Gone are the good old days when I only had to enchant/quit/reload/enchant etc. 30 times to get the enchantments I wanted. Yes, the whole "1-3 levels spent" thing is great, but now there is no way (I have found) to reset the table for new enchantments when I don't want what is there. I actually have to waste lvls and now also Lapis Lazuli along with a random item just to reset the table, in hopes of getting something I actually want, which is about as likely as winning the lottery three consecutive times! I honestly thought it was not possible to make a worse system than was in place before, and they have proven me wrong!
Please just answer me this: What sort of half-brained enchanter would have no clue what enchantments they were putting on something? If they could choose the enchantments, why can't we? I know it is a question based on a fictional person, but the principle still applies. My rant is aimed specifically at single player survival modes, not pvp or creative.
But my real question is this I guess. Am I the only one that thinks this?
Yep, I've figured that much out, but how many steps does that add to an already annoying process? Has it ever been discussed (I'm new to Minecraft forums) creating a system where you select the enchantments you want, with a lvl price for each? Such a system would streamline the game and allow us to focus on the reason we play it, building things (again, I'm speaking specifically about single player survival). This system would be incredibly easy to draw up (I could do it, and Mojang is way smarter than me). Why are we stuck with randomness and wasting resources/lvls?
NO, it's great. You just need to cycle through armor/tool/weapon pieces then take the enchantment you want. Get 3 more levels and repeat. Worst case you do an enchantment on a stone tool and the table is reset.
No offense intended, but you actually didn't say anything I didn't say in my initial post. Check it yourself. Everything you said is exactly my complaint.
so you're upset that they patched / fixed a cheat?
why don't you just play in creative? that way you don't have to waste your time enchanting items or mining to get resources and can concentrate on building things.
to answer your question, no I'm not upset about the new enchanting but i like a challenge, that's why i play survival, hard. for those that don't there's other game modes and difficulty settings, problem solved.

I agree with the others - the new system is definitely better. It has its annoyances at times when the table is stubborn but just save and then enchant a couple wooden swords until you get what you need/want on your main one, reloading if you don't get it within the first 2 wooden one level enchant table resets. Works pretty well for me and I can do all that with way fewer levels than one save/enchant/reload/enchant process from before.
That said, they could just assign various enchantments set level amounts and let you pick what you want like some have suggested. I don't know though, this setup doesn't seem that bad really.
Plus I'm really grateful anvils are better now. I'd rather maintain great items I like than worry about the enchantment process anyway.

Yeah, I like it as well. Besides, the time to have had this discussion/prepare would'be been when the PC released it's version 1.8 -- many, many, many, many months ago during their snapshots -- not now.
I like it, too. I used to have to spend so many levels to enchant one item. Now I can enchant several items for the same amount of levels, the lapis cost isn't high, and I can see at least one enchantment that I'll get.
Like spurscar said, you can still do the enchant/quit/reload thing if you want.
As for choosing enchantments, I do think that could be great.

It's because you're not shopping... you're enchanting as part of a GAME... one that actually focuses on being a little annoying (i.e. making it a little difficult to get exactly what you want). If you want to focus solely on building things... the option is there... it's called "creative mode." If you want to focus on playing the "survival game" the way Mojang designed their game to be played (i.e. vanilla), you accept the little things they've done to "annoy" the player as just part of the game. If you want to play a different game designed by someone other than Mojang... play a modded game on PC or play a different game entirely. If you just want ease and efficiency in life... best not to play games at all.
I cant stand this new enchantment way, cause it wount let me enchants lower lvl enchants, so i need 8 9 0r 30 xp points to enhants my gear, so what if i just want to use 3 xp points on a iron armor and only need a protection 1. To bad you cant do that anymore.. im like this this guy, i play singleplayer survial and i love building and exploring.
Also i play on xbox one, and its not connected to my pc, cause i like to seperate thouse two. i pay my own bills, and the electric bill is lower that way.
But my point is, if you use and update, ask the people who play minecraft, as it is intended on xbox. if they like this, cause i sure dont. and most i talked to, who play singleplayer, dont, but the people i know who play pvp or creative love it,. but who cares as the xp points or use of it, is defrent, in pvp or creative mode.
its easyier on a pc, cause i can remove the mods i dont like, or reverse the update to a version i want, but i cant do that on a xbox..
So for me, i agree this new enchant way sucks, i dident like on pc, but i removed it, and dont like it on my console, but i cant remove it
I play single-player survival (mostly) and otherwise play survival with another player on local splitscreen (Xbox 360 until after today - Just got an Xbox One for Xmas)... and I love this new enchanting system. The "exit without saving" cheat was really annoying if playing with anyone else on local splitscreen.
Using up 1 level and 1 lapis to reset the table isn't that big a deal. If you don't want to chance a diamond tool or diamond armor on a 30-Level enchant that will cost you only 3 levels and 3 lapis, then enchant a book instead... Then use only the "good" books on your diamond stuff (it will cost you more in the long run, but you will get only the enchants you want on your diamond stuff). If you want to economize on XP, then just take a shot using iron stuff (with iron golems, iron is as infinite as XP). The reality is the most XP was/is wasted by people hoarding it above Level 30, since leveling up is exponential by design. Leveling up from Level 30 to Level 31 will cost you way more in XP than enchanting a 1 Level stone tool to reset the table... and at Level 1, you have a 100% chance of improving that tool in some way (either with Efficiency I or Unbreaking I). The "exit without saving" cheat was really annoying if playing with anyone else on local splitscreen.

why can't you?
you can get any level enchantment you want, just remove bookcases or place a torch/block between the bookcases and the table, just like you could in the previous version.
yeah, the new way is dumb. i still cannot get the enchantments i want. i cannot simply exit without saving until i get a sword with sharpness, unbreaking and looting. the xbox one controller just might find its way into my 60in samsung tv. i would love to play my game but it just doesnt work now. this is the stupidest thing ever. if they wanted to improve enchanting, just let us pick the tool we want. all they did was make it more frustrating. i still cannot figure out what it is going to take to get a sword with the above mentioned enchantments. anyone know how to get this to work? every time i put a sword in the table i get the same choices. iron sword always gets smite, untbreak and bane. those choices suck. how can i get my iron sword enchanted with unbreak, loot and sharp, anyone?
they really pissed me off this time, stupid micorsoft, makes me wanna buy something apple.......

Microsoft had nothing to do with this. Mojang set up this type of enchanting on the PC BEFORE they were bought by Microsoft. All you need to do is enchant something expendable (like a book) at a low level (which will cost you 1 Level of XP and 1 Lapis). This resets the enchanting table so that it will offer you something different on your sword. Also, by enchanting books, you can later use them at an anvil to "compile" the multpile enchantments you want on specific items.
yeah, thats my whole point. it doesnt take more resources, but it takes more hair pulling and time. it is definitely more problems. you did explain more about how we can make it work for us, but it still sucks. i cant just take a tool and enchant it, i have to further play with it just to get what i want. this is a step back and not an improvement.
so to get what i want i need to bring books and other items to get rid of unwanted enchantments to finely reach what i want. seems that it was working better before. what a bucket of ****...
I honestly don't understand why people are complaining about this...so you have to press a button a few extra times each reload to reset the table. It is the same randomness of enchants. They didn't change the percentages as far as I know. Now you don't have to spend all the extra time getting back to level 30 to enchant your next item which was/is a pain considering the mob cap on xbox. IMO the system is vastly improved. Imagine if the save/quit/reload option wasn't an option. People would be begging for this change.
Once you get into the rotation of going through the menus to save/quit/reload it is literally like 20s (for me at least) to enter, reset the table, enchant my item, quit and then rinse/repeat.
So glad they changed this. Now I can make multiple pickaxes in one sitting much faster instead of having to return each time my pick breaks/can't be repaired, grind the mob farm to level 30 and then sit there and do the quit/reload.
At the heart of my complaint is the randomness itself. I would greatly prefer to go to the enchanting table and enchant a tool/weapon the way I want it, then move on to actually playing the game, instead of having to enchant/reload/enchant until I finally get what I need. Even worse than that is the idea of having to waste exp, lapis lazuli, and levels to perform worthless enchantments in the hopes that the next one up will be what I want. I have wasted literal hours over the course of my time playing Minecraft just chasing the enchantments I need (i.e. silk touch, fortune III, unbreakable, etc.). Okay, so I don't have to go chase 30 levels anymore (Actually, I do, since you still need level 30 to get the "Best" enchantment). small consolation considering I now have to chase lapis and exp (you spend exp every time you enchant, and have to get those levels back before trying again).
The purpose of this thread was to find out if I was the only one that would prefer the ability to simply choose your enchantments from a list rather than using some random algorithm. If there are others, I will leave a suggestion on the appropriate forum. If not, I will suffer in silence.
Finally, I want to say this again, since it seems to have been missed by some. I am speaking specifically about single-player survival mode, not anything to do with online or creative modes.
so you're upset that they patched / fixed a cheat?

What if, like you, I like the challenge as well? I play survival for a reason. Granted, I do much of my building in peaceful mode, but I play in various modes. I enjoy the challenge of having to obtain the materials I need as well. I fail to see how your answer solves anything, considering in one sentence you tell me to just play in creative, and then sum up with a sentence speaking largely of survival modes.

I love the new enchanting system. Big improvement for how I play.
Once you get everything you need it's awesome. I fixed the best picaxe in the anvil for 3 levels. I love it.
