I've heard that wool can be hit by lightning [especially in-game tips], but if this happens, how do I build open-air wool images without getting them destroyed? Does surrounding it in a sort of hard, fire-proof rock [like covering the top with stone] prevent such a thing from occuring?
Oh yeah, glass doesn't get on fire xD Does covering the top only [and I mean RIGHT on top, not to the side and top at all] work?
Want to make a floating dragon in front of my house, maybe even make a giant 3-D dragon, and build into it... The giant projects I most likely will never do
You could turn "fire spreads" off. That way, if the wool does get struck, only one block would ever ignite. I don't generally build with wool, so I could be off base; but honestly, I don't think the probability is very high anyway. I've been playing in the tutorial world lots ever since TU7 with fire spreads on... and my Minecraft sign (which is made of black and white wool) is still very much intact.
Do you mean by lightning? Because well... 99% of the time when lightning hits anything its put out by the rain.. I've heard that lightning could strike outside of the raining area.. But I've never seen it... So you should be ok.. as long as it's not a man-made fire source.

Oh, that just pleasantly killed my worries over wool xD Now to start seriously shearing the colored sheep farm
Basically, I guess there's no real need to prevent lightning striking wool, so ty to everybody

Currently playing the Xbox 360 version, this amazing seed
I need ta write something better...
If you were to build a roof over the ground, the lightning would actually pass through it to hit ground level. Building a roof would actually cause your wool to be destroyed easier than letting it be open air. If it's open air, then the rain would extinguish the fire set by the lightning.
lol This game gets tricky at times!..
Cool, layer 64 would make sense... I've always wondered..
[size=medium]
Maybe???? o.0
I guess we'll never know xD We could [get a ] mod a PC version to strike lightning continuously to check it out, but still doesn't answer it exactly for Minecraft... Now, how would you implement this anyways?

You know, I'm not sure I actually buy into this despite what the Wiki says. Has anyone ever been hit by lightning while standing inside their house in Minecraft?

Npe. However, I've seen videos of people on the PC using Single Player Commands to cause lightning to strike. In the video, you can see it pass through the roof of a house to hit the ground. You also see it pass through leaves to hit the ground under a tree.
That to me sure makes it sound possible. I think it's just the chances of it actually happening in the game is so remote that it's hard to test or actually know.
Olla. I've been meaning to join up for a while & this thread prompted me.
It happens. I built an underground club room completely out of wool that went way higher than expected so was gradually re-building the landscape back over the top of it. Got distracted (like you do) & started doing stuff inside. Little while later i realise it's a lot lighter than it should be.....& look up to see a big fat hole where part of my ceiling used to live and a dozen blocks of wall ablaze. I was not impressed.
Thing is i can't say for certain that there was lightning (way to busy freaking out) but there was definitely rain & not a drop of lava in sight. Been scared to build externally with it since.
Welcome to the Forums!! and weird... was it on the 360? How deep underground were you?
Well it doesn't rain in deserts... so unless he had a Freak lightning that would strike well outside of the rain.. then he'd be safer in the desert.
That made no sense.... rain puts out fire. Hence the prior comment, not building in deserts. Lightning does strike in deserts, but since there is no rain, then there is nothing to have a chance to put it out. O_o

Lightning can go directly through blocks to hit the ground. - Minecraft Wiki
You know, I've never understood that... As in what constitutes as "the ground" according to lightning.
Sooo... technically speaking, even with the air open, lightning would strike nothing below layer 64? Or would it simply not go through blocks at 64?
Man, we be gettin' into the technical aspects xD
