Sandstone with Lapis Lazuli blocks work really nice in a checkerboard pattern. You can also use Furnaces paired with Stone blocks or Wood in an X - Shaped pattern.
You guys should consider attaching pics to this thread of these combinations. I am terrible at mixing blocks and building something pretty and complex, so it would be nice to see some of your creations based on what you think is a nice mix of blocks.
I usually use wooden planks.A basic block type for me but when I want it fancy,I use usually costly and rarer materials such as Iron blocks,Gold and so on and so forth.
Here's a list
.Sandstone and Red Brick
.Snow blocks and Ice
.Emerald and Diamond blocks

This depends on the texture pack you currently hold. Also this thread is a little misleading since building things on minecraft is much like how we artists draw, paint, or do anything when comes to color. Look at references.... The style of building, the age of which you want to design it, and the surrounding terrain all influence the texture/color of your design. If you are looking for more information about what color goes with what or how to build in paticular I'm more than welcome to answer, all you need to do is message me. However if your thinking of outside sources I suggest looking at builds from FyreUK, BlockFortress, Mithrintia, Gazamo, Creolucis, and many many more teams you'll find on youtube.
Blocks from the same color spectrum and complimentary colors look good.
