Hey, sorry I didn't reply. I didn't have much idea how long each one takes me, but I made a point of paying attention with the most recent one. I've not done anything for the last couple of weeks, so I thought I'd better get back into it. The project is closer to the end than it is to the start, and I can't give up now!
So I've done the light cruiser SMS Rostock. Total time, including planning, building, taking screenshots and typing her up... maybe 3 hours? Bear in mind that she's an empty shell the same as the other ships here. Pretty much no interior at all. At a guess I'd say destroyers maybe an hour and a half, light cruisers about 3 and battleships... 5 or 6?
Anyway, here she is. She's Karlsruhe class. Only two were built, and SMS Karlsruhe exploded spontaneously in 1914, so Rostock was the only one left. She let the Torpedoboot flotillas at Jutland and so she was quite heavily involved in the fighting and screening of the battleships. During the night, she was disabled by a torpedo hit. Three of the Torpedoboots attempted to protect her and escort her to safety, but they ended up having to evacuate her crew and scuttle her when they encountered the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Dublin.
The British King George V class, which were effectively a slightly upgraded Orion class, and were followed by the Iron Dukes, which were an incremental upgrade again. I used my Iron Duke as a basis for the build, and the superstructure and turrets are largely the same. I had to redo the secondary armement casemates, alter the mast and funnels and shorten the ship.
I've got two separate models because King George V and Centurion were fitted with pole masts, while Audacious and Ajax were fitted with tripod masts. Audacious had already been sunk in 1914 when she hit a German mine, and despite the assistance of several ships she couldn't be saved. The ships that attempted to help her included the Titanic's sister RMS Olympic. Rather amusingly, the Admiralty tried to cover the sinking up despite the fact that a massive ocean liner full of passengers saw Audacious go down.
The surviving three ships fought at Jutland. They fired a few salvoes at the leading German battlecruisers but didn't score any recorded hits. They didn't take any damage either.
King George V and Ajax were scrapped in the mid-1920s, while Centurion was converted to a target ship. She was still afloat during World War II and was at one point mocked up into a dummy version of the new battleship HMS Anson (of a newer class also named after King George V). She was eventually sunk deliberately off Normandy in 1944 as a breakwater for the Mulberry harbours. The German shore gunners thought that they had sunk her with great loss of life because only 70 sailors escaped the sinking ship. In truth, the 70 men were her entire crew.
I've got two separate models. The one with a pole mast represents King George V and Centurion, while the one with the tripod mast represents Ajax.
These new ships mean that my total count now stands at 150/249.

And another one. I couldn't help but finish off the Royal Navy's 13.5" Super Dreadnought designs. The last one I needed to do was HMS Erin (not counting the battlecruiser HMS Tiger!)
As a result, I've now done that entire set of battleships. The Orion, King George V and Iron Duke classes, plus HMS Canada and HMS Erin, all followed the same basic layout but they all differed slightly from one another.
Erin was originally ordered by the Ottoman Empire as Reşadiye and was based on on the KGVs, but with several modifications. The Royal Navy ships had limits on beam and draft so they could use the RN’s drydock facilities. Reşadiye did not need to meet these requirements, so she was built with slightly more beam and significantly shorter than the KGVs. As a result the design was a more stable gun platform, allowing an upgrade of the secondary armament to 6” and for the midships Q turret to be mounted one deck higher at forecastle level. She had a tripod mast with the legs pointing forward instead of the more usual aft, because this allowed the boat crane to be mounted on the mast. Because they didn’t need a boat crane between the funnels, the funnels could be placed much closer together. Finally, she was built with a plough bow rather than a ram bow, which helped her to cut through the water better.
She was virtually complete at the outbreak of WWI, but since the Ottoman Empire was viewed as a hostile nation, the First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill ordered that Reşadiye should be seized for use by the Royal Navy. She was taken into British service as HMS Erin. They also seized Sultan Osman-ı Evvel which was in a similar nearly-finished state (which became HMS Agincourt).
At Jutland, Erin fought in the 2nd Battle Squadron 1st Division with the 3 surviving King George V class ships. They were the furthest ships from the German Fleet once the Grand Fleet deployed for battle and as a result were hardly engaged. Erin herself was right at the far end, and didn’t even fire her armament during the battle.
In the early 1920s, she was planned to be retained as a training ship after the Washington Naval Treaty, but that role went to Thunderer instead and Erin was sold for scrap.
History is my favorite subject and not knowing much about WWI aside from the basics and a little bit of obscure knowledge, this will definitely add some diversity to my library of so-called "useless knowledge", as my classmates would call.
Amazing builds, this is what Minecraft is about, using your imagination, not using a teenager skin and going on Mineplex.
Keep up the good work. Lesson for all of you: "Those who fail to learn their history, are doomed to repeat it." This is why history is the most important subject hands down.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate reactions like that!
There will be a download eventually when the entire project is finished. At this point, I'm wondering if I can get it finished in the next couple of months and release on the 99th anniversary of the battle. That would be pretty cool if I manage it.
Please unequip that crappy shader. I would like to see these ships under classic Minecraft textures and shading.
Hey, I like the shader! But I've taken a few quick screenshots without it anyway, since you asked. I loaded up my ocean map and the nearest ships to me were Erin and Agincourt. I've taken a screenshot of each with my preferred textures, and also a screenshot of each in default. Screenshots in the spoiler.

New M class destroyers and Duke of Edinburgh class armoured cruiser.
The M class were the newest British destroyers at the time of the battle, and because of this they formed the bulk of the destroyer forces. There were a total of 37 of the Admiralty design (Nestor in the screenshot) and 4 Yarrow specials (Moon in the screenshot). The class as a whole was very similar to the preceding L class, so I built them by modifying my L class model. The most notable difference was that the M class had an extra shaft and more installed power. The Yarrow M class dropped the funnels and shafts down to two, yet they still managed to be faster. They also had a noticeably longer forecastle.
Of the M class, Nestor and Nomad were sunk. They were leading a torpedo attack against the German battlecruisers and became disabled. They were destroyed as the High Seas Fleet advanced towards them.
-------
The Duke of Edinburgh class armoured cruisers were launched in 1904, two ships in the class (Duke of Edinburgh and Black Prince). They were designed to fight with the battlefleet, so they were somewhat more heavily armoured than previous armoured cruisers. Both ships were part of the 1st Cruiser Squadron at Jutland. Duke of Edinburgh was the only ship out of 4 in the squadron to survive the battle. During the battle, she fired on the German II Scouting Group and particularly SMS Wiesbaden.
The rest of the fleet lost Black Prince when she came into contact with German forces in the late afternoon. Shortly afterwards, the remaining two ships in the squadron (Defence and Warrior) received heavy fire, causing Defence to blow up and severely damaging Warrior. The last contact with Black Prince was a wireless signal at 20:45. A British destroyer spotted a ship aflame with two widely spaced funnels at about midnight, and saw the ship explode. It was thought that it might have been Black Prince with the two central funnels shot away. The German account states that Black Prince briefly engaged the battleship Rheinland at about 23:35, before attacking the main body of the fleet at about midnight. She attempted to turn away, but was fixed in searchlights and destroyed by the combined point-blank fire of several battleships. There were no survivors.
----
My next build is the Warrior class armoured cruiser, which were a follow on to the Duke of Edinburghs. The main difference was that the secondary armament was upgraded to turrets at deck level, rather than embrasures below the main deck (that you can see on the above screenshot). The problem with these was that they were too close to the water and could only fire in calm seas. Other than this, the Warriors were very similar so I should be able to modify my Duke of Edinburgh class without too much difficulty.
Because there were so many M class destroyers, the count has surged up to 194/249! I've also started docking the ships along a jetty in the map that I'm planning on eventually releasing. This project is starting to come together.
I figure that's because the ships used the newer Yarrow (water tube) boilers - hence the name - in lieu of the standard Scotch (fire tube) boilers?
The name was because they were designed and built at Yarrrow & Company, much like the other builders special runs named after the shipyard (Hawthorn M class and Thornycroft M class), but you're right, they did use the Yarrow type boilers. I'm not sure which type the Admiralty design used - a quick web search hasn't given me the answer, but I wouldn't be surprised if you're right.
Still very interesting though, especially since the initial run of the Yarrow design were reported as having slightly less installed power but still produced the higher speed. The later ones increased the installed power above the Admiralty design, so those ones make more sense.
Also, I love that we're discussing century-old ship boiler and powerplant designs on a minecraft discusson board. Excellent!
However, I was wondering when you were going to start construction of the Queen Elizabeths.
I've been trying to build the Warspite in smp and it would be great to see one from who knows much more than me regarding to World War 1 era vessels
Additional note, designing the interior has been a bit problematic, as I have no idea how the layout of the ships of this era were designed. Got any helpful tips?

Thanks! I've been holding off on the Queen Elizabeths, as they're some of my favourite ships. I figured that I ought to save some really good ships for last. So at the moment, my plan for the run to the end of the project finishes with the sequence SMS Seydlitz, König class, Queen Elizabeth class and finally HMS Tiger. So it will be a little while before I get to them, but on the other hand I don't have a huge amount left to do, so I might get there sooner than I think.
As I said a couple of posts back, I've made a start putting these ships into a map that I'll eventually release for download. Here's a sneak preview of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Divisions of the Grand Fleet all smartly lined up...
Yep! I've got 146 out of 249 ships covered now. I reckon I've got about 20 or so ship classes still to do before I'm finished. One ship at a time...
