Right now I'm working on building a flying city for my RP server.
It'll be a modern asian style, floating over a mideval castle city. Outside the castle will be a second part called the Undercroft, where the poor and refugees live. It's based off of the floting city in FinalFantasy XII, and will have a rail system that spans hundreds of blocks in four directions. I've only just started on it, but I'll try to post some images later on how it turns out.

Oh minecraft. Why must I always return to your plentiful bosom?
there is one thing i havent really seen people doing, and thats making odd angles by making use of the stairs and slabs.
by using a combination of stairs, slabs, and regualr blocks, you can make some cool entry ways to large buildings. usually, i like to use steps that are 1 1/2 blocks long, 2 1/2, 3 1/2, ect.

Give me an internet, or Chuck Norris will kill you!!!
Can anyone help me make my house look nicer, I got too focused on the interior, and a lighting system, that i compleatly forgot about the outside.
Ill post pics or a download link if anyone wants to help
Better exterior lighting to light up the outside, flowers, grass, and trees help with a natural look. You could also add fountains, small ponds. Make sculptures or other random tidbts to spruce up the place. you could also add terraces to the ground, or make the ground a different materials such as a stone courtyard? Possibilities are endless :happy.gif: Upload a picture so I can help out more accurately :smile.gif:
Ok, here is a link to my house, Its been a 100% legit project except that i used mcedit to dellete some 1.7 chunks with this 1.8.1 update http://imgur.com/a/z5fg5#rp0Zq
If you need it, i would be wiling to upload the world data
Most, if not, all the glowstone you see can be retracted, so lighting isnt a problem, what i dont know what to do is on the outside, since its showing bookcase blocks...

Make the glowstone into light posts :smile.gif: Use fences and place glowstone atop, make the pathways wider, you could add something in the front yard, like a fountain. Put a wall over those bookcases :tongue.gif: I see you used glass and wood a lot. Use logs on the trim of your house to accent the wood walls. You could also trim the windows. I absolutely love the house by the way! :happy.gif:
You see, im keeping the glowstone on the ground, with the press of a button it all "disapears." Also, how shulould i make the wall over the bookcases and the wall of the second floor that looks good in both the inside and the outside.I would prefer not to use wood though, I feel like ive been using too much of it... I do like your idea of a wider path that connects to the windmill. and what do you mean my "trimming the windows" Use glass pannels instead?
The less flamible blocks on the outside, the better. Use half blocks to make full wood blocks on the outside, you're less likely to get owned by fire.
Also, the glowstone should be put under a layer of glass, but still be retractable. It adds a smoother feel.
Maybe add some hedges by putting logs in theground, then using shears to cut leaves and put them on the logs.

I've seen people use fence posts for shrubs, like little skinny trees :happy.gif: Also, to make the outside look better? Maybe remake the walls with a different material? Should I add an exterior aesthetics list guys?
Any advice on interior lighting, I've got a sandstone castle the central rooms are 80x80x20, I'd quite like to keep it as roomy as possible, I've got a glowstone rim around the edge of the ceiling accented with a half block just underneath and fence torches dotted just above the windows I'd quite like a big chandelier, but the amount of light needs to be enough to stop mobs from spawning.
Could raising the floor a couple of blocks and placing glowstone/torch/pumpkins under a wool carpet produce enough ambient light through the floor to allow for a chandelier centre piece?
No. But placing torches in alcoves would be a nice way to prevent spawning. Maybe put glass over the wool? Mobs can't spawn on glass.

Sounds like an empty room ._. You could make patterns in the floor with glowstone? :happy.gif:
Thought about a glass floor, but glass looks horrible if there's too much of it. Have all my alcoves covered, they all have windows and so each window has a torch, but the central area is in total darkness and automatically spawns 20 mobs if I remove all the temporary torches, not good for when my guests are dining :smile.gif:
Yes, it is currently an empty room, my largest build so far, I've only just finished the exterior, so I'm now looking to decorate, the largest room will be my medieval dinning hall, with a throne and a large ring table surrounded by seats, the table will have lights, but the room is still too large.
A glowstone floor could work, but I, I don't know, I'm looking for something a little different.
Dude, that looks pretty amazing from what I've got in my head :ohmy.gif: Mind uploading a picture? :happy.gif: A chandelier sounds like it would fit perfect, could be a lot of work and adjustments to make it all work together. I'd love to see what you've got so far :happy.gif:
Never forget that you can use redstone equipment as decorations. Trapdoors make excellent siding for blocks with unattractive sides or that just don't fit in.
What are you Death the Kid? Just kidding, but seriously, try a huge fountain or a centerpiece of some sort. A huge statue of yourself maybe? If your looking to light it up a glowstone pattern in the floor would match with the sandstone floor, just not too much. If you don't mind I'd like a download of the save for this, this is amazing :happy.gif:

I just got back froma marathon of Soul.
Don'tthink he got the reference though, shame.
And yeah, a floor to ceiling fountain would fit perfectly. Make sure it's symetrical!
