How long does it generally take for fire to spread, if it is indeed going to end up spreading? I watched my fireplace for about 3 or 4 min, and no fire elsewhere, so seems to be safe.
Here is the design
Closer shot. Its completely encased, diagonal blocks as well. Seems to be working.
And just a cameo of my entire living room, just for the hell of it
Looks awesome! A fireplace needs to have a flammable block next to it or 1 block away from it for it to catch on fire and/or 3 blocks above it to catch on fire.
Just a quick question... What texture pack are you using because it looks amazing and I would love to use it =)
I'm a bit concerned that the wood to each side of the fireplace could be vulnerable to catching fire. The ones on the wall between the painting and the cobblestone fireplace surround. Being one block diagonal forward from the row the fire is in may be enough to put them out of risk but I'm not sure. Keep a regular backup for a couple days.

Is safe, I replicated it and its in no danger of fire! If there is a block between a flammable block and fire it wont spread... since half blocks count as blocks the fire wont spread unless a flammable block is placed 3 blocks above the fire.

Not true at all. And halfblocks have no bearing on what I stated because those are obviously log block walls around the fireplace. The key is limiting air blocks within the fire zone. For example I challenge you to make this and see if your statement still holds true:

Basically completely surround the fire with stone and put wood two blocks away. The air blocks by the wood and the fact that the wood is in the fire zone means that wood WILL catch fire.
The Netherrack that son fire is actually set down at floor level, surrounded by stone. One to the right and left of the top of the Netherrack where the fire actually is, there is wood past it, but I played quite a bit last night, and it never caught fire, so it appears to be safe

Oh really?
The only block that will catch on fire if its in the fire zone AND there are stone blocks surrounding the fire is leaves... leaves catch on fire when near a flame no matter what!
your good. if it burns, then that will buff out just fine.
lol! but seriously, it should be fine. that is similar to my fireplace design in my wooden house. and it has not caught fire for many hours of gameplay.
looks like a really good design to me... i always make mine pretty basic... i build a chimney flush with the wall and set my fireplace inside it... i make the opening two blocks high and place stone slabs across the front to keep me from walking into it and stop the fire from spreading to my wood floors

like i said basic and not exactly creative but it works
You can also put glass, it's even better because it doesn't block the view of the fire.
I learned how to make safe fireplaces myself...Because of some mistakes... (*cough* lava incinerator*cough*)
I want to ask something too, what is the safest design of a lava incinerator or lava lamp?

Also, I like your couch. It looks awesome with the wooden logs.
Second off, it should be fine.
Looks cool though.

And the texture pack is a Painterly Pack texture pack

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Could you also do this?
I'm not very knowledgeable about things catching on fire.
