The render distance is already decreased in split screen. I switch back and forth a lot to check build progress from a distance. I don't know if is a coded decrease or simply a performance issue when adding more players.
I think it's probably a coded decrease make to accommodate splitscreen within the performance limitations of the XBox. It's probably the main reason why 4JSteve was able to say (in a post to a thread sometime ago that eliminating splitscreen would have little or no effect on allowing for an increase in world size.
