I've been working on implementing a farm on a mushroom island lately. After some time I got the island down to the size i wanted, stacked up and placed my spawn floor, started up my cooker and steeped back a bit for mooshroom's to start spawning.
Oddly I can only get at very most 2 to spawn at any given time, there are no other passive or aggressive mobs within 128 blocks of me, except maybe some squid which I'm working on rectifying. I do not have any caged or penned off animals, no dogs, or cats.
The wiki mentions that they spawn in groups of 2 to 8, but after several hours the very most I see is still just 2. Has anyone taken note of this on their worlds, is the xbox version limited to just 2?
Appreciate any information one can give, and thanks in advance.
I suggest you bring wheat, lead them to another chunk or two "loading area", and trap them there. Then go back to your mushroom isle. If they still don't spawn, you're just out of luck and should wait longer.
I have a world where my only mushroom isle was about 12 blocks of mycelium..ended up placing more dirt and they eventually spawned.
Its not a matter of getting them to spawn, I just can't seem to get more then 2 at a time, which kinda puts a 'hamper' on the whole steak farm. The goal here was to get the cows to spawn, and auto cooked, dropping cooked beef and of course leather. I'm using the mushroom island because no other creatures can spawn here.
Seems that you still don't understand the purpose of a auto-kill-cook farm, i don't want to breed them, i want to farm the crap outa them. The whole purpose of creating the farm there was simply because it just spawns these mooshrooms and only mooshrooms. However because of the limit of just 2, the farms production is not all that great.

If you enlarge the biome could you get more to spawn?
Tried that, it has to be in the code that only 2 can spawn in the area at any given time. Its sad as this biome is a GREAT way of getting steak on the PC.
Meant no disrespect but leading them away and breeding them defeats the purpose of automation. The whole point of using this area was because mooshrooms are the ONLY creature capable of spawning in the area. If they spawned in normal numbers like most passive mobs, they should have provided a good food source, since its very easy to funnel and drop the cows through lava, stetting them on fire and killing them with the drop height, resulting in cooked steak. Because mooshrooms are the only creature capable of spawning here we don't need to worry about the farm ever clogging up or breaking with unknowns.

How automated can it be without hoppers? you gonna stand there and wait for em to spawn and then die?
All my farms, i start with 2 cows, breed them, go do something else, repeat untill they glitch through the walls, breed em again, kill all the adults infront of the babys, Pick up the loot, and punch a few of the babys cause I'm kinda a ****.
Point being, A semi auto farm will be better than any auto farm until we get hoppers.
P.S. Mooshrooms are 100X more valuable for their mushroom stew than for steak.
I've done test in a creative world. (where I filled an entire superflat world up with water, besides for a small platform where I do test.) and I found that there can be a total of 50 Mooshrooms spawned at once. Maybe that information will help?

Yes, but those are 'human spawned'. I want similar behavior with all passive mobs, being that they can continue to spawn until the cap is reached. There should be spawns of upto 4 or 5 at a time I believe.

I do have other things I can do on the isle then just 'stand' there as you so put it. And its true you can't totally automate the process, but then again, if we looked at everything from this point of view why build mob farms, after all we are just 'standing' there right.

All fine and dandy but why bother when you can just have cooked steak delivered too you without the hassle of having to breed, and provide any type of lodging and maintaining any of them ect.

Your joking right? Mushroom stew albet a good food source requires that you use additional inventory space for bowls, and they don't stack or at least they didn't last time i checked.
Anyhow point of the island is just that to spawn mooshrooms, and it works but the numbers are controlled, and i wanted to know why, when there are no other caps on any other passive mobs that can spawn other then a the passive mob limit reached. There is no mention of different spawn algorithms on the xbox compared to the PC in this respect either.
I was more concerned with this being a possible bug and thought i would check with others to see if they could get more then 2 to spawn at any given time.
Its because the only thing that can spawn on a mushroom isle is mooshrooms, even hostile mobs can't spawn in this biome.
I understand this.. perhaps I should have been more clear.:) My fault.. I meant that I never noticed smaller 'normal' island overpopulated with passive mobs. But it would be hard to test whether or not a larger Mushroom biome would mean more mooshrooms spawns without a couple hours of work. Even then, enlarging a Mushroom biome might just be fruitless because adding more mycelium might just mean you have mycelium in a ocean biome. Perhaps given the xbox map size, hence biome size, there is an unintended cap of sorts?
you may check out my simplified animal husbandry tutorial for a great device for breeding that could be used to supply your cooker.
i know you want to use the island, but if its causing you that much grief maybe its time to abandon it. as far as a natural mooshroom spawn cap ive never been lucky enough to spawn a mushroom biome so i cant help you there. seems strange though. since i believe they are counted with the other quadruped passive mobs. you dont have to worry about the squids though, or chickens for that matter.
did you try building a platform of mycelium maybe 100 blocks in the air, and as large as you can make it.

Well I don't think we should have to abandon things that 'should' work, or that worked on the same version the PC was at awhile back. There really isn't any reason that mooshrooms shouldn't be spawning as per norm.
I have tried leveling the biome and increasing it to its max area space, but still only 2 spawn at any given time. its obvious something is hard coded to keep it this way, and hopefully its fixed in the next update.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess with reasonable confidence that Mooshrooms aren't singled out from other passive mobs.
Perhaps spawning space? Mushroom biomes tend to be smallish.. and I've never noticed smaller islands overpopulated with passive mobs.
