This small tutorial is a 1x2x2 day/night detector with no redstone required!
You might wanna know this though;
chickens prefer bright light. So if it is dark and you have some glowstone, a chicken will come and hang out there. If it is day the chicken will wander freely happily playing chick chick quack or w/e chickens play.
Anyways, I will be adding pics soon, but not now.
So, create a 1x2x2 room (1 in width, 2 in length, and 2 in height) with any block that is solid and does not emit light or allow light to pass through it. Next, add a chicken inside, (eggs), the 2 high wall will prevent him from escaping. (Sorry, Jimmy, this is your life choice)
Add a solid block for the roof on one side, leaving 1 block open, (for better results, put a glass pane where the hole is so no other animals/people get trapped.
Put a torch on the side covered by a block for the roof. Put a pressure plate (wooden only!) on the side with no block for a roof.
Have your w/e machine circuit connected to the pressure plate.
So, when it is day, the chicken will stand on the pressure plate, feeling the warm sun. At night, the chicken will try to stay warm under the torch, not bothering the pressure plate.
Done! Simple as that!
*Pics 2 come, so no rage about that please. :P*

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
That is interesting behavior...O_o Reminds me of the villagers on the pc edtion going in and out the doors between day/night. They sure love doors...lol
Looks good enough to try out, although at the moment would have to think of something to use it for... As it doesn't help remodeling certain areas of my kingdom. Sure I'll think of something.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Some people use day / night detectors, like a lighting system. But they use a BUD and grass... and water... so a lot of space and mining must be done just for the detector. With this, you can collect eggs and have a detector... Just don't let him out
EDIT:
Also, the way most people use it is very in accurate, Sometimes the grass doesn't grow back for day...

Some BUD-based light sensors are inaccurate, yes, but some designs are extremely accurate. DewRadley made a post about this awhile back. The chicken sensor still sounds pretty awesome though, much smaller and more resource-friendly. Also, couldn't you use a stone plate if you wanted, or do chickens not affect them? I know for a fact that sheep do... they absolutely loved the piston door in my old 1.7.3 world...
We does every one have to defend an idea or a post here. this people who like it can use it if you don't like it and don't want to use don't attack it., it is a waste of band width and you drag people down.
Lets kill the creative spirit so there is none, Independent thought is bad.
lets just hang the person for coming up with an original idea that might make allot of people happy it seems. whos got the rope and who has the tree.
Though at the moment I can't think of a use for it in any of my builds I think this is a great find, since I can't seem to figure out BUDs myself lol thnaks a bunch for the tip
This is a very cool idea. When I get home tonight I'm going to run some accuracy tests, maybe build a dozen or so and hook them up to RS-NOR latches hooked up to pistons (for easier visual confirmation the sensor was activated) if it's pretty accurate I may try to implement it into my map somehow. Like a chest that's hidden until night.

It's to entertain some of our communities members.
Or it's just him talking about his pure fun machine.

BECAUSE IT'S FRIKKIN B-A BROTHER!
But seriously, how else are you going to have your lava fountains and lights turned on (Or unblocked rather :P)? Pushing buttons manually? HERESY!

Nice idea though. I may use this for my next build. Be a useful auto light switch for the whole castle.
Snyder - great idea and looks like a simple, fun build. I like Ragnarock1982's idea to expand it into a light switch. Can't wait to see the results.
