Well, there is one thing that should probably be clarified about this. Everyone knows that all caverns below layer 12 are filled with lava, but out of curiosity, I checked the wiki for the official measurements on where lava can appear, and according to the Altitude page, the point at which lava is common below is layer 16, not 12!
So everyone remember, just because lava is always in caves below layer 12, the tops of the pools can still go ABOVE layer 12.
...unless someone has been trolling the wiki site and no one noticed...
all caverns below layer 12 are not filled with lava, unless you can explain the "aquifer" screenshots above. ive found multiple occurrences of deep water pools(im talking layer 5-10) since posting those screenshots as well. just because its in the wiki doesnt mean its 100% fact. im also sure lava is common below layer 16, does the wiki differentiate between still lava pools(98% of the time at layer 11), flowing lava, and 1 block springs??

the method behind my mining technique is fairly standard. first and foremost... YOU NEED A BUCKET OF WATER! this will allow you to turn your instant death into an obsidian "highway", like the picture below. just drop the water in the block next to the lava. once it spreads out, pick the water source block back up and repeat the process. just dig down to layer 12 and start branch mining until you hit lava(ive never seen lava spawn AT layer 12, it will always be at 11. its probably possible but ive never seen it). it will give you something like this.
Okay I'm a newb to MC so I have to ask a dumb question about this..
When you say put the block of water next to the lava is it like this? (You've removed the screen shots so not sure)
[]
So the water "flows" on the lava? Doesn't the water go away afterwards so you can't grab it anymore? Again I apologise for the stupid question but I don't have much experience with Water/lava interactions besides running away. :smile.gif:

Not quite sure I understand, but the only way that a water source block will cease to exist is if another block is placed in the exact same spot (or if lava flows onto the source block from above). As long as the water source block is above the lava, then water will flow from the source block onto the lava (or towards the closest hole in the floor), cooling it and turning it into obsidian, at which point you can pick up the water source block again.

I did this for an hour and a half and found plenty of lava lakes but found no diamonds in them. The only diamonds I found were 3 in a cave I wandered to off to the side.
Weird enough, every diamond i ever find is always in a group of three under a pool of lava...a while back i went exploring with invincibility and found that was the only way to get diamond on my world!
Wait, what is this? As far as I know, this thread is about how there are more diamonds near lava.
THERE ISN'T!
Actually, this thread is about the advantages of mining with layer 12 at eye-level. Since all caverns are guaranteed to have something other than air inside them at or below layer 10 (usually lava), it is impossible to spelunk at the extreme bottom of the map. However, by creating mine tunnels in layers 11 and 12, it is possible to discover explorable caves inside of the diamond layer. All the in-depth discussions on mining techniques tend to place heavy emphasis on exposing more surfaces for each block broken, and caverns provide a large area of exposure without needing to break any stone.
Of course, if a cavern's level dips below the 10th layer, it is going to probably be filled with lava, so even though diamonds don't actually have a higher occurrence rate near lava, the large amounts of lava and the number of exposed surfaces are going to make it appear like lava and diamonds are found together.

...Seems kind of obvious. That caves don't have stone in them.
I ended up finding 19 diamonds this way. I found a cave, and found 15 diamonds within 20 blocks of each other. I then processed to dig around a lava pool 15~30 blocks away, just to find four more.
Made my day :biggrin.gif:
This may be the most helpful forum post I have ever found on the interwebz. I went to that layer and found myself swimming in coal, iron, redstone, lapis, and even 6 diamond nodes - within 15 minutes.
I'm happy to report that on my new world I found diamond before I got an iron pick!
And then I found my first lava lake right underneath the diamond block.

lol, this happened to me when i was playing "hardcore" rules for a while! it made me very sad since diamond is so hard to come by when youre deleting worlds =(
this is why the bucket of water is SO IMPORTANT. if you put a source block of water on top of or next to the block of diamond you WILL NEVER LOSE THE DIAMOND. the water will put the lava out 100% of the time, maintaining any block youve mined. you can even put down the water, mine a few blocks with it putting the lava out as you go, then pick up your water and grab the blocks you mined(works amazing for mining troublesome obsidian, just watch out for the S/W rule!).

Please try to make at least a little bit of sense when you post. Thanks.
Correlation doesn't imply causation means that just because you find things together or at the same time doesn't mean they're linked or caused by the same thing. "I found a dollar when I stubbed my toe at the carwash change machine. If I stub my toe again, I'll find another dollar!"
Observation bias is the bias of only looking in the area you expect positive results to see if you get positive results. "If I stub my toe, I'll find more dollars. I shall test this repeatedly once a week or so at the carwash change machine. There's no point in doing it in the woods as well."
Confirmation bias is the bias of seeing only what you expect to see, and ignoring any contradictory evidence. "I didn't find a dollar when I stubbed my toe this week. But I did last week, and two weeks before that. And 5 months ago. And last year. That's 4 stubbings = 4 dollars, SEE?!"
Fact is, caves just have the advantage of 'pre-mining' a bunch of squares. If you go down to any of the diamond levels, get any of the modding programs and make a 5x5 tunnel in any random direction, you'll find a very similar number of diamonds in the walls. You could do it by hand too, it's just slower.
Once again, branch mining is superior. You say that looking in caves will give you a better chance of finding diamond, which is generally true in the fact that more faces are exposed, but you still neglect to realize that the same goes for branch mining. you will miss a huge amount of rocks if you just look in caves, and by branch mining all of the time, you can find these caves AND expose the rock around you at a great efficiency.
Also,
you WILL have to do some random branch mining eventually), you simply follow the lava and it will LEAD you to diamonds in one way or another.
Theres where you say that diamond is always near lava.
Superior? superior in terms of ores per chunk. yes. But not superior in ores per time spend.
The percentage of chance to find diamond never changes. Period.
Whether you multi level branchmine or stick to one layer. The only thing a branch mine does is find every ore available in an area. That's it. That doesn't make it superior in finding diamonds vs. time spend.
So while you won't find all the ores by sticking to 12, you will find more open space and caves on the level in relative safety. So you spend less time breaking rocks = faster diamonds.
Because that's what matters in terms of time, the amount of rock you have to break vs. amount of rock exposed. And then this method of sticking to level 12 is quicker in finding ores because you come across natural caves more often.
