I was wondering if its supposed to happen... I was working on a house not far from the spawn, and noticed light that hadn't been there before. I went to investigate and sure enough, there was another bonus chest. The first one I had mined and picked up to use.
Is it supposed to happen that way, or was it just a fluke?
I think it's a bug that was mentioned in the bug thread.
It will respawn every time you re-load the world. Giving you a potentially unlimited supply of basic items, without needing to do anything.
It has done this since before the last update. Quite annoying imo, especially if you build your house right at the spawn point. . . . . wonder what would happen if you destroy it, place a bed, then re-load the world? Hmmm...

*Tests your theory and idea* Well, sure enough. I placed a bed down, and it didn't do much... except sit there. Kinda expected that. But at least you've answered my question!
I'm guessing the bonus chest appeared next to, or near, your newly created bed?
In the general spawn area... about 7 blocks away or so.
(I took a bed I had before noticing the glitch, placed it where the last new chest was, and exited and saved. Loaded the world, and its like I said above. About 7 blocks away.)
It's a known bug from the last update that hasn't been fixed yet.
TBH, I'd rather it not get fixed. . . it's one of them bugs that doesn't affect your game and can be useful. I mean, no one really starts building where they spawn, everyone explores first. Don't they?
kinda... I mean if I hadn't had a look in creative before hand... I will be searching for a hidy-hole to start my underground house in. If that is not found I dig or run till I do. The bonus chests are useful for the first night or so... After you have settled down and for the most part secured the area, then that chest because utter nonsense... Even if it is free materials... Not that I do not mind that I just usually upgrade my equipment to at least stone or iron by then.
I probably would exploit that in the begining if I could but the problem is actually remembering where the initial spawn point actually is...lol
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I might honestly say keep it. What if you host a game, and your freind comes in for the first time? I don't exactly loan stuff out a lot, and it would be helpful to them as well to get food and tools to start in your world. After all, the first time they'll be at the spawn!
