Hey everybody, I find diamonds by spelunking and exploring lava rivers, but have not found much. I am goiong to start mining, but if there are more efficient ways, please feel free to tell me! Also, I am thinking of making the world a survival server, so if you want to join, go ahead and add and message me! PSN: Skippy_BamBam
Here's a great mining technique and an infinite unlimited diamond getter video. Also you can trade with villagers for diamond tools and armor. You can get enchanted fortune pics that will give you more diamonds when you mine and unbreaking enchantment will make your tools and armor last longer. You can also find diamonds in chest in temples, blacksmiths and in chest in the nether. Diamonds are found below level 17.
Correction, diamonds spawn under layer 15, not 17.
And are commonly found mostly around layers 10-13, due to the afformentioned spelunking, & lava lakes mostly starting at layer 10.
However, due to generation mechanics, & solidity of the layers, most larger veins will appear between layers 4-6.
Best technique for mining for diamonds is mine down to layer 5, make a small room, say 9x9 or so, 3 blocks high, use this for storage and stuff, and on an opposite wall, make a 1wide 2high shaft as far as you want, then starting at the beginning, make branches off the side, 1wide 2high, atleast 20blocks, space them 2 blocks apart. This gives you clear view of the contents of the chunk with minimal digging
If possible, silk touch the ores & store them, and/or use fortune 3 to maximize your count.
or you could do my method & just remove a few chunks in the overworld from Surface-bedrock, tends to produce a good amount of resources.

Correction, Diamond Ore is found at Y=16 or below, so the original statement diamonds are found below Y=17 is correct.
Also, The highest concentration of diamonds occurs in levels 5-12. Because of the lava lakes, there is slightly less diamond ore in the middle of that range (around layer 9).
Most people suggest starting at Y=11 so that you avoid Lava lakes which generate between Y=1 to Y=10
Well, to find lots of those shiny blue pieces of ultimate Minecraft underground heaven, you could do grid-mining at Y=5, just be careful to avoid lava lakes, which seem to be common at Y=6-7. Do this by mining a big room, at least 20 by 20 blocks, at least 2 blocks tall. Then, dig around, every 2 blocks on the wall of the room, or "base". Dig the tunnels 2x1 blocks. Dig them around in a maze. Make it really random. OR, dig diagonally downward in a tunnel 2x2 blocks, until you get to get to Y=5, or just one block above the bedrock layer. Then, dig forward 2x2 tunnel, away from the edge of the map. In an hour's time, you should find a fair number of diamonds. Works better if you branch mine and find deep, big caves and ravines full of lava. This maay give you a spot with obsidian to use your newly found diamonds on! I really hope this helps. It works wonders wonders for me! This is also a good forfinding a great amount of redstone. This may also include annoying amounts of cobblestone filling your inventory, if not done carefully can cause death in lava. To be safe, whenever you find diamonds, bring wood for chest to store them in, then collect them on your way out of your awesome mine, now hopefully diamond-filled. Good luck, crafter! : )
Branch mine in extreme hills. Everything there is more common than other places. With fortune III you can be up to your ears in no time. Trust me. I only ever mine in extreme hills and I often wind up with around 20 or more per session.
You just have be mindful of silverfish. But I only ever mine in peaceful.

Haste 2 / efficiency 5 = easy diamonds.
then follow what gonzo said as to a location.
