Hey guys, me and a few mates are re-creating Gringotts bank from Harry Potter on our server. At the moment, we are mainly throwing ideas around, and because Bukkit are slacking and haven't updated we've just been messing around on single player experimenting with ideas.
The main design for the building is going to be fairly linear with a look much like that in Harry Potter 7 Pt2, with the desks where the goblins were sat. The original look of Gringotts from pictures of The Philosopher's Stone (or Sorcerer's, you silly Americans) is fairly lame in our opinions, and leaves little room for interpretation. So far the basis of the front is an arched doorway approximately 15 blocks wide and 25 tall (of course, subject to change) a large amount of space on both sides for some nice architectural design, and two towers to form the corners. The corners will obviously be duplicated at the back, and will have a golden ball on top of them.
The real meat, however, comes from the underground mine-cart system that will link to the vaults. The plan is for myself to WorldEdit out an enourmous portion of the ground, fill the bottom with some great terrain (lava, plateaus, huge holes, the lot) and have the mine-cart system weaving to each of the vaults. The vaults are using a 3x3 piston door which will be a little delayed for the 'movie style' effect where the door slowly opens.
As much as I would love to invite many people to help me with this, I can't have too many people on my server. It's posted on this forums because ...
A: We're doing it offline in creative mode at the moment :tongue.gif: and
B: I'd love to see some of the amazing ideas that you guys can come up with. We have 2 guys working specifically on design of the buildings and the architecture, working in close liaison with me as the redstoner.
So, creative forums, hit me!

Could I help? I have skype and all. I'm a really good creative builder trust me, I understand if you say no so be honest.
As much as I would love to say yes to every and all amazing and talented builders, I'd prefer it just to keep it between my friends as it's so much easier to manage. However, if you really were interested in helping, you could perhaps do some awesome design schematics on your world and see if you can inspire us, and of course we would credit you!
Of course, I don't expect you in anyway to do that, it's completely up to you. And again, sorry about having to decline your direct help >_<

If you can't strive for perfection, what can you strive for?
It's my white-listed server so having the IP isn't that helpful to you. Basically it's white-listed because it's a 1GB RAM server and because we're in Australia web hosting space is ridiculously expensive, $40 a month for the server. If it were cheaper, or we had more RAM, I would un-white-list it and let more people on.
For now, unfortunately, pictures may have to suffice. I'll try to update whenever we get something significant to give you guys some eye candy :smile.gif:

When I go on to single player after a while it all goes white
Does any1know whats happening and is there any way of fixing it
plz tell me
Fosure you should be asking about this somewhere else, but in any case i would reccomend forcing update (if you have the advanced client) or if you dont have the new client, going to minecraft.net and just downloading a new minecraft (transfering and backing up all your saves first ofcourse) and running that.

"I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life's realities." Dr. Seuss
It's going to be extremly hard to re-create Gringotts because of how the buidling is designed. For example the 3 story collums in-front of the bank are built at a lean, and to give it wouldn't look proper if it wasn't at a lean. But the best of luck and post picture's as soon as possible please!

Yeah if you didn't gather from my initial description, the building itself is going to be our interpretation of Gringotts. Tbh, what you can glean from the movies (very little) isn't all that enticing so we're recreating the inside hall with a fairly high accuracy but the outside with our own initiative, though of course that's subject to change. The underground is impossible to re-create, as there's never enough shown, so we're using what we've seen, what we know, and what we want to do!
@Miky24; As Manganum put it, of course we're using minecarts you numpty, there is nothing else in minecraft that could even closely resemble the... transportation system in Gringotts in the movies.
Quick update; I've managed to get a decent 3x3 piston door going, which I'm fairly pleased with, and for it's compact-ness (if that's a word), I've only got the top of a piston to show for it. Also designed a minecart station that on the press of a button shoots off the minecarts, and also allows them to come back into individual bays. Not too complicated, but of course sometimes the simplest ideas are the most effective :smile.gif:
^Just a quick screenie of how big the circuit is, remember this is going to be used many times so a balance between efficiency and awesome is key. Any ideas or improvements highly appreciated :smile.gif:

If you can't strive for perfection, what can you strive for?
So, I'm one of the other guys working on the Gringotts bank. We've been doing the desinging and prototyping for about 5 days now. Im the lead designer I guess you could say and we are most definantly not going for 100% accuracy from movies or books. I'll say it again for all the people who are a few fries short of a happy meal, WE ARE NOT AIMING FOR 100% ACCURACY.
Continuing on though. The design for the Vaults and the Vault entrences (where the minecart pulls in) is made to be as, rustic, I guess you could call it, as possible. By rustic, I mean, Wizardy-y as possible. So with the addition of 1.8, we have those nifty new stone blocks, which is exactly what I'm looking for.
Now, I know when I download a custom map to explore around, I hate having to spend an additional 2-4 minutes downloading a damned texture-pack that doesn't even include all the block types. So, my plan at the moment is to go with the default tetxure pack.
If anyone is willing to make a texture pack though, that would be greatly appreciated, and there might even be a little something in it for you, if you do a good job.
So far, we I've made the Vault entrance and the Vault itself. These are only prototypes though, so don't get all shitty with me sayin' that "That block is out of place" and "That torch is only flickering half as much as it should be," cause to me, all you're sayin' is that you think you could do a better job. In which case, I urge you to tell us where we've gone wrong and give us the most detailed amount of advice possible.
i would help.you seem australian like me. i have watched harry potter and the deathly hallows part 1 and 2 i know what you meen about the rail way system it would be hard
This sounds really good. I hope you get the sever up soon. Also, here's a suggestion, why don't you guys make a timelapse/update videos on the project? I would love to see that.
- BlackMageMario
That sounds like a fantastic idea! I don't think we could do it for the whole thing but for building the front of the bank or something, that could easily be done with time lapse. Thanks for the idea :smile.gif:

Thanks for the great idea! :biggrin.gif: I think that that would be pretty cool, especially with the lobby and all. I didn't metion the lobby before, so i will now. The lobby, where the goblins sit is 36x50, although, that too is subject to change. You guys remember the part in HPp7 where they kill all the goblins in the bank. Notice how the building was particularly white? Yeah, thats what im going for. So the premninant block type there will probably be the Iron block. The bank in HPp7 was actually quite small. So going 36x50 will give it the sence of grandeur that was displayed in the Philosopher's Stone (Sorcerer's Stone for you special little Americans), well, I hope.
Course, this could all go to hell, but lets hope that doesn't happen.
But a few design features that im looking for in the lobby are "Chandeliers" at the top of the building and maybe some neat table system going with stools for the goblins. The tables being a fence and pressure plate, but im unsure how to create chandeliers or stools. I can create seats just with stairs and fences but i dont think that will give the desired effect.
Soooooo... I havn't actually started making it cause 'world edit' would make it much easier, and thats not out for 1.8.1 yet, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, we will keep you posted and once I start building the lobby I will take screenshots for the montage!

Because they don't have the stuff to make a decent server, they probably don't have the stuff to record at a decent FPS.
Nice update here guys, and an outcry for some advice! This is where you guys come in, we're just working on the front of the building and want to know what you think the front should look like, as we're stumped for ideas.
Here's the current WIP:
Note that it's obviously not going to be identical to Gringotts, especially the outside. If we end up straying too far away we may just name it 'An Awesome Bank' or something else. I do have floating glowstone inside for lighting, though! =D
So, architectual design for the front of the building, go!

Firstly, define 'decent'. For us, hosting 5 - 10 people on a server is perfectly adequate, and yes I have Fraps. Please don't assume.
