I have recently dug out several rooms into the side of a ravine next to my base and now I'm trying to design them. However I'm not very good at finding block types that complement each other. Can you give me suggestions for what go together well? Also could you suggest various patterns? So far I have a sandstone/log/plank room as well as a Nether-themed room. If you'd like to know what I'm doing, I've been writing about it here. Thanks!
Hello, and again, welcome to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. We are currently experiencing technical difficulties due to circumstances of potentially apocalyptic significance, beyond our control.
Stone slabs, Stone and wooden planks go PERFECT together. trust me on that. Try to make the room like this:
Roof and floor and roof of stone or stone bricks, then the wall of wood. then you replace the top row of the wall ( I have rooms thats 3 blocks tall, and the uppermost row is not planks ) To Stone slabs. Looks incredibly good.
Some other designs : Sandstone + Nether Brick
Cobble stone + Netherack (In texture packs, only some of them)
Double half stone slab with anything
Stone brick and sandstone
Wool on floor and wood as wall
Stone cobble stone-brick
I like lapis and gold blocks-- It has an ancient Egyptian feel. But it is kind of expensive. Glowstone goes pretty well with cobblestone or obsidian.
I don't know anything cheap that looks good though. It is either planks and cobblestone or a room fit for a king: no half way for me.
Sanstone with dirt blocks with grass on top for the floor is my favorite if you can get some emerald blocks I think it looks awesome with obsidian. If your looking to go cheapy on the rooms I would suggest stone brick and the white wooden planks I always liked them with some redstone lamps for lighting
This question doesn't really work....
Because textures vary and some architextural styles just dont work with a general question, would you build a log pyramid on a sci-fi texture pack? I think not....
My 2cents.

I like to us sandstone, wood logs, and stone bricks in my builds. It has a very solid look to it, and it usually is fairly blast-resistant. It's also nice to have circular rooms.
Cobble and pine logs.
Obsidian and lapis blocks.
Stone slabs and ANYTHING! :biggrin.gif:

Give it a try!
...what? Did you expect something funny?

Also add a few sandstone and dark logs
For lighting, do the ceiling out of dark leaves with lapis blocks ontop, and a ring of glowstone around the leaves.
I will have to try this. I've got a couple stacks of brown wool and no ideas for how to use it.

Nether bricks and stone bricks seem to go well together.
Don't look at the x.
