Great thread! I'm actually in the midst of designing a city for an SMP server and you bring up some great points.
Here are some points that I've considered for my City that you may feel that is useful to add. c:
Some points to Consider for the list: Public Bath House (popular in Roman Times)
Arena
Sewer System
Tanner
Street Signs and Street lights: There are multiple designs for these and can help a lot with navigation!
Basic Town/City designs: Some people might want to create a city or a town but want to have some kind of design to follow. One of the most simple Town Planning Ideas is the Quadrant plan, Where you divide a square into 4 and the lines are the main roads out of the Town/city giving you exits at each of the cardinal points. A town Hall, Temple/Church, Town Square or Garden in the intersection of these points in teh middle of town would create a focal point or meeting area. The Quadrants created by these streets leading from the central area to the out gates could be divided into seperate areas such as Residential Quad or a Market Quad.
I really appreciate the work you put in this thread and hope you will continue to update more frequently.
I'd like to note how you kept the subject mostly open, as cities come in a variety of flavors and are not limited to the usual medieval or modern human settlements. My current goal in Minecraft is to make different varieties of towns and cities using as much of the surrounding enviornment as possible. A sand palace in the desert, a vast wooden city within a massive tree, the massive underground hideout of the molepeople, a literal hellhole industrial town in the Nether, and so on. A lot of the times I base what I build around RPing techniques- imagining the civilization that would settle in and trying to create a world based on their culture and beliefs. Sometimes the area I have to fill out is so vast its a struggle to come up with something to add to complete to it. But I've taken some of your suggested tips and its starting to help me get back on track. :3
Thanks for the replies. I have an update in mind that will be ready by the end of the week (a couple days from now). It will include many things posted in the thread, from structure ideas to answers for some questions (I'm going to keep you guys in the dark until it is released. Don't mind the Creepers ).
Sorry guys, it appears that destiny doesn't want this thread to be updated. First, when the update was on-time, I was just fixing up the images (they wouldn't show up) and then my computer got a virus and froze the internet (and when I re-opened the internet post-virus, the thread was reset). To iterate how far along I was with the update, I would have pressed the submit button for the updated if I didn't notice the images were being not-there.
Next, the following week (when the lateness would probably be tolerated), I had re-typed much of what was lost, and then a blackout hit (at which point I gave up and spent time playing Portal 2 and Minecraft).
Now that Easter's ending, I have time again to get an update out, no matter the obstacles
TL;DR: Destiny is hating on this thread (on my 3rd attempt for an update), but I'm determined to get an update out soon.
Got the new update out (without any issues). Couple stuff might be changed around before the next version update.
V2.0
-Added "City Designs" section
-Added "Detailing a City" sub-section under Advanced Architecture
-Added more to the buildings list
-Image layout changes (added/moved...etc)
Glad to hear this; that is why I created the thread.
Anyways, despite having neglected this thread since the Curse hosting switch (in which formatting went up and broke), I've updated the formatting and fixed some spelling/grammar errors (though I doubt I got them all). I also expanded a bit on The List. Find the tiny 3-point update in the Change Log.
I'm thinking on updating the OP again to include piston doors and such, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. What do you guys think? (Is expecting people to read and respond to this)
A great tip for building cities and towns is, This is minecraft, your buildings don't have to apply to the rules we use IRL, Let your creativity go nuts and build whatever flows into your mind.
I started this save 2 days ago, I haven't used any hacks or INVEdit. Completely vanilla Minecraft.
Well... Except for the giant diamond pickaxe floating in the sky. That was MCEdited in.
Hey man, just wondering what texture pack you're using there?
good job on this maybe ad some more ideas like pistons or how to build certain things to get people started.

I hope some of this helps someone anyways. c:
I may contribute this to the list: an amusement park :biggrin.gif:
I actually disagree heavily with this statement.
The Sun rises in the North! Now these points of data make a beautiful line...

I have a suggestion-
street lights do wonders to add to the design of a town. whether old or new town street lights can brighten up anyones day! =]
