And get horribly lost while spending an eternity looking for things you will never find! I bet you replied without reading a single part of this thread! Was that seriously your first post?! It's that type of ignorant response that makes me hate the idea of infinite worlds even more!
Why not writing down the co-ordinates (X,Y,Z) that's really important for you before you get lost?
Really? It's because the size of the world has never been about the size of the world on the Xbox 360... it's about how the game goes about loading the chunks into memory.
To create an "infinite" option as you suggest, the entire manner in which the chunks load would have to be changed. They made the decision to limit the size of the world so that they could 1) keep the framerates up despite a lack of RAM and, to a lesser extent, processing power available on the Xbox 360; and 2) the size of the game save files down so that the game could still be played on any of the Xbox 360s out there (i.e. the ones without hard drives). Doing the chunk loading the way they did meant that the world cannot be any larger on the 360 than it currently is. I believe the 4J rep stated this precisely at Minecon 2012 when he said something like "it's not like we have spare memory kicking around." Changing the way the game manages chunk loading now is a major deal and it would probably result in significant'y poorer game performance on the Xbox 360. Therefore, they are unlikely to change it EVER on the Xbox 360.
It might indeed be changed on the Xbox One because the hardware has far more capability all the way around to handle the performance "hit" when uploading and downloading chunks continuously.
Seriously, we're not talking about the 360 version! That's also like the 3rd time someone felt the need to explain the chunk loading mechanics. We get it!
I have an idea, why can't 4J make an option that lets users select when creating a world whether they want the worlds size ranging from (Small, Medium, Large, Very Large, and then Infinite)? Like the next pocket edition update 0.9.0? So no one will ever complain about anything in that subject.
* If your base is way away from your spawn point, a compass is useless.
* Maps only show you what's around you- they don't tell you which way to go or how (or if) they're connected to your other maps.
* I headed out in the 4 compass directions and when I could barely see the other beacon, erected another. I did this for about a dozen beacons, in all directions. But as you go further out and lose sight of them, get turned around by checking caves you find, etc., you can move further away from your beacons without knowing it. Also as you move further out your 'beacon trail to home' there's only one 'zone' that you can see that last beacon from. Miss that 'zone' and you can get lost.
So yes, getting lost is easier than you think. That's why I suggested:
1- Make your base at or near your spawn point. Then that compass will actually work as you'd like. (Sheesh, after all this time, why haven't they changed the compass so it points to your last sleeping point?)
2- If you decide not to build near the spawn point, write down your base coordinates.
I suspect that 99.999% of us have used only 1% of an 'infinite' world- that's 30K blocks- almost 35 times the size we have now. How would that size be "holding you back"? If you can't build or find enough resources within that size.... well, let's just say you need to get out more. Note that would still leave you with 99% that world totally unused and wasted. Infinite worlds are purely a state of mind- not a necessity, and they're certainly not even begun to be all used.
Would an 'infinite' world be nice (if they could do it without it "costing" anything)? Sure, why not.
But I don't understand the uproar over the world size restriction.
If you're worried about running out of resources, why aren't you screaming for increasing the depth?
Okay Geneo, most people who want infinite worlds I would assume don't want it because there's not enough space to build or not enough resources, but rather seeing new terrain and exploring is something they enjoy about minecraft. Some people look at minecraft like 3D legos, others like the survival and technical side (redstone contraptions, exploring, minecraft physics, etc...). Personally, I can feel like building a huge castle at times, and at others I simply like to go exploring and find a cave that looks interesting. Sometimes there is no reason or objective to exploring, exploring just to explore, some people can't understand that at all. Why do something if there isn't a benefit from it? Its just like when you play basketball or go biking with your friends, you're not there to achieve something, you're there to have fun, which is the achievement in a way. I have never even come close to taking up the entire 360 world size, and I've only had 3 worlds since release. The 360 world size is perfectly fine for builders, but not for people who like the other stuff.

Then why worry/insist that everything be in one world? Infinite new worlds to explore are always just a click away... create a new one, pretend you're on a whole new planet. Enjoy playing the game and fighting the mobs while collecting resources from scratch (which is when it's most challenging/exciting/fun). IT"S ALL JUST PIXELS. Oh, and BTW, you do accomplish something far more valuable than pixel diamonds if you go biking with friends... good health, for instance.
Oh, I get the 'it's fun exploring' part- that's how I got lost.
But I also realized that an 'infinite' world is made up of biomes- which just repeat.
Desert>grassland>forests>jungles>mountains>jungles>forests>grassland>desert, etc. etc. Yes, there's the occasional waterfall, lava pit, cave, etc., but basically it's the same ole things over and over. If you've seen one desert, you've seen them all.
All I'm saying is the vast majority of an infinite world will never be used or explored. May give you that warm, fuzzy blanket feeling, but is it needed? Is just wandering around gawking at the scenery playing minecraft?
Don't get me wrong- I'm not against infinite worlds. I just don't see the 'Holy Grail' attitude that some people have about it. They're overkill, to me.

Yah its the same thing over and over again i remember how fun was it to explore before TU5(A.K.A the update that made the world boring)-also i am not against the current terrain whatsoever
Yup, no infinite worlds, but thats totally fine. Theyre saying a lot bigger so I'm assuming its going to be more than enough to satisfy everyone. And yes geneo, exploring is definitely not fun for you ("you" would be italicized, but i'm on ipad so dont know how to do that). But in any case I see where you're coming from now; you don't have anything against infinite worlds, you just don't see why people consider it a necessity and make it out to be the single most appealing thing about minecraft. And I don't have a single problem with that. Kinda thought you were saying infinite worlds would be a negative.
Looks like Owen Hill got a little ahead of himself when he said the PS4 would "definitely" have infinite worlds. Since 4J didn't really speak about any other features to come, it's likely that their response was put out there to correct his statement.
I can see where their concern is regarding infinite worlds though, especially if some bonehead tries to explore the entire map and ends up with a save file that is several hundred megs. That would be a pain to save to the cloud and might cause several issues if persistent worlds are implemented.
I'm hoping "a lot bigger" means 3000x3000 at the very minimum though. My math could be way off here but 3000² would be around 9-10x larger than 360 worlds I think. 5000² would be ~25x bigger and 10,000² would be ~100x bigger.
Looks like we won't be getting PC-size worlds. Should still be awesome though.
That's what I was hoping for honestly, not "infinite" but still much bigger. Looks like the Xbox One will end up being the only place I play Minecraft after all.
I know for a fact that people will still complain about the lack of infinite worlds no matter how many times they're told it's impossible. They are so stubborn that even if a dev looked them straight in the eye and told them it would never happen, they would still keep demanding.
People want infinite worlds because it eliminates the worry of ever running out of resources, having everything you need in one world (not needing to spawn anything in because it's missing in the limited world), no need to make a new world because you have 30,000,000 x 30,000,000 to build and explore in, and many other reasons.
Some people just want to explore. Some people want to build a lot or build very large things. There are so many reasons to want bigger worlds. I doubt that we'll see infinite worlds because even most multiplayer servers on the PC do not have infinite worlds as it's too much of a strain on the server. Most servers limit the size of their worlds so it only generates so far. The only place that really has a "seemingly" infinite world is single player on the PC version.
I for one don't necessarily want the seemingly infinite worlds of the PC version, but I would like something much larger than the extremely limited 864x864 of the 360 Edition. Anything higher than that by a decent margin will be a marked improvement on the next gen versions for me.
and here is the perfect answer Plus you do not wanna run out of room for building

Is that seriously an emote of you sticking your tongue out at me? I wish I could say anything without being censored or banned right now, you deserve it!
Boy, did I get jumped on when I said "I'll wait for 4J themselves to say something (about infinite worlds coming to nextgen consoles) before I'll believe it". Like if Owen Hill said it, it just had to be true, right?
However, 4J didn't say just how much a "lot bigger" is- just "not 'infinite'". Also, apparently, they aren't changing the way the consoles save files. Ram isn't the problem. Unlike the PC, apparently the consoles still needs to 'remember' everywhere you've visited, so the further out you go, the bigger the (HD) save file gets, and that's your limiting factor. (With the 360 it was ram, as some didn't have a HD).
I do agree with ThankOurTroops- there's that vocal 1% who will never be happy unless 'infinite' happens.
I can' see all the "When are we gonna get infinite worlds?" posts now.

That doesn't fix the issue of never being able to find anything.

That is a really great idea.
Told you, It's the BEST idea for 4J, because some want small, some want large and some want infinite like me.

Well yes and no because the P.E can handle it(I think because of Budget problem 4J studios won't)but I’m perfectly fine with the world size
