Might just have to leave the Noble Villa just for a break from the monotony. Gather cobble. Chop wood. Turn wood into charcoal. Turn cobble into stone. Turn stone into stone brick, build on keep. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
On the plus side, one tower is ready to be roofed.
So the current situation:
- Spiral staircase in all four towers are complete.
- A new room has been added to the keep's third floor. Workshop/ Forge. All crafting supplies are now officially out of the elements. And in a pinch, I have 15 furnaces in the castle for dealing with cobblestone.
Other than that, everything else is as it was for need to do's, with one omission that was made. Also need to roof the servant quarters. D'Oh!
I'm excited to report that the bugged chickens decided to stick around after all.
Now that I'm confident the chickens won't just randomly despawn, farming is well under way. Remodeled the confinement area a bit.
Also widened the cow confinement a bit, moo.
It took a couple long trips leading sheep from far away places, but I now have a small herd of bleating wool factories. =P Too bad they all have faces only a blind mother could love...
This has definitely been a combat-heavy stage as my levels jumps up and drops down as I face various conquests and defeats fighting intruders for precious gunpowder, string, and arrows. I did manage to scrape together enough gunpowder to construct the 4 required TNT, however.
Between all the fighting, crafting, farming, and livestock care I did manage to do some public works for the city - replaced the old torch sconces with hanging jack-o'-lanterns.
Just a pretty bit of scenery I snapped a shot of while combing the overworld for livestock and resources. May have to explore this area further later and see if there's something I can come up with to build here.
For the time being, however, I should probably stick to finishing the exploration of the cave system I found under my city...
Left to do: construct another hut (have four so far, need one more for this stage) and farm/breed enough wool for the remaining four beds for the barracks and the final hut.
Intruder kill count for this stage so far:
12 Skeletons
11 Spiders
12 Zombies
12 Creepers
Wow, Those are really good I hope my kobolds come out just as well... So far I've pretty much just leveled half a mountain XD No huts or anything yet
I'm actually considering a major remodel of all the huts I've built so far. I just don't like how boring and blocky they are...going to try for something slightly more dynamic. On the plus side, all my digging to widen the area and punching trees for apples have left me with tons of wood and cobble.
Guess if you can manage to somehow get some grass growing to that place down there in future the wool-gathering will improve... Once you left the stoneage though.
I've already been replacing the stone flooring in the main part of the city with dirt and grass is slowly creeping down inside. Going to take a long while to fill the room, let alone sneak down to where the livestock are kept, but it is a possibility for the agenda.

So I apparently cursed myself to *have* to leave with that last update. No, it wasn't a dire, "OH CRAP!"-ness. No. I ran out of red wool while putting the roofs on the towers. Only the front two towers are fully roofed. So it looks like I need to gather quite a bit more. So it was back to the farming village I go. Unfortunately, I think I am also going to need iron, so I'll have to do some mining before I leave town. That's fine. Gives more time for grass to grow on my tower of power. Or whatever I am going to call it. Dirt death spiral of grass? Heh. Sorry.
So for a bit of a teaser of what's coming down... image behind the spoiler:
The front of the keep. The battlements need some trim work done under them. As does the roof of the towers. On your right you can see the servant quarters. Unroofed. I have to figure out how I want to roof their houses. On the left you can see the started wall. You might catch the chandelier over the grand staircase in the second story window if you look closely. Right now all chandeliers are torch-lit, but once I have access to glowstone that will change.
To do Keep/ Castle:
- Finish roofing towers and throne room.
- Finish keep roof. Put trim work underneath to look cooler. (Very dangerous, sizable drop.)
- Battlement trim.
- Roof throne room.
- Castle walls + bastions and gatehouse.
- Stables.
To do Stage 3 Completion:
- Finish castle.
- Build noble houses.
- Finish enough of island to incorporate said noble houses.
- Build stair access to island and remove ladder access. When finished, the stair access will be significantly safer than the ladder access.
- Road to village from base of stair access. Stair access will have a small gate house at the bottom to prevent mobs from getting on.
Again, ignoring cobble and wood requirements as those are no longer a difficulty at this stage.
Personally, I prefer to leave undergrounds as they are... meaning, not really digging it all out and making a usual city but simply carving just an entrance into something and all.
Of course, natural huge halls need proper buildings.
Where I started digging for my city there really wasn't anything but solid rock, dirt, and gravel. Eventually stumbled upon some natural caves while expanding, but for the first part of the challenge the only place to build was where I'd made a hole. I've been considering some options for how I want the huts & city to look and I may actually swap out much of the cobblestone walls for smooth stone to give the illusion that the structures were carved out of existing rock rather than being constructed from quarried stone. At this point, aesthetics are becoming a bigger part of the challenge for me than they were at the beginning (when shelter & survival was more of a concern).
I really like this idea! it will give me a purpose to my building! I am starting with Human and shall post pics as I go. first mini mine that I made and i found a 9 vein of iron ore! guess i am set for stage 2 when i get to it!
Because I mentioned exploring some caves in my last update post, I thought I'd share my find while doing so - diamonds! Left them where they were since I'm not using iron yet.
Grass is starting to spread well throughout the city, finally.
I talked about doing a aesthetic upgrade to the huts in my last post and since that's really the biggest update I have here's the results - all five huts needed to complete Stage 2 have been upgraded and are fully furnished. Here's the new view of the city showing the placement and shapes of the new huts (as well as the progress on the grass growth).
The huts have two basic floorplans. The first floorplan, which I'm calling the Family or Couple's hut has has seating for two and a table on the upper (ground) floor as well as a furnace. Both floorplans are lit by a single jack-o'-lantern set in the floor so it shines on both the upper and lower floors.
Down the ladder, the Family/Couple's hut has a double bed and separate storage chest for the residents.
The other floorplan, the Single's or Bachelor hut has seating for one, a table, furnace, and workbench on the ground floor. The hut I'm using as a base of operations has the same floorplan as a Bachelor hut but has an additional double chest upstairs in lieu of the chair & table.
Downstairs in the Single's/Bachelor hut has a single bed and a double chest for storage.
Yet to do: farm yet more wool for the 5 beds I need to complete the barracks. After that, I'll have everything for Stage 2 completed.
Onto iron! Also as i was mining to get the stack of cobblestone I ran across...
AN ABANDONED MINESHAFT! DUN DUN DUN!
And as an added bonus, a first person narrative of stage one!
Our settlements life began easily enough. Wood and stone were gathered in abundance to make our houses. Naturally my house was the first to be finished. After witnessing a creature I have dubbed a “creeper” explode on a workman and destroy part of the lower floor I have decided to put my bed on a loft area overlooking the common room. This area also seems to have the strange ability of bringing back the dead every night. Skeletons and zombies arise every night, only to be burned to death upon the rising of the sun. The rattling of bones and the moaning of zombies keeps me up at night sometimes just waiting for the dawn. The other dangerous creatures in these lands are spiders larger than a man! They are swift, though no match for myself in single combat! We have found that lighting the area around our small settlement seems to keep most of these creatures away, and in fact encourages the other animals to come closer. So far I have observed sheep, both white and black, pigs in abundance, and a few cows. The abundance of pigs has led to general surplus of food even while our farm was under construction. Now that the farm is complete and more supplies have been accumulated we are attracting more people, and I believe expansion is in order for our settlement. Perhaps we shall even be called a town once these new folk have settled in!
Took a bit longer to complete the stage than strictly necessary, as I made a lot more beds than I really needed to. Oh well, it's good to strive for verisimilitude now and then.
Snapped a shot of the inside of the barracks. Since defense is a high priority for this pack of kobolds, their barracks sleeps five rather than the normal four.
Requisite food storage pic.
And as a bonus, while exploring some nearby mountains (the same mountain range where I found that valley I snapped a pic of earlier) when I came across this. Yikes!
Final Intruder Kill Count for Stage 2:
15 Skeletons
23 Spiders
15 Zombies
16 Creepers
Okay, I gave up on Creepmining... they just refuse to spawn and if one spawns and explodes ... I get 2 Cobblestone at best (every few MC-Days....)
Loaded a shot of the required items into my gallery and skip the last 8 Cobble and fighting other creatures is just insane (thanks to the Advanced Mobs-Mod) and move to Stage 3.
Yeah, I might lower the requirement, or just delete it entirely. I tried the Hobbit challenge too, I gave up because I could never get any cobble.

So I decided to take a break from the Human Challenge since... well... I've hit a point where things are monotonous. Shear sheep. Wait for sheep to regrow. Shear. Or. Mine cobble, grow trees. So a break is needed.
Using the seed: Karak Azgal (I think... Bonus points for catching the reference.) I started the Dwarf challenge. Found a nice little hutch near the spawn point to retreat to. Once I punched a single tree, I retreated to the hutch and cleared it out to make a nice starting point to wait unti nightfall to gather the rest of my supplies. Two nights out gathering in a blind panic. I have mined down and created a nice little place for myself. Soon it'll be expanded to allow for future growth. Just have to be careful not to let any Orcs or Goblins in.
Once I finish Stage 1, I'll probably return to the Human challenge.
Lastly, I might be attempting a challenge on my friend's server. I already started something that broke rules for all challenges. So I might up and abandon that position and then head east for two days and two nights. Then on the morning of the third day, I will start a new challenge.
For animals... it clearly shows I have enough of one kind... and no luck with the chickens.
For the next Stage I will get some pigs... and somehow have to locate some cows, none seen up until now but as I have to gather more clay... I guess I might stumble over some.
Without cows it will be hard to gather leather... maybe zombies and prepare their rotten flesh (must be one of my mods, allowing to cook the flesh, but they seldom drop for me...)
Renderings coming as soon as I have all roads and training-area finished as well
Yeah, cows were really a stumbling block for me during stages one & two of the kobold challenge. There simply weren't enough of them spawned on the overworld within a reasonable distance to my city. Eventually had to bend/break the rules of the challenge and start my wheat/animal farms earlier than I was supposed to. 10 leather for caps doesn't seem like much until you find yourself with only 4 cows within a full day's walk of your camp.
Finally being able to use iron, now that I'm in stage 3 is...an indescribable leap forward. There's just so many things that are difficult or impossible without being able to use iron and some aren't obvious at first thought - compasses, maps, shears, flint & tinder, armor, etc. It's kind of silly, to me, that it's so much more difficult to get a full set of leather armor than it is a full set of iron armor. lol
Really brief Kobold City update!
Shearing is so much more efficient for getting wool than killing the sheep. Took me ages to get enough wool for the Stage 1 and 2 beds and with the advent of iron I now have a surplus for Stage 3!
I even made a painting! Simply love the design I have for it, too. Fluff for the challenge says that kobolds love damp undergrounds areas and dense forests - now my kobolds can stay in their damp tunnel and still enjoy the beauty of the forest above!
Awwwwww yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! GAME CHANGER! No more wandering around blindly and not being able to find my way home.
Intruder kill count for Stage 3:
1 Skeleton LOL
Additional: Any ideas for how to go about the bonfire I'm supposed to construct? Unless it counts to have a brief fire, I'm not sure what to do to achieve the goal since I won't be able to acquire netherack until I can use diamonds to mine obsidian in Stage 5.

Well, the Kobold challenge was really meant to be above ground, but they would have like tunnel systems to secret operations and such, making the bonfire easy to make. I'm not really sure how you would go with everything underground.

I'm not sure how being above ground would have made things any different. Having enough wood isn't the problem, I've got tons of the stuff because I run around planting trees like it's Arbor Day year round...it's that nothing besides netherack produces a permanent flame. Unless I was meant to just stand around dumping wood blocks into the fire all day to keep it going.
So, no one interested in doing all the channels in MP?
2/5 spaces filled.
I'd love to get in on some multiplayer, but the majority of my playtime is where I won't have an internet connection so I couldn't get on the server.
And I suppose as long as I'm here I may as well do a Kobold City Update!
Here is my attempt at the bonfire. 10 blocks of wood burn erratically for about 3 minutes and then go out.
Wheat farm is coming along nicely...this part of the stage is complete.
Sheep are also doing well and as a bonus I've started dying a few of them - white & brown are spawned that way and I've dyed others black, red, and green. Hoping to find some lapis at some point for blue, purple, cyan, and magenta. I have yellow dye, too, but haven't used it yet.
So many chickens!
My level has shot up quite a bit from last time because I decided to run around and complete my map of the surrounding area. Here's some pics of things I found on my travels.
A giant cavern with a waterfall I'll have to go back and explore sometime.
These look like overgrown creeper craters, but I hadn't been to this part of the map before...if a creeper explodes in the night and nobody is around to get blasted, does it still make a crater?
Ooo, is that jungle I spy over there?
Back home safe & sound after three days on the march fending off monsters, this is what the map looks like so far. I'm on an island just barely disconnected from other parts of land. Possibly an archipelago? Will have to explore more later.
Phat lewts from my jourmey: 4 iron ingots (smelted at home), 30 rose red from flowers, a dandelion, 6 seeds, 3 wooden planks (all that's left of the couple trees I used for materials while on the road), 12 leather, 28 uncooked steak, & 7 cooked steak (from killing every cow I came across), 7 gunpowder, 10 red mushrooms, 3 apples, 1 brown mushroom, 8 bones, and 14 coal. That'll do!
Stage 3 intruder kill count:
Honestly, during my travels I sort of lost count, so this is the approximates. lol
5 Skeletons
9 Spiders
8 Creepers
4 Zombies
