Most people using a lot of obsidian in builds do so by creating a 'mold' out of blocks and filling it with lava, you then pour water over and voila! Instant obsidian, no diamonds required just some buckets.
Even with an inventory filled with nothing but buckets that takes even longer than mining obsidian. Unless there's a really large lava pool very, very close to where you're building, the travel time alone is longer. And using a portal to go to the nether to fill up the buckets also takes longer. At least that's my experience.

actually not much different in time. It does take a while to mine obsidian, but you still have to make it regardless. Also you would still have to walk/transport the material. I find it a lot easier and less stress of worrying about diamonds to just mold where I want it. Only use the diamond pick if I change my mind, but usually that doesn't happen when I deal with obsidian. Unless of course I wanted to relocate a portal or 2.
Lava is not really the problem, it is how far you would want to walk to get it, even for a portal. That is what having a nice rail system is for...:D Either way each to their own I guess...

Finding surface lava pools seems to be much more common now. and if you dont have one on the surface, and like tamorr said, rail system. I like to just put an infinite water source next to the lava, and just make a pool where im mining the obsidian. seal yourself in, and all you have to do is be patient.

In my village, I placed fenced in snow golems on top of 3x3x3 cobblestone blocks on the outskirts. My homes are usually always built with 2 -3 cobblestone block thick walls with gaps under windows, so that I may safely swing and hit the creepers without setting them off. I always put glass up near my doorways so that I can see what's out there before stepping out.
As others have already mentioned... plenty of lighting is necessary, too. Also fencing areas off, to keep a safe area around your housing may be a good idea, too. For example, in my village I have my farm animals fenced in one area, my garden area in another fenced area, then the rest of the houses are well lit up with torches on all corners... and the village is completely fenced in or at least 3 blocks off the ground so nothing can get in from outside the village.
and always light up your roof. I forget sometimes, and when I look out, and see nothing, I go out, and "sssssss" boom
Yeah... forgot that. That's the one place most people forget to light up. I often place overhangs just so spiders can't get on top of buildings. Usually my overhangs are just above window level, so about 4 blocks high. That way I can see spiders that are trying to get on my roof.
I would just build everything out of Brick and/or Obsidian. And if a Creeper spots you and you have no way to escape, run and hit him to knock him back so he doesn't explode.
Pics or gtfo right? This show a good chunk of the city. Spawn jail on the right with excecution area in front. The buildings are pretty random cause everyone builds their own house. On the bottom left is a nightclub with a bar, stripper pole, dj booth with redstone noteblock songs. most of the roofs are dark, but they are all stairs and halfslabs so creepers wont spawn up there.
All blocks have a "blast resistance" of sorts. Blocks like sand and dirt have next to none, so if you explode anything on them, their gone. Things like stone, cobblestone, and endstone (not yet in the game) have a pretty high blast resistance, and all blocks but the ones that their right on top of or right next to will be safe.
The only two creeper proof materials are bedrock (which is indestructable...period) and obsidian. Thats why obsidian is a popular buiding material, even if not showing.
Speaking of cactus: I 've heard months ago a sentence like "creepers don't like cactus". Is there a connection between planting cactus and creepers staying away? Probably I misinterpreted something.
It will die if it touches cactus, just like any other mob or player...
Creeper explosions in water don't seem to damage nearby blocks, at least not those underwater.
Surround your city with a 4-5 high continuous waterfall, around a cobble wall or such, and you've got instant, easily removed creeper-blast protection.

Creepers are stupid and will keep walking into a cactus until they die if your on the other side of it.
Can walls be made of cactus? I tried this pre-update in a desert world of mine, and it would only allow me to place cactus diagonally from eachother. I'm just wondering if it's possible to change it now. Right now the walls are an octagonal shape and the diagonals are cactus while the flush sides are sandstone.

Without the skin... Beneath the storm... Under these tears...The walls came down
No, we cant put cacti next to each other, yet. I think they can on the computer, so, maybe we'll get them sometime, eh?
no. You can not even do that on the computer. Unless a potted plant is what you are refering to, but I am unsure if you can put cacti in those. They have never been able to be put next to each other. However on the same note they do spawn sometimes next to each other, even on the pc edition. That is on the initial generation of the terrain...

Hello. I have been having a ton of fun in my rpg village world. We recently made a courthouse to figure out who was at fault for a feud between two players constantly killing eachother.
The only problem ive been having is creepers. I will kill them easily, but some of the people just walk around the village setting them off on my buildings/roads. i usually kick people if they keep doing this without repairing the damage. But its fun to have a lot of people in your world.
So ive tried light posts everywhere, i think tourches all over the ground looks tacky.
What have you guys found most affective in creeper defence?
First of all, creepers avoid the light if they DON'T SEE YOU. If they see you they go into chase mode and will walk through light if you go into one. Second of all, what does the first paragraph have ANYTHING to do with this thread? :/ just a thought. :|
