Hey there! I'm here with a few tips on how to successfully mine in minecraft! Also, this is my first post so please enjoy!
Tip #1: Never dig straight down for risk of falling into traps like lava or dangerous falls. Instead, just dig down in a staircase kind of fashion.
Tip # 2: Never dig straight up for risk of faling blocks like sand or gravel and for liquids like lava or digging the bottom of a lake (for risk of drowning).
Tip #3: if you digging for a hidden underground cave, make sure to listen to water if you know you haven't encountered any near where you are digging.
Tip #4: If you're mining obsidian, make sure to have a bucket of water on you for making sure to make obsidian and to help make sure that it doesn't melt if there's lava underneath it. (Small Tip: When making obsidian using a bucket of water and a lava pool, make sure that you place it somewhere on a block right by it so that it sweeps over all the lava, turning it into obsidian, instead of throwing it in the lava itself making only 1 block of obsidian.)
Tip #5: Before you mining make sure your prepared for mining. Bring:
- A good pick axe and shovel (preferably iron or diamond) - A bucket or two - A HECK load of torches (mainly about 2 or 3 stacks). It’s optional to bring redstone torches for marking ways out or other points of interest in the mine. - A bunch of wood (for making crafting tables, sticks for tools and chests for holding any rare finds) - If you can’t find a lot of coal, bringing some is best for torches or furnaces. Or if you don’t have any coal, bring charcoal if you have any. Optional: bring a bed and clock so that in case you think you need to have a midway point, sleeping in a bed in the mine will act as a one as long as it’s not destroyed (i.e. Creeper explosion) Tip #6: Rarity of ores and where to find it (this is not 100% accurate, this is just what I’ve seen):
Coal: Very common – Usually found in anywhere in caves or peeking out of the sides of mountains. Approx. 1 – 50 BPV (Blocks Per Vein)
Iron: Common – Usually found in caves, shallow or deep in. On rare occasions has it been seen outside of caves. N/A BPV
Redstone: Uncommon – Always found in deep in caves, mainly near lava pools. Approx. 1 – 10 BPV/4 – 5 PPB (Pieces Per Block)
Gold: Very uncommon – usually found a lot medium or deep within caves. Approx. 2 – 10 BPV.
Lapis Lazuli: Rare – Usually found in deep caves near where redstone generates and is almost as rare as diamond. N/A BPV/4-8 PPB
Diamond: Very Rare – One of the rarest ores to find. Always found deep in caves, usually near lava pools or buried under stone. Approx. 1 – 10 BPV/1 PPB
(Don’t rage if I haven’t added emeralds because I don’t have the full PC version of Minecraft. I just play the demo so I don’t get the 1.3.1 update which includes emeralds. I’m sorry but I don’t know anything about them. All I know is that they’re pretty rare. Also, this is for the Xbox Version, and there aren’t any emeralds in this version.)
Thanks for reading my tips about how to successfully mine in Minecraft!
*Ore doesn't need to be in a "cave". You can just mine a tunnel and find them.

i can dig straight down, just stand between 2 blocks and mine both of blocks, if u see that theres lava at 1 block u can just block the lava, theres lava under you but even if u fall u was between 2 blocks so the other block would block u form falling to the lava. baah whatever.
I may be wrong on this one, but i think lapiz's rarity was decreased.
I don't quite remember which update it was, though, and like i said, i might be wrong on this one.
Here's a tip: Carry a workbench, or whatever it's called, and a full stack of sticks. That way you can make stone tools on the fly from all the cobble you're piling up, and save the ores for better things than tools. Bring a diamond pickaxe but save it for when it's needed (e.g., gold, diamonds, redstone). Wear seems to be based on how many blocks are mined with a tool, not the hardness of the blocks mined. It's silly to waste diamonds mining gazillions of stone blocks.

I usually use my diamond pickaxe for everything stone related. I have enough diamond to make maybe 25 or so. And I usually find 7-15 diamonds everytime I go mining
It's definitely quicker that way. I just find it wasteful. Now, if the diamond pickaxe were to wear down more slowly on normal blocks like stone, I'd be more apt to use it on everything. But as far as I can tell, it wears down just as much from breaking up sandstone as from breaking up redstone. I don't like that, so I save it for use on blocks that must be mined with something better than stone tools.

Thanks for your advice puma! I'll make sure to use this in future posts.
If lapis is nearly as rare as diamond, then how comes I have a double chest full of it (I know it drops multiple, but still, I just find a sh*t ton of that crap)
It's becuase its not as rare as diamonds, it's just similar to it's rarity. I don't know how you have two chests full, but I'm just guessing that your map generator really likes you

I think that you might be right, considering that i got most of the ore info off of minecraft wiki.

Boxanata, this is for people who just started minecraft as well. I'm just recommending this to newbies. Thanks for the tip though!

Yeah, but what if you have to use the wood for furnace kindling if you can't find a lot of coal?

You can also use a bucket of lava.
It is good for 100 blocks I think but it keeps on cooking, does not stop like coal when the ingredient is taken out.
But I always bring raw wood instead of sticks and planks, saves alot of space. I make a stack of torches before I go mining then worry about more coal later, I always find that crap. Tools, water and some mushrooms with a wooden bowl and your good to go.

A pickaxe, shovel, and axe durabilities are based on the material used to makethe pick axe and how many blocks broken, regardless of type of blocks.
Taken from Wiki:
A use is counted only if a player completely breaks apart one block or hits a mob. If a block is only partially broken, this is not counted as a use. If a player happens to use a tool that is not suitable for the task at hand (e.g. Using an axe instead of a pickaxe to dig through stone, or hitting a mob with a shovel instead of a sword), that will count as two uses rather than one.
Proper use of tools will maximize their durability. Assuming a player uses a tool appropriately, the following list shows the maximum durability for tools of each material type:
Wood - 60 uses
Stone - 132 uses
Iron - 251 uses
Gold - 33 uses
Diamond - 1,562 uses
Note that even though gold tools have very low durability, they do the work very fast.
The amount of protection given by a piece of armor depends only on the material it is made of, and is not affected by the armor's remaining durability.
So stone would break a diamond pickaxe faster, as you're breaking cobblestone faster than any other materials with it.

I always use stone when mining, and carry a iron pick for redstone, diamond ect...
The reason is solid. Yes, diamond IS useful for mining fast as hell. Which is why I save it for large projects that require total strip mining of an area. Like making a multi-layered slime farm. Or clearing a mountain to build your mansion. Or making a super awesome spiral coaster into the bowels of the earth. Regular tunnel mining....stone all the way. You have infinite stone to use, and infinite wood. Diamond is gonna run out long before your needs for it will.

Although I cannot agree that diamond will "run out" on the map, I do agree with the methods.
I do the same thing... I use stone everything, leather armor, that kind of stuff. I use diamond for valuable ores and if I have large clearly outs or construction to do.

Right. Those facts bear out my impressions perfectly. Thanks for posting them. So I'm sticking to my advice. If the goal is to preserve ores for other things, use stone picks except when better are needed. If the goal is to drill through a lot of rock ASAP, use diamond and suck up the diamond wear.
well what if you've mined all of it in a certain area?
I highly doubt that. In just strip mining the bottom of a chunk out, (16X16 and 12 blocks high) I think I got around a couple stacks. Second one might not have been full...but the point is that I scored near 100 in just 12 layers of one chunk. If you ran out in a cave...dig a tunnel. One tunnel mine (2 high, 1 wide) usually gets me around 35-45 coal in short order. Conversely, wood is infinite and can be quickly harvested using bonemeal to make charcoal anyway. Fuel sources and light sources are in such an abundance that the word abundance doesn't even do it justice.

Lol I believe the term would be "near infinite" or just plain "infinite" would suffice.
Coal is stupid easy to find. Just mine for ANYTHING and you'll find mad coal.
