Wow!!! I love the idea for a capital building, it looks great. Circles (If built right) can really make something look good because it contrast the blockiness of Minecraft. That "Horizon Base" looks like it came from the future :ohmy.gif: You guys have inspired me to make something significant. I'll get to work on that when I get back from school :tongue.gif:
Does it seem to anybody else that when we speak of minecraft architecture, we are really just replicating real world architecture. Real world structures require proper support because of gravity and other laws, but within the minecraft universe, these laws to not apply (at least to most blocks).
With this in mind, were we true minecraft architects, would we not embrace the unique physics of the world rather than replicate what we see in this one? A real minecraft architect would create structures unique to that set of physical laws, their aesthetic would not be one of graceful support and natural curves, but floating structures and flat lines. We would not care about having supports to combat gravity, but would create structures unique to the minecraft framework, structures that would be impossible here, but in minecraft can be easily created.

Just a curious phenomena.
Thoughts?
Yeah that's me.
I like to go crazy with my buildings. They often end up looking like something from the future with anachronistic features. It slightly irks me when I'm on a multilayer server and everyone's house is medieval in style. Minecraft is in an ambiguous time period so I make buildings from all time periods. Unfortunately I only have pictures of some of the smaller structures I made on multi. They had to fit in a towny 10x10 plot so I didn't have the freedom to build the crazy structures I have in single player. If any of these structures were constructed in the real world they would surely fall over or be crushed under their own weight since most of them have levitating segments.

I love the way you build! Everything is so random, the little extra details you add make it look better. I'll add some of these things to the Aesthetics list.

Even though it looks random these buildings are still symmetrical. I noticed when I tried to make asymmetrical buildings of this style it looked like a pile of grief.

In my opinion, symmetry makes buildings look neater, more put together, and professional in general.
Personally, I tend to find symmetry to be boring. My latest map's buildings have been built with the desire to make separate structures meld into one another. For example, in the image I below, I have what remains of my original shelter (Which I will admit was fairly large) with various additions to it. I added a forge room that is placed on pylons over the ocean (for imaginary safety reasons), a Kitchen, and even a bedroom.
Of course the largest addition to my house would be the small, round, light house. All of my towers on this map have been made with a circular footprint because I had gotten so bored of the plain old square towers I used to build.
Here we have another image of my modest sea side shack, this time from the front. :smile.gif:
I just got the game today and I spawned in a valley between 4 mountains in the corners, I can see myself making a flying castle between the mountains, the only problem is it will probably look really bad as a first project

Everybody has to start somewhere. It may not look as good as it could if you had been building for a while, but theres no reason not to try. Indeed, by the very nature of minecraft, if it turns out badly, it's very easy recreate, modify, or destroy it.
This is the reason that the majority of people play minecraft in the first place. You have a raw power to create whatever you have the patience for, which for some people can be spectacular. Who hasn't wanted their own castle?
I still think that true minecraft architecture should embrace the physics though. If properly done, buildings that utilize levitating segments can look extremely nice.
Anybody ever tried sculpture in minecraft? maybe not like it is in the real world, but more abstract things. Like this, for example:
Its a small sculpture of a 3d uniform spanning tree. In simple terms, an inside out maze (passageways are solid and walls are air).
@Catachan That's a nice idea! (You still used a lot of symmetry :tongue.gif:) When I use symmetry I only use it for small things like, torches and aesthetics.
@thatrandomguy You got a good spawn :ohmy.gif: It will take awhile for you to get all the materials for that castle, but by then you'll have a decent concept of how its going to look so if you build it, we wanna see it!
@ChoadToad Sculptures? Hmm, Good idea I'll add that to the "Aesthetics" list. I'm going to try to build the one you just posted, I'll maybe add it into my castle courtyard :tongue.gif:
I'm actually starting on a castle in my new 1.8 survival >.< Wish me luck.
You guys are giving off tons of ideas and useful information, Thanks!!!
Well how I build stuff: I dont fear to test stuff, that sometimes feels ridiculous... But after I built it, it usually looks good, not ridiculous :biggrin.gif:
IMAGINATION, BRAVERY and TESTING :biggrin.gif:
That's a great idea, test world for all the stuff you guys put up! I could test all your ideas! :biggrin.gif: Thanks for the idea! (No pun intended)
NOTE: My library creation is officially on hold till a friend of my wife and I can get his SSI together and the three of us can be of the streets. Once, we are back in running order (food, a job, a second comp) I'll be starting back up on this creation. So at the moment I am on hold. However I AM doing some redstone circut + TNT creations at the moment and will post pictures when I can.Main reaon this is on hold is because the amount of time it will take to get exact realtime measurements downsized to a cubed model that I can effectively use in Minecraft will chew up a lot of my time. So I need to wait till I have certain life issues cleared up in order to give myself sufficient time to build this seven floor - two basement structure.I do ask that people remain patient while I settle lifes nuiances.
and T Man, about making a missle silo withito a steep and narrow mountain peak, complete with an opening silo door, a missle made of TNT and stone, and a full array of work offices, guard posts and secret entrances.
Hmm some very good points especially about how Minecraft we don't have the limitation of gravity. However does any one have any interior designs? There are plenty of exterior to inspire upon but the interior is rather limited. I would really like to fill up the other few levels in my extra large base.
I rather like it, bt otherwise, my buildings are as architecturally good as a brick
I can't wait to see! I'm still scoping out land on my survival world to build a castle.

Only a suggestion. :smile.gif:
Yes, Yes, Yes, could someone please host a server?! It would be awesome. With a whitelist, and bukkit plz. And World edit. :happy.gif:
