Inspired by Biosphere & onepiece, i decided to build a glass dome underwater. I have completed the glass dome(partially above water but mainly underwater).
However, the hard thing now is to drain the water inside the glass dome =/.
Currently i have 2 way of draining them.
1) use a bucket(stupid)
2) use sand to fill it (only slightly better) & i need to remove the sand later.
Just wondering if anyone have attempt such project or have idea on how to drain the water.
My sphere currently have a diameter of 27 =/ and i am planning a bigger sphere next time and i really need a better way of draining the water.
I need it to drain the inside water and not the outside water so draining before building it is not possible.
If you have tonnes of spare wood, you could fill the entire dome and then use flint to burn all the wood- this should leave the dome empty. Worked for me- but this was more than 6 months ago, so idk!
Good luck, regardless!
assuming vanilla minecraft with no worldedit or anything else if you drop gravel or sand onto a torch it goes into a block drop.fill in your dome with sand or gravel with a layer of stone or dirt underthat then one or two blocks of open space below that.fill the open space with torches, then break the stone or dirt or whatever above the torches and you end up with a clear space very quickly.
nice idea, thank would work. At least now i only need to think of how to fill the space. I am thinking if i could build a piston machine at a higher level, and let it automatically put the sand and i just need to stand in one place to place the sand. May not be helpful for the current sphere but may be useful for the next sphere that i am building. But your idea to remove the sand/gravel is brillant !

Thought of this too. But was thinking of using wool instead but i guess planks is easier to get xD.
I'll probably use the torches idea since it really reduces a lot of work(and wastage of durability).
Instead of wood you can use leaves, they are quicker to collect with sheers and they still burns. You can even use the leaves to fill inn the glass dome and then use sheers again to collect the leaves again, this way you can use the same leaf blocks over and over again to clear out one section at a time.
If you have dirt or sand as your floor you can use reeds to make airpockets. The good thing about reeds is that you collect them really really fast by punching the bottom block once, you can also move unhindered through the reeds something that is useful when you want to get into the right position to place or remove other blocks.
Personally if I where to do this legit I would do it like this:
Dive down and create an instant air pocket by placing a door or two reeds if there is dirt or sand on the bottom (bring a few jack-o-lanterns as well to get some light during the few steps when you are still surrounded by water.
Divide the dome into small sections using wood planks, add a opening to the wall with reeds acting as a door. A normal door works as well, but reeds are simpler as you can just walk through them. Fill each section with sand (sand takes longer but since it falls you are much less likely to accidentally knock a hole in your glass roof while removing the top blocks of something that is not affected by gravity).
Once you are done clearing out all the sections you can just simply burn away the dividing wooden walls to get one big room.
Leaves are faster to mine than sand given that you have a dense forrest and shears. Then you can just burn the leaves instead of mining them again. This is the method I've used and seems slightly faster/resource efficient than using sand.

Everytime i log on, i expect to see my warn status go up.
Woah wait now how do you do that? This is a question, not criticism by the way.

These are the only "legit" ways to do it.
Otherwise, get MCEdit.
