As part of a continuing series, I am creating step-by-step instructions for building structures in minecraft.
Lego has perfected a very simple, language independent instruction method for assembling complex objects. I wanted to try to emulate their instruction style with a simple cabin build (though I'm also adding text comments here). You can see the whole build on my flickr here.
This is the cabin we will be building. Very simple and square.
First, the parts list:
I marked the corners of the building with red flowers, and added monochrome rulers to make it easy to judge the size (5x5).
Next, lay the foundation. Cobble to hold the walls, planks for the floor.
The first layer of walls. Logs anchor the corners. A wooden switchplate sits on the floor behind the door between the bookshelf and the chest.
Adding the second layer of walls includes glass and the placement of the sole torch. Because of the size, one torch does a fine job at night.
A view of the partially completed roof. A combination of half-step wood blocks and wooden stairs give the roof some peakedness.
Once again, the completed build.

The squareness of the building is admittedly bland, but does allow for expansions. For instance, to add a veg garden, just add a door between the crafting bench and chest and some fences:
Additional rooms can be added in the same way. A basement could be added, but one block of floor would be lost to a ladder.

Wow, I was literally JUST about to do this :tongue.gif:
Looks kinda nice, although very very small. The cabin I was going to show was a 7x8/9 log/wool cabin. It's pretty decent :smile.gif:

See how that bed is right next to the outer wall, and the wall is only 1 block thick? That is an unsafe bed to sleep in.
For safe sleeping, either place the bed in the middle (you might need to upscale your house to keep it look good.
Or cover that wall up with a dirt hill so the wall becomes thicker.
Simple and lots of pictures. Maybe keep the monochrome ruler in more pictures for more functionality.
... Are you setting people up for more complex tutorials / step-by-steps?
I am considering more complicated tutorials, with more visually appealing buildings. This was as much a proof-of-concept as it was potentially valuable to beginners.

You raise a good point. The bed is not safe for sleeping because of the ease with which mobs can move within 3 blocks of your sleeping body (waking you and teleporting the mob next to you. I really like your idea of earthen walls alongside the bed to resolve the problem!
And thanks for the suggestion of the ruler. I will keep it in for future builds. Cheers!

i love how you make the tutorial, using layers and a lot of pictures :wink.gif:
Thanks! I was a lego fanatic as a kid. An example of the instructions style I'm mimicing can be seen here.
Any suggestions for future build tutorials?

Or just put a torch outside :wink.gif:
Monsters will come anyways, because they don't spawn 1 block to your wall :wink.gif: it's like they walk and go inside. It's pretty crazy, I guess this Cabin is for peaceful setttings.
Pretty cool. But lets say I add a second floor in order to have more chests and furnaces on the first. If I moved the bed onto the upper floor, would monsters still be able to get to it? Or is that only on the ground?

Everything I build is 100% legit. No mods, no tools, nothing but time and effort.

I am unsure about the relative safety of a first versus second floor bed. I may test this out and get back to you.
I am building a communitarian village out of mostly wood. This house is part of the village, and it somewhat close to a community forge, with 9 furnaces and a open netherrack flame. Certainly, you'd want to expand the crafting capacity of the home as your progressed through the game if you didn't have facilities nearby for large scale crafting and storage.

Another edit: I think a really like this building design!
Stables:
[snip]
I like the stables. I really like the porch. I would consider extending the wood logs on the corners of the cabin to the floor of planks you added to achieve height for the porch. That way there is some visual suggestion of the heavy duty wood bearing the weight of the roof.
I think I'll incorporate your stables into one of the homes in my village. Thanks!

The floor of the cabin or the porch? Also thank you for replying!

You are welcome!
The cabin has two levels of wood logs on the same levels as the door occupies. Below those logs (from the image you posted) there are wood planks at the level of the cabin floor. My suggestion is to replace the wood planks which are visible in the image immediately under the wood logs with more wood logs. That way, the wood logs appear to span the distance from the roof to the foundation.

You would have:
It's aesthetic and fussy, rather than crucial of course, but may be a visually beneficial edit.

Got it thanks! Changing it now. Also great job on the design I plan on having a long relationship with these buildings!
The front of my log cabin (When it started to rain, I thought in my mind ''Oh crap, lightning STAY AWAY!!!'' I was afraid it was gonna burn down my new house )
Side
Back
Work station and secret chest behind TV
Mine (work in progress)
Bed and TV (on the TV is the documentary ''Life of a Creeper'') On the right is part of my infinite water pool
My indoor farm (diamonds for cloth sky-pattern? lol)
And that's it! Thanks for checking this out guys! Hope you guys have good luck building your log cabins/houses and also hope they don't get struck by lightning :tongue.gif:
