so you don't end up stuck in an embarrassing little hole.
Finding cobblestone will be very difficult. You'll need to either track down a dungeon, a village, or possibly a stronghold. Once you've found some, you can either mine iron normally, or gain the nonflammable blocks necessary to make a cobble generator (which will require more iron for buckets, but will be better in the long run).
Cobblestone generators are your friends! Once you've set one up, you'll have unlimited cobblestone at no cost, which will drastically boost the blocks that are available to you. They'll require iron for buckets (check for villages/dungeons/strongholds!) and nonflammable blocks (such as desert well sandstone, village cobblestone, or dungeon cobblestone) and then you're off and running!
Materials will be scarce, as there will be no strip mines possible. You'll have to go spelunking often - make your house near an area with many cave entrances!
You'll have to make your shelter windowless at the beginning, as you cannot mine sand. However, you'll find iron bars in villages and strongholds. Another solution could be wood slabs or doors/hatches.
Predefined features are your friends. Villages and dungeons have valuable cobblestone and possible loot, strongholds have tons of rare blocks, and desert wells offer sandstone and sandstone slabs, materials that would normally be unobtainable.
How crafty are you willing to be? When you mine clay with sand above it, there may come about an unfortunate and totally unintentional scenario when you place a torch under the clay so that the sand falls on the torch and breaks. How tragic! Oh no! You'd better honour the noble sacrifice this sand has given you and collect it all.
Courtesy of Peazler (can't believe I forgot this) - Creepers will be your only method with which to collect blocks. In fact, this challenge may actually be much more difficult on Peaceful!
Thank you for reading... are you up for the challenge?!
Wow! That seems like a real challenge xD Although, animals ARE a limited resource. As of 1.9, they do not respawn upon killing due to the capability of breeding. Either way, I think I'm going to try it
Seems pretty interesting. Could be quite a challenge. I'm far too impatient to try this myself, unfortunately. I need a "Destroy the Planet" challenge.
I sent this thread to everyone that goes on my Minecraft/ Tekkit server. I'm going to LOL watching them try to industrialize while abiding to these rules. Good job on the idea.
I think the best part about this challenge is the fact that what made it possible was 1.8. Before that point, you'd be very hard-pressed to get all the fancy materials, but now it's actually fun and possible to advance in!
Good luck trying to get to the End, though
Lol I guess that's the only thing good about 1.8. Personally I'm not a fan of what Mojang has been doing with Minecraft lately.
We haven't ever gotten to the End pre-challenge. Not sure if we can do it with these new restrictions...
I'm trying this challenge. Oh yeah, I have a mod called Mo' Mobs and Ores so I killed a badnit with a piece of wood, and he dropped 2 STONE swords, plus a lot of xp points. It took about 25 hits to kill him. Also, this seed is a good one for this challenge. The seed is awesomesauseissolegitftwbro. Long, but there's a village with a crop field and the blacksmith's chest has an iron pickaxe, 3 diamonds, and 3 apples. You can make a diaond pickaxe with your diamonds and 2 sticks!

That squealing sound you hear is the thread derailing.
I'd like a "Destroy the Planet" challenge too. Or "Industrialize the Planet".

Then Al Gore is going to pay you a visit later. And not a friendly one. jk
Maybe do everything listed, but in reverse?
