I want to make a lava pool that's pretty big so obviously I'm going to need a lot of lava, but running back and forth to a lava source underground is pretty annoying. Is there any way to make an infinite lava source like you can with water?
No, you can't. BUT, if it is multiplayer, you can just /sethome there then have your /home bed at your house, then just get inf lava from that lava pool, then repeat.

You can't do that on the 360 version.
To the OP: No, you can't. Not even on the latest version of Minecraft (Full Release: 1.2.5 on the PC).
I don't think you'll ever be able to, sorry to say. :/
I don't think you will ever be able to get an infinite lava source, it makes it kind of valuable if you can't exploit it. I would say though, how useful is lava?

Well it's a great light source (I think it's the brightest) plus I like it for its aesthetics

No, the sun is the brightest light source with a light level of 15. The brightest thing you can control are torches with a light level of 14. Lavas light level is up there with torches though.
There are plenty of uses for lava including traps and cool looking lava lamps. But it's pretty dangerous so it's best to be careful.

Well, glowstones and jack-o-lanterns also give off level 15 light. Which is weird, because you'd think a torch encased in a pumpkin would be dimmer than an uncovered torch, but eh.
Lava also makes the best monty python manuever weapon.
the lava in the nether is infinite. i set up a long stairway to get to the bottom, if you want to get there faster, make a rail system. i made it because the furnace bucket smelt thing, but then i found out that it consumes the bucket.

There is a lava sea at y=3(insert numeral here), stupid. Research, stupid. Don’t be stupid, stupid. Stupid stupid. Stupid stupid always being the most stupidest stupid he can stupidly stupid be as stupid.
- Fill your inventory with buckets.
- Left-most bucket, fill with lava.
- Dig a single-square hole in the ground in front of you.
- Empty the bucket into the hole
- Quickly cycle between RT and LT so your are switching to the next bucket and collecting lava.
Using this method you can fill four or five buckets from a single bucket of lava, which is as good as infinite.
^This is the closet to infinite lava you will get. I will confirm this works, but you have to be ninja quick.
In the ported Xbox 360 Edition, lava (as of 5-20-12) can be easily duplicated with a glitch in the following manner A 2x1 depression is mined out of dirt, and a bucket of lava is poured against the back "wall" of the depression. Once the lava begins to glow, it can be scooped back into the bucket. After a few frames, the lava will reappear in the depression while also being in the bucket. Both are source blocks that can be placed and collected. It should be noted that occasionally this method just destroys the source block.
actually you need one source block per obsidian you wish to create. technically you would be making an obsidian farm of with a lifetime potential of one product, wouldn't really call that a farm

You only need one source block to farm both
