With the introduction of Red Nether Brick and the Nether Wart Block, it's become far more advantageous to have large quantities of nether wart on hand. Yet, it remains tedious to farm as it currently cannot be farmed automatically. One must either gather stack upon stacks at a time and subsequently spend a significant amount of time planting more, or gather very little at a time and repeat a shorter process over and over. It seems to me there's no reason Nether Wart should remain an item which cannot be automatically farmed. So, why not allow witches to do this for us?
There are two ways 4J or Mojang could implement this.
Option 1: A farmer villager would have to be converted into a witch via lightning strike and named; or
Option 2: Introduce a means of converting a witch into a villager, therefore allowing for a small chance that the witch would become a farmer.
Option 1 makes more "sense" in that being a witch could easily be construed as a permanent state rather than a curable condition. This is also the easier gameplay option as it would involve relatively few steps and/or repetitions. Should Option 1 be viewed as too easy for survival gameplay, however, Option 2 would significantly increase the effort involved in procuring a means to automatically farm Nether Wart. Players would need to seek out Witches, trap them, convert them, and repeat the process as many times as it takes. I fear, though, that this option will involve much more programming effort for the developers. Additionally, Options 1 and 2 could be made easier by allowing any brown coat villager to be utilized rather than restricting it to Farmers.
Let me me know what you think. Definitely (and especially) provide any critiques you come up with.
My thinking behind using Witches to farm the Nether Wart was that they brew potions and therefore already have a use for it. With this method there would also be no need to gather additional materials.
Do you foresee the black bonemeal being used in a nano crop farm?
