Hello, TMan here to help you out with a ton of tips and tricks, created by the community. I don't want to bore you with a long detailed paragraphed guide. So here are a bunch of tips to help you out, if you'd like I can post examples of your use of these tips, I'll post your projects, I'll add a link that you like.
Just ask, I'll always help the best I can! ~TMan
-Symmetry can help make your creations look more neat and tidy but not everything has to be symmetrical.
-It's easier if you know how or what you want to build so try and choose a theme to build around, like Defense, Luxury, Modern, Futuristic, Med-evil, ect.
-Before you start building know which blocks you will use, create a palette of blocks to build with as an artist chooses the paint they paint with. You should generally use about 3-5 blocks for the majority of the design.
-Despite Minecraft being a game of blocks, you can also build many different shapes.
-Location adds atmosphere, a wooden lodge just doesn't fit in a desert.
-If you make structures more than 1 block thick you can make a different interior material and also use a different exterior.
-You can use anything to build! Crafting benches, furnaces, even cake!
-Use blocks in any way possible, slabs can create windows, stairs can make chairs.
-Max out your space, bigger is better.
-Remember, your structure looks smaller from the inside.
-Exterior lighting is just as important as interior lighting.
-Diagonal builds and curves contrast the blockiness of Minecraft, its a neat effect!
Aesthetics (Touching up)
-Switch up your materials!
-Add in little details like flowers or trees, touch things up a bit.
-Put glowstone behind your paintings. They are translucent and appear much brighter and more vivid with glowstone behind them.
-Add frames around your windows. For example, if your walls are made of Planks, use raw wood to outline the windows.
One thing is to never use just one material for a building. Use dark and light colors to give the building some contrast, but don't use too many contrasting colors unless you want it to hurt your eyes when you look at it. And in Minecraft, bigger is usually better.
I add stuff that uses redstone, im pretty experienced with it. but im really bad hiding the circuit, so, most of the times, there is a ugly exposed circuit D=
I am a survival player yet I tend to be creative by using both my vast knowledge of actitectural design and an infinite imagination. I have built buildings from full sizerd Norse strongholds, to celtic castles, to underground cathedrals, to small-narrow mineshafts and much more. I may play Singleplayer 99% of my minecraft time but I try to be creative and random. My first creation I am looking at recreating in my new world is a rendition of the Denver Public Library (also known as Central Library in the state of Colorado.) I will post pics below of what we are looking at but it is the library I am currently within while posting this. This is an aerial view
These are views of the exterior and interior
I really hope this isn't too much in a single post, but this is my idea of arcitecture in minecraft.

That is going to be really hard, but if you can pull it off your amazing.
@Dante: Of course its okay, I'd love to see it being worked on. I'll post pictures of your progress on the main post.
@an1m9r: I've seen people use trapdoors as window shutters :biggrin.gif:
@Smartie: Ever since 1.8 all I've seen is complaints, bugs, and other nonsense forum topics. I wanted an active thread about building instead of all those topics :tongue.gif:
I also play single player a lot because I've got some slow internet :sad.gif: I'll see if I can upload a few pictures of some building ideas. Maybe an underground bio-dome with a lava sun?

Thank you Mr. T and btw there are about 20 people that go around denver's 16th street mall in groups of two with signs that read "FREE HUgS" lol nice avatar.

Thats what my avatar is haha, I gave the shirt away though. I really didn't have anything better to put as my avatar.
Color and contrast are so important. I hope Notch implements paint or dye so I can make different colored wood and stone.
There is tons and tons of good suggestions for the game, I wonder how many he actually has thoughts about adding. Colored wood and stone is a good idea, I'm sure there is a mod for it :ohmy.gif:
I'm working on an underground place at the moment, pictures soon.
T man, what's your texture pack? Oh btw, yeah I love the water elevator, looks great :smile.gif:
Thanks! The texture pack is called "JohnSmith" I believe, it's only 32x32 and it looks amazing!
The water elevator is faster than ladders, just alternate signs and water. Hold down space and you get an extra boost from jumping out of water right into the next :tongue.gif:
Alas, my brain child. Six month of work in the making and still not complete. I'll admit I slacked off for a few month but here it is:
Horizon Base
Don't worry, it is of practical use. See the things that look like starships for those of you that watch too much Stargate? Yeah, that's actually minecart train lines. I programmed 20 pickable destinations and currently a work in progress, all top-of-the-line wiring I promise you. I got about two floors out of six done. One of which is the Grand Library which you can see the light coming out of the windows on fourth floor. I actually made this first to be a minecart hub since my things are way too spread out in this world (For those of you interested in TNT cannons, this is a premade cannon testing map).
Below is another picture of a enterance (4 in total). The letters stand for Port North
Its got a nice combination of ice and snow blocks if I do say so myself. I am looking from the balcony with the enterance directly below me.
Just ask, I'll always help the best I can!

General Tips
-If you don't know what to build, pull up some images from google to inspire you.
-Texture Packs to your liking can improve the way things look a lot! My personal favorite Summerfields.
-Remember, you don't have to go for realism, let your imagination run wild onto Minecraft.
-Minecraft is YOUR world, do anything you want, you have everything you need, the tools and the materials, do anything you dream of.
-There aren't any physics in Minecraft, so don't hold back when building your creations!
-Planning out your build makes it really easy and well put together in the end.
-The "Golden" Ratio.
-Symmetry can help make your creations look more neat and tidy but not everything has to be symmetrical.

Which leads to the water tunnel...
After you get out of the water tunnel you are lead into the main room (Lava Light :smile.gif:)
Two more pictures of the main room.
I tried to use different materials that go well together, what do you guys think?
