Well i was right about the first Texture pack being crap its even worse than i predicted it to be I thought it was going to be like oCD or something but its worse than that So i woke up at 6AM getting ready for school i read 4J's tweet that the mash up pack released so i got on minecraft i got the trial i checked out the map first it was....good i guess and then i loaded up my tree mansion world with the Tpack on and everything just look so stupid my sugercane looked like metal my wheat were flowers? my melons looked like An Advanced metal block My diamond pickax had to curves on the end of it making it look like a sledge hammer my sword look like a giant needle and the wood in my treehouse looked like metal pipes And the ores and gold and iron blocks looked nothing like it at all gold isn't even gold obsidian looks like white cheese and my giant mushrooms are metal? i didn't even want to play minecraft for days because of this horrible release So then i went to school ticked on because they are charging $5 for the dang thing i would pay $5 only for Dokucraft nothing else that texture pack has actual work put into it What are your thoughts on the first Texture pack for The 360 i would almost say 4J is turning into Infinity ward or Trey arch Overpricing there poorly put together DLC
People get really worked up over trivial things these days.
If you don't like it, don't buy it. Wait for the next one. Or the one after that. Just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean it's crap. It just means you don't like it.
I think you're going to be waiting a long time to spend your $5. My understanding is that in order to bring that particular texture pack to the Xbox, 4J would have to get all the individual people who worked on it to grant legal permission to 4J to use it... and there are apparently a lot of them. In my experience, whenever it's necessary to get large groups to sign off on anything, the project usually dies on the table because one or two people in the crowd don't sign.
I'm not even certain they need their permission. As far as I can tell, keeping in mind I'm no lawyer, they're in the public domain and there is no copyright on them. Even if there is they only need to be changed slightly to side-step this issue. This is a douchebag move for sure but I'm certain it's possible. They were, afterall, given away freely in the first place and made available to anyone who cared to download them. Much the same as people write mods for minecraft due to it's open-source nature and Mojang doesn't sue them. Whether or not 4J charges money for them, and therefore profits, from someone else's work may be a different story. A lawyer may argue that all 4J Studios must do is add a notation that "So-and-so" is responsible for the creation of this texture pack.

I think it's the fact that they plan to make money off of someone else's idea. They don't want to be sued, so I think they're taking every measure against that. There's probably a lot of little loopholes they could take, but it's more honest and professional to get permission first.

. . .
I think the problem some folks like you are having is that you expected the mash-up to work like a mere texture pack. It isn't, and it doesn't. It's meant to go along with a different build than a regular MC world you already have. It introduces a whole new theme, with blocks looking completely different. In the future, we'll probably get pure texture packs, which will serve the purpose you want. THis isn't it, so if it doesn't suit you, just don't buy it.

I think you need to do some studying up on copyrights and trademarks internationally before you go spouting off things like "Even if there is they only need to be changed slightly to side-step this issue." That's a common myth.. Changing something slightly does not necessarily mean that you haven't infringed on someone's elses copyrights. Having an exact replica of something doesn't necessarily mean that you have. If you don't believe me:
"Copyright law recognises the right of an author based on whether the work actually is an original creation, rather than based on whether it is unique; two authors may own copyright on two substantially identical works, if it is determined that the duplication was coincidental, and neither was copied from the other."
i lol'd at this ... people are getting worked up about this because we have been waiting ages for a texture pack and they come out with somehting that in survival ... makes no sense... and in my eyes doesn't even work when we don;t even have access to proper servers ((which i hope they bring out at some point as buying a whole other account and another xbox is not logical to me ))
but waiting months and then something bad comes from that waiting ofc people are gonna be dissapointed... and rant about it simple as.
sorry but thats exactly what texture packs do on minecraft. btw.. go from default to packs like sphax, dokuv#craft do genrally make the game look alot better.
people are disgruntled as most texture packs the color coding is the kinda the same , you wood liike genrally like wood and you can tell what ore's are .. but in this as diamond is blackj and all ores are just a diffrent shade of grey is can me meh to the eyes
This, however, is NOT a texture pack. WHEN a texture pack comes out, it probably will have the same kind of color coding as the vanilla game has and will probably be so conservative in nature that it will make any build people have done in the past look good. This is a mash-up - which originated in music culture as: mix two different, often incompatible, things together, stir a little, and see what comes out in the end. Yeah, it's a little walk on the wild side, just for fun... it isn't supposed to make perfect sense. Chill a little and have some fun with the mash-up while you're still waiting for your texture packs. 4J have said that they are still trying to work out the legalities so that they can use your PC faves... and eventually give you guys what you keep saying you want.

Except that people like it. Just because he thinks it's bad and that it's crap doesn't mean that it is. It's just bad for him, not everyone else on Earth.
I just tried the trial (You should of too, so this is actually your fault in a way, so stop whining!) and I think the texture packs are a great addition to minecraft! I assume this Mass Effect pack is for building stuff and making maps.

This is exactly what I was going to say +1 for trials!
Everybody is entitled to their opinion and personally I'm disappointed that there aren't some actual guns and unique items brought in from ME.
Hopefully other mash up packs have more than just retextured stuff, I some unique gameplay experiences.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.

Oh geez..... gotta laugh when someone quotes directly from wikipedia then instructs someone else to brush up on their knowledge. Good luck walking into the Supreme Court with your wikipedia quotes. Copyright law is really very vague and full of grey areas. The law states that the onus is on the plaintiff to prove that your work was copied directly. How does one prove that? Almost impossible. Why do you think Chinese car manufacturers get away with blatantly ripping-off other manufacturer's designs by changing the name and styling just enough to satisfy the law, but still so little that the two product are virtually identical. Maybe the BMW and Rolls Royce legal teams didn't get their degrees from Wikipedia University like you.
Nobody in 4J Studios position is ever going to just blatantly rip off another design. Why bring so much legal heat on themselves for so little gain? But if it is given away freely, they receive no profit from the product and they attribute the design to the original creator then I'm not sure what can be done to stop it. Either way, like I said, it's a douchebag move. Far better to simply get the original creators permission to use their design.

Check out Section 106 and 107. All I said, in effect, is that the test of whethor or not something infringes on copyrights can be based on more than just whether or not the persons doing the copying "change [something] slightly." If they did it expressly to side-step the issue of copyright, chances are even better that they have actually infringed upon copyrights. People are capable of generating (and have done so in the past) duplicate works independently of other works... and that is why copyright laws don't just look at how similar the two products are when assessing copyright ownership. Also, the copyright owner has a right to prevent a mutilation of their work, so if the slight changes a person might make are deemed by the courts to be a mutilation rather than an effort to generate an honest new copyrightable work, the likelihood of their deeming an infringement goes up... but then may go down again if the work is deemed to have been a parody (under fair use).
All I said is that the issue is more complex that just spouting off that people who want to use copyrighted material for resale only have to change a few things about it to get away with it. The biggest reason people get away with copyright infringement is that most copyright holders never attempt to bring an action against the people who infringe on their copyrights... and if they do, the issue is more frequently settled out of court.
Of course, as you say, infringing on copyright is a "douchebag move" and I think 4J and the other corporations involved have a little more integrity than that. If they are unable to negotiate a deal with the joint owners of certain texture packs, they probably will just not offer them to us and instead offer ones that they are able to legitimately obtain the rights to. (There is also a section discusssing joint ownership among groups of individuals.)
I thought it was going to be like oCD or something but its worse than that
So i woke up at 6AM getting ready for school i read 4J's tweet that the mash up pack released so i got on minecraft i got the trial i checked out the map first it was....good i guess
and then i loaded up my tree mansion world with the Tpack on and everything just look so stupid
my sugercane looked like metal my wheat were flowers? my melons looked like An Advanced
metal block
My diamond pickax had to curves on the end of it making it look like a sledge hammer
my sword look like a giant needle and the wood in my treehouse looked like metal pipes
And the ores and gold and iron blocks looked nothing like it at all
gold isn't even gold obsidian looks like white cheese and my giant mushrooms are metal?
i didn't even want to play minecraft for days because of this horrible release
So then i went to school ticked on because they are charging $5 for the dang thing
i would pay $5 only for Dokucraft nothing else that texture pack has actual work put into it
What are your thoughts on the first Texture pack for The 360 i would almost say 4J is turning into
