Question, does anyone know the 'rules' on growing stuff underground? I have a small base way down one level above bed rock and I was planting some wheat seeds and everything was fine, I had 3 rows of 5 (maybe 4) planted on dirt, after I tilled it, etc. Then for no apparent reason, two of the blocks with seeds on them self destructed, so to speak. The seeds disappeared as if someone ran over them and every time I re placed them, they soon did it again, but only a couple of blocks, not all of them; the other ones are growing. And I don't get the seeds back after they jump out of their block, either. Anyone know why??? Help!
You need to light up the area around those spots more. Try placing a torch or a glowstone block near the affected area.
Same thing happened to me. I noticed that the spots affected were furthest from any torch or light source, so I placed more torches on the wall above them and it fixed the problem.
yes they are both right. all you have to do is add light. and make sure about that water thing. when seeds dont have enough light they basically dissapear into nothingness

I just did some research, and water only makes crops grow faster, but wheat will grow without it
awesome

Actually the only thing plants need is light. For the exception of sugarcane, that does need water to even be placed.
Some you can even plant if the light level is too low, and will pop off if you manage to plant. Like pumpkins and melons. Took me a while to figure out I needed more light nearby. I already had light but was not enough for a certain few...lol
Water indeed does make wheat grow a bit faster.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
There are two things I always do with my underground farms.
1 Place lots of torches!
2 Put fence post under your tilled dirt, it wont dry out and kill your crops and you can harvest and walk on it without it going bad.
I actually did it without water. Just the couple blocks that lacked light died.
You are correct. Wheat will grow without water if it has enough light. It just grows very, very slowly. Adding water within 4 blocks of the wheat will make it grow faster.
I was wondering about this. Can you also coax a tree to grow underground? I suppose you could just build one from parts...
Coax a tree? Not sure what you mean by that... But yes you can grow trees underground... You just have to have enough width and height for them to grow. 6-7 in height for oak and the white wood. A bit more for dark wood and well when jungle wood comes about. having space between each is a must for every one except the oak. The oak can grow close together albeit slowly. Still though I usually space 2 between at least to have good growth rates..
There is way to grow anything that can be grown normally above ground to do it also underground.:D

Many different things affect wheat growth rates. The only actual requirement is a tilled dirt block and a light source 9 or above.
Wheat growth rates are affected by neighboring blocks and hydration. The wiki page http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Wheat_Farming
has all the important information as well as some interesting charts.
If all that info doesn't make sense a good rule of thumb for fast growing crops is to have a water source within 4 blocks horizontally and on the same level or one block above; then have alternating rows of farmland and planted wheat.

Try it! It worked for me lol. And underground, at that.
