So I want your opinions... In balance of availability, looks, and durability, what's the best block for constructing a home in minecraft?
Stone: The most common block in the game, good creeper resistance, decent griefer resistance, looks either good or bad dependent on ones taste. An overall good block to have, and you normally have ALOT of it. Especially good for castles.
Planks: can be created in mass qaunities in a shorter time than any other block ( unless you do alot of mining), and can be regrown. Looks good enough to make an upper class home, the only flaw is it's not durable as stone, and can be burnt down. Arguably the best block for building quick shelter go the first night.
Brick: Looks modern, fancy, and genuine, is much harder than stone, and can be collected in either mass amounts, or very rarely. If you spawn near a big vat of clay, there's almost no reason not to build a home out of this. One flaw is it must be smelted four times to make one block, thus taking alot of time/ fuel.
Obsidian: The hardest conceivable material besides bedrock. Looks badass, is 100% creeper proof, and no grief will ever bother with trying to break it. What the catch? You need an entire lava source block and 15 seconds WITH a diamond pick to get ONE. Good for portals/ indestructible bases.
Sand/ sandstone: looks cool If you know what your doing, and can be gather in mass quantities. Terrible against creepers/grievers
Exotic blocks(netherrack, mossy stone, ore blocks) general for looks only.
Much as I love brick, I can't be bothered to gather and smelt all that clay. Thankfully, my preferred texture pack has a good cobble texture, so it looks more like white mortar bricks then the fugly vanilla texture.

Totally badass, looks cool, totally badass, creeper proof, totally badass, griefer proof, and also totally badass.
I mean, yeah, it takes hours to mine the obsidian for a good sized house, but trust me... It's TOTALLY worth it.... and totally badass.
When I finish the gold roof on my house, I'll post pictures to show you what I mean.
