As long as passive mobs cannot move more than 20 blocks in any direction, they will not despawn and disappear. Hence why you see so many mobs hangout on single block cliffs. They get stuck and can't move so they don't despawn.

Well, this is worthless information. I haven't done much with animals, but since sheep will soon regrow wool and I have some projects on my survival world that need it, decided to start sheep farming. Started with five pens that were 25x8, and sheep despawned regularly. Hopped online and found this very thread and this very post. Cool, made the pens 19x8, guess what, they still despawn. So thanks for the help. Did you even test this information before throwing it out there?

My information comes directly from 4J themselves. So don't get mouthy with me.
I have pens that are 10x10 on my world and my animals have never despawned.
Can you clarify the detail about the 15 by 15 space? Does this mean keeping them in a larger area will not keep them?

So many animals jammed together will cause a pile of lag to any visitors....
