Still a waste of time compared to other methods in my opinion.
Also I've had straight-down falls refuse to drop...period. They will sit there endlessly until I do something about them...

They take a very long time to go away and you make the containment thing only one block deep and I just cover it in glass blocks if you just make it on ground level.I dont use water cause I have lakes all over my world.

unless people care an awful lot things will not cange they just will not
I mark my way through the city by the buildings people have created. Cosmo-Slotnick building in the west, Kiki Holcombe's place to the east, and the Enright House in the south.

not many of my friends build on my map and when they do its to far for me to see

I use to use that meathed too but that was in servival and I still kept gittig lost then I started playing with Neather rock if you Light it up with your Fire Starter you can watch it burn forever even in the rain kind of like a tourch but better but the animals are dumb enough to set themselves on fire you can even use the stuff to decorate the outside of your house if its some type of stone it sparks like lava so wood and trees would burn and be careful with it it is still like fire.the person who showed me how to do it burned half his world by accident. You can it when you run out of wood and you dont want to go scavage for wood.I used it for a garden heater make shure to keep plants 1 or 2 blocks away.Neather rock is cheep effichent and maks for a great stone fire place but keep anything flamable 1 or 2 blocks away.Even set Neather rock on ice it will melt it but the Neather rock will stay in place.
TLDR... I saw the word Netherrack, so I'll comment on that....
I use netherrack instead of torches to light up the area around my village. Since it's so close to my village, it kills all kinds of mobs. Then I just go out and collect all the drops. Block columns on your upperworld are the easiest way to see important stuff from a distance without looking at your map. Unless, of course, you built hovering platforms.
If I plan on visiting a spot frequently, I'll build some kind of shelter above it. That way it's fairly easy to see the cobblestone on the map.
Lava markers are pretty good for finding your way around as long as you don't act like you're brain dead when making it then it is the best way to mark mines and bases i like making a lava fall in the shape of a + inside a 1 block deep pit
The first world i made is like 85% winter biome so i recently made a giant version of this out on the ice then started removing the source block and dumping water on it now it is a giant cobbblestone mountain covered in lava i've thought about hallowing it out but that would probably take a couple weeks even in creative
When lava isn't on it, it sort of reminds me of a volcano

Well actually, villages already show up as dots on the map. As for other spots, I suggest making an 8x8 pool of lava.
They do?
I just remember seeing the grey and green boxes that mark the stone-roofed houses and farms, respectively.
