I'm at the bottom of a cave and I hear growling mobs from somewhere. I dig in all directions but I can't find them and they always sound like they're right behind me. Are there any tips for finding the source? This seems to happen to me a lot and I have trouble finding them.
I just have a regular HD tv, no external speakers.
you're SoL then, the only way would be with some kind of surround sound. I think the most you'll get is whether they're more left or right of you and even that might be hard with just the built-in speakers
I think the distance to be able to hear mobs is 16 blocks. So dig 16 blocks in every direction. :\ You can kind of gauge which direction they are in once you have a good sized room - just keep running around until you can't hear them and you know that's the wrong direction.
I haven't implemented this method yet but I'm thinking that I'll dig a short tunnel in the general direction, then blow some tnt. Maybe kill a couple mobs in the process. Either way, you were probably going to mine that way anyhow.
I have a Turtle Beach head set so hearing then finding mob's is simple, but heres what YOU do. When you hear somthing stop and dig a 10x10 tunnle, 10 long then 10 long again through the center, basically a large (+) sign. If you find nothing in those 4 directions drop down 3 blocks from the center of your 10x10 cross and do another 10x10. Ambiance (sound) can only travle so far so you sould be able to find them this way. BTW, buy a head set, even a shitty Turtle Beach XL.
No-one suggested the X-ray glitch?
Have 2 pistons shove 2 TNT in to you, forcing you into the wall/TNT.
Look around for dark places.

I watched a video the other day about a new glitch, you take a glowstone and ender pearl and then dig down....I believe it was 15 blocks, now place the glowstone I think 2-5 blocks over you then throw the ender pearl at the glowstone and BAM!!!! 360 degrees of x-ray vision

That's a little costlier than the standard method, though. =\

Bust out zee TNT.
Me: Facepalm
Headphones. They will help you find any source of sound much easier than listening by speakers.
